Not at all. I am just applying the standards of the statheads to the statheads whose behavior has been quite infantile in this instance. A poster points out out that an assertion is mere opinion and speculation. That seems fair enough to me. He is met with derision by 3 or 4 posters who tell him that he would discard the stats. Pretty childish. Don't ya think?

No I think it's an accurate (and mostly lighthearted) description of his posting style. I think it's far more childish to keep harking on about stats/graphs/etc in every thread. I've lost count of the amount of game threads I've seen people (and spud specialises in it) posting snipes at 'stat heads'. Even when the conversation is nowhere near the discussion of stats. That's childish to me , but hey, whatever gets people off.

It wasn't lighthearted. It was childish, and Spud was completely correct in characterizing Kimmi's assertion as baseless speculation.

I look forward to you pointing out to everyone who posts things without a hard stat to back it up that their post is useless and baseless speculation.

I will for the statheads who think their opinions have a higher level of reliability.

Of course you will.

People who believe in their opinions because of experience and their eye are no less confident in their assertions, but of course, you'll just apply the standard to the stat heads.

Quelle surprise.

The statheads already apply the standard to everyone else, so holding myself to the standard would be wholly unnecessary and redundant. You have a nice night.

If an opinion reminds me of statistics that may be relevant to that opinion, I share those stats.

The poster (and reader) can choose to incorporate those stats into their thinking ... or ignore the stats.

I don't care to tell anyone how to think.

That is the spirit of a good discussion and healthy exchange of ideas.

It seems that the only stats that you consider valid are the ones that agree with your opinion.

Interesting observation coming from someone who never acknowledges that she may not be right and that other viewpoints may be valid.

I used statistics in science, industry, and business every day of my adult life. They were essential components for success in important endeavors.

Baseball is a game. It is entertainment.

It is not essential to my existence. Neither are stats when stating my opinions about a game that I watch for amusement.

Amen brother MVP.

Stats are your raison d'etre. Without them you have no opinion and no way to defend your opinion.

I, on the other hand, do not give a sweet f*** about advanced stats that are not accurate or whose validity can be questioned.

I do understand how they can become a way of life for some and that's cool for them.

You are inflexible and live to challenge anyone who does not swallow your statements as fact simply because you read an article written by some obscure dweeb.

So unless you have a stat to back up your opinion, it is worthless?

A fantastically ironic post.

Yeah really cute stuff there Hick.

That is exactly what Kimmi does.

A good night sleep might improve your cognition.

Not likely as his vision is obscured by having his head so far up Kimmi's butt.

And the authors of those obscure articles usually acknowledge (if honest) that there studies are not dispositive proof.

With no games being played and nothing new to talk about, things are getting off on tangents.

How about our Sox?

38 games over .500 at the all star break. No Sox team has done that, EVAH!

Can the nay-sayers finally take a break?

No naysaying about our Sox.

On another note....

My family and I are in Quebec City and will be off to Montreal soon, then back to Maine for a few days more.

Beautiful city. Reminds me of Paris.

Have a great break everyone!

I think you haven’t been following very closely. The other players are actively seeking and getting JD’s mentorship and they are mimicking and copy his approach to preparation. This has been discussed in numerous outlets.

I have no doubt Martinez is positive in the clubhouse. I have doubts his powers are magical - and that this is much different than talented young players just acquiring more reps and being healthy. It's not like anyone started speaking in tongues and healing blindness.

All speculation.

No stats to prove this hypothesis.

It is super interesting to be in the "players are human" camp - although being pro analytics certainly does not contradict that. (Cora is very much both!)

Analytics are great to answer "what happened", "why it happened" (or more accurately the reverse - eliminating reasons why it happened), and a certain degree of "how it happened"). Where analytics fail - where the scouts, coaches, manager and players take the mantle - is how to fix it in the real world.

How does the manager implement that? Well, clearly some of that is developing a plan with the org and with his coaches - and then there is the squishy stuff. Of course that stuff matters.

And of course it is no guarantee what Cora is doing is built to last. It might be. (I think he was labeled to be really really good at this for a few years now) But Farrell established a different work environment which at times was also effective. There was a resourcefulness and intensity in the last two years - especially last year where the team fought through a lot of adversity to have a good season. (some of that adversity of their own making)

But if Martinez has the traits of a really good hitting coach, helping other hitters with their mechanics, their approach, pointing out things about opposing pitchers, that's not magical/speaking in tongues stuff.

I was bored enough to watch the MLB Network doc about the 1988 Dodgers. The one thing that was interesting was the crucial detail about the famous Gibson HR off Eck. Gibson had studied the scouting report on Eck, and what really stuck in his head was the note that on 3-2 counts to lefthanded hitters Eck loves to throw the backdoor slider. Gibson was looking for it and he got it.

JD has most definitely helped in that sense. That said, do you think that the other players would not have improved this year without JD's help?

Again, loving the irony. But I must point out this post is pure worthless and baseless speculation.

i think this is why post #3109 was written.

Question for those saying JDM is helping everyone with hitting...i do not live in the Boston area so do not hear the sports radio and do not get NESN outside of the 3 hours of the game feed. who is stating that JDM is going out of his way to help our other hitters perform better? i dont doubt this, just wondering who and where it is coming from....

I don't live in the Boston area either. What I hear is coming from the game feeds.
