DL can be retroactive to 3 days now, so they won't be without him for a week from today, if he does return.

Also this sucks ass. Losing his bat and glove is really big, there's no replacing either of that.

Didn't see the report on this. We have been getting BS for the last 5 days or so. If he is hurt why no just admit it.

Watching Altuve who is unquestionably Astro's best hitter, batting 3rd, I'm inclined to wonder whether with Beni proving to be a more than serviceable lead off hitter, will Cora consider inserting Betts in 3 hole when he returns from disable list.

I mentioned where Altuve hits in the batting order on another thread. It seems clear to me that there are plenty of ml people who still like to have their run producers hitting 3-4-5. I have heard all of the arguments for not having your best hitter batting third for a couple of years now. There are many people that think that your very best hitter should be your leadoff guy but what I have not heard is what defines your very best hitter. With respect to Mookie, I think that if he is comfortable in the leadoff spot and wants to be there, I think that you go with that. It is possible that he could produce more runs hitting somewhere else but he is good enough to have some input I think with respect to where he bats in the lineup.

My thoughts while Betts is on the DL is that it would be nice to have a right handed bat like Hanley's.

The Sox have been reduced to calling up Sam Travis.

Hanley blew it with his horrible May, Kimmi.

With his OPS down to about .700 and a 22 million option lurking they had to cut him loose, I think. That option was bad for us and bad for him too.

Here's another thought, who bats 5th? Perfect time for Holt accession into the 2-hole. This extend the lineup. Last night Devers hit 5th and JD got walked. Put Xander back in the 5-hole.

I agree. Holt/Pedey in the 2nd hole temporarily sounds pretty good to me.

JD should be batting 3rd at the lowest. I would wonder what a lineup with Betts leadoff and JDM 2nd would look like.

We got Benni for that. JD should hit 3rd, follow by Moreland. But you can't let Devers follow JD like last night.

Why Travis?? He's hitting .220 with 4 homers. We've got a real lineup problem without Betts. Nunez may start hitting, but right now there's not enough good hitters to fill the lineup. And yes why pitch to Martinez at all? Our lineup looks like a National League one... lots of easy outs, and no DH except we do have a DH. We need Ortiz back.

JD should certainly hit either third or fourth. You want to assure you get him up in the first inning, he hits third.

The trouble with relying on Moreland to "protect" JD is that no way in hell is he a proven clean-up hitter. His record shows that he's at best a good solid 6th-7th hitter. We can try this and maybe Mitch will come through, but there's no real reason to expect that he will. And if you were to look at all the comments on this board about him, the faith you have in him must be brand new.

Travis is hitting .220/.293/.364 in AAA. Ramirez was hitting better in MLB in all 3 splits and was released.

That was her point - that without Hnaley we don't have enough hitters and the only guy the Sox can call up is Travis.

And, while she didn't say it outright, Travis isn't very good...

I think if someone else said this you might be the first to point out the following:

In the 10 games since Hanley was DFA'd, we've scored 56 runs, 5.6 per game.

More impressively, in the 8 games without both Mookie and Hanley, we've scored 42 runs, 5.25 per game.

So we still have some other hitters...

Moreland was good last year until he broke his toe. He's been outstanding so far this year. I'm glad they kept him around. A clean-up hitter in 2018 isn't the same as a clean-up hitter in 1988.

I'm a great Moreland supporter, but this board has often not been, so I find it a bit ironic that he's pointed to as the suitable cleanup hitter now. I want him to stick in the 4th-5th role all season, but his past performances say 6-7th guy. (I hope that toe problem was the main reason for his being a average hitter last year)

Amazing all the notions about how to fix the lineup with Mookie out. He's one guy, not even a third of the order. The Sox are 8-4 when he misses a game or goes out early.

How is that possible? Well, for one thing, the Sox dumped Hanley--addition by subtraction. That definitely helped. For another, other guys are rising to the occasion which is what moonslav predicted awhile ago before Mookie got hurt.

Like everyone else, I want Mookie back ASAP, but meanwhile I kind of like what I am seeing.

I'm not even sure what a "suitable cleanup hitter" means.

He can hit for power and puts the ball in play. Sounds ok to me.

It means that he looks good in a suit.
