And why would they move Chavis to 2b for a part time position, when they are trying to transition him to 1b? If he's doing well at 1b, it is probably a better long term fit for him in this organization.

Chavis is a midget.

I like tall guys who can reach balls that are not thrown perfectly. I don't understand having a short player at 1st.

Whatever.

I'd rather a short guy that can field well over a lanky guy that has a negative DWAR. Also, I think Chavis is suited for a platoon bat role. I don't think he'd be starting at 1b for 150 games per season.

Thats why I wonder why they don't look at him as a possible 2nd baseman.

They moved him off of SS because of his footwork. They decided 3b would be a better fit for him than 2b. He wasn't very good at 3b, so I doubt he'd be good at 2b.

I don't see why Chavis is such a stud.

He is a .310-.320 OBP guy that strikes out as much as he gets a hit. He is a .250 hitter. He has had one "nice year" ( less than a season, actually ) at Salem.

Other than that I don't see what the attraction is.

He is young so he could improve but right now I don't see him being anywhere near what the Sox need on their roster.

You guys make fun of Brentz yet you see so much to like about this kid.

That makes a bunch of sense.

He hit lefties !.073) as well as righties (1.009) in single A. He only had 45 ABs vs LHPs at AA (.602). He hit .846 vs RHPs in AA.

Being 5-10 is not ideal for 1B, but it's not unheard of either.

This is a post I wish that I had made. Chavis just seems like the flavor of the day to me. Is the infatuation with him, because he is young or what ? I don't get it. Brentz deserves a shot and honestly who knows about Barfield. I don't care at all about the age of these two guys. All the suggestions about what we should do with Chavis before we even know if he really is any good are amazing.

It's because his power output (albeit over a relatively short number of games) was tantalising.

It may come to nothing, but it's natural to get excited when you see a young lad starting hitting the ball out of the park.

He's only 22 and OPS'd above 800 in AA. His previous years were worse largely due to injuries.

He's not the next great pillar of this team, but he could be a valuable platoon guy or bench bat.

People are genuinely excited because the Sox haven't been able to develop much in house power recently.

Chavis hadn’t shown the power he showed last year. Can he repeat it? Can he make more contact? Can he reach base at a decent clip? His AA numbers weren’t world beating, so the idea that he’d skip AAA while he’s clearly not a finished product and moving him to a more difficult position that he’s not prepared for sounds like a bad combination. Chavis is one .750 OPS season away from being an afterthought

I'm not saying he "can't hit righties", I'm just saying he could be a good fit as a platoon or late inning bat against tough lefties.

I don't think many people expect him to be on the opening day roster. I think people just think that if he can repeat his performance in AAA, that we could see him in the second half.

If he was a college bat that didn't perform until his 4th season, it could be an issue of a "fluke season". Guys drafted out of HS typically don't rocket through the system and have no adjustment period. He's only 22.

Or maybe he'll just flame out like other big bopping MILBers like the Peter O'Brien's of the world.

Peter O'Brien hit his 10th AA homer today. He has also hit 10 A+ HR's. He leads the entire MiLB in HR with 20. He has power unlike anything we have had in this system in awhile

I think he needs to remain in Portland and produce in a full season. If he rakes, give him a cup of joe in September.

If you can post Judge as an example to push your point I can post Harper.

Both are outliers.

Chavis is a young 5'10' kid who has shown some pop in high A and AA in a small sample.

That is nice. Nothing to get excited about. Yet.

What's wrong about getting excited over something?

You got to get excited over something don't you? Can't be all about bb and fb here! I just wish Chavis was a bigger guy. He is solid but 5'10" 190 we have seen before.

Chavis has been hurt, so I think some view last year as his first real test on pro ball, and he did well.

I'm cautiously optimistic on Chavis.

He reminds me of of Valentin. Sort of.

Valentin was actually a good defender tho (and 6 ft tall)?

maybe Valentin looked 5'10 because our players were bigger then

I said sort of. Obviously I have not seen this kid play. I am speaking of visual appearance only.

Jesus. Everybody here has to have the final word.
