when it comes to JBj i disagree with this 100%. i couldn't care less if he ever gets another hit as long as he is playing CF....

Is this an opportune time to point out that JBJ is a superior defender to any and all Yankee outfielders?:)

Moon I don't see how this makes much sense. Are you saying play the big money player even when the lesser money players is more productive?

1) I think HRam is better than Moreland.

2) If I think Moreland is $3M better than HRam, I don't sign him for $6.5M to replace HRam.

Does that explain it better?

Obviously you never saw Gary Gieger picking them for us out there in center during the early 60's.

No. I became a Sox fan in 1972.

Fred Lynn was the best defender I saw, until he crashed into the wall. Darren Lewis was right up there. Rick Miller was very good.

JBJ is the best Sox CF'er on defense I have seen.

No it does not explain it to me better. I was talking about Travis and Hanley.

Now I am confused. This is happening with greater regularity as I age.

I agree.

But I must give Jose Tartabul his props!

Last year Jackie Bradley Jr. posted a UZR/150 of 4.9 over 1,204.12 innings in center field while Yankee outfielder Aaron Hicks posted a UZR/150 of 13.3 over 440.2 innings in center field:

Other metrics give Bradley the edge over Hicks:

f*** UZR and UZR 150.

I saw the Yankees play about two dozen times in 2017.

None of their OF is close to JBJ in defensive ability.

Are you talking about releasing him? I'd be shocked if that happened, but who knows. I think there's enough upside left there to give him a chance, but he needs to earn it...if he can't outproduce Moreland and/or whatever other DH candidates we have around (Brentz/Swihart/Travis/etc), then he should see his playing time cut back accordingly. Not saying it wouldn't be a difficult and uncomfortable situation for Cora to navigate, but I think it can be done.

If Speier is talking about it, the Sox must be considering it at some level.

While I firmly believe JBJ has been the best defensive CF'er since I started watching the Sox in the early 70's. I have to say, I have no way of knowing where he should rank in MLB.

30 CF'ers with 1500+ innings from 2015-2017:

According to DRS, JBJ ranks 8th at +24.

According to UZR/150 ranks 11th at +4.9, which is a good number but not great.

Can anybody who has seen any of the below players for more than 200 games tell be JBJ is definitively better than any one of the 10 guys with a better UZR/150 since 2015?

25.1 Kiermaier

16.9 K Pillar

15.2 Hamilton

13.5 J Lagares

10.5 M Taylor

9.5 L Cain

8.1 L Martin

7.8 E Inciarte

7.1 O Herrera

6.9 B Buxton

5.0 AJ Pollock

4.9 JBJ

I know I can't.

Keirmaier and Pillar are really good and we have had numerous opportunities to watch them the past few years. Hicks seems pretty good too.

I remember Hicks playing very well.

10th ranked defensive CF. If Zimmer played more games, JBJ would fall to 11th.

You put entirely too much faith in sabermetrics. :)

I got it and the point makes sense. I don't think that signing Martinez to a reasonably lengthed contract is going to be any kind of an issue. I will say that I am not as enamored with the members of this current team as some here are. There are very few on this current roster that I care enough about to offer them gobs of $ to reup. A couple, yes, but not many. I also truly believe that someday JH is going to sell this team and when he does, the profit he makes will make any budget that we have now or have going forward look paltry.

I don't think signing Martinez to a reasonably lengthed contract is going to be an issue either. I think we may differ on what we consider to be 'reasonably lengthed'.

(And apparently 'lengthed' is not a word.) LOL

Sounds like a weasel word to me.

You do frustrate me from time to time but you are alright. I am ok with being one who believes that lengthed is a word. I am having a tougher time buying into the greater usage of the word pleaded as opposed to pled these days anyway. lol

I'm pretty sure that yes we would disagree as to what a reasonable amount of time to sign JD Martinez might be but I bet that it would be closer than you think.

FTR, I was not poking fun at you for the use of the word 'lengthed'. I thought it sounded perfectly reasonable, and even used it myself. It was only when I saw the red underscore as I was typing did I realize that it was not a word. It should be though.

FTR - It is ok to poke fun of me! It wasn't all that long ago that my mother in law educated me with respect to the mythical irregardless word. An English minor really should have known better I guess.

your f***ing high as a kite if you think Price is going to opt out of that contract. he literally chuckles to himself every friday when he gets his paycheck....

I disagree... LH Starters with any talent do not grow on tree's. If he doesn't like it here and by all accounts he does not, your still cashing in 90 after 3 yrs and off to the next buyer...

He is as good as gone after 18..

Price's decision will also be based on input from his agent as to whether or not he thinks he can get David a better deal, which might mean more years in place of more money...

A 200 inning season with his typical performance might...

I'm praying for that, but I'm not sure it will work. There are so many other more important things worthy of serious prayer.

He didn’t get an elbow transplant. He still has a time bomb in his elbow. A 200 inning year will only get him closer to the inevitable.

I could not agree more. At some point that elbow is going to blow out. That is why we need more pitching!

It is more likely that the Red Sox will be paying him for post-op rehab than him opting out of this lucrative contract.

Don’t the Sox have insurance on guys like price? Hopefully the insurance company is picking up the tab on price’s shredded elbow!
