Will someone PLEASE sign Hosmer, before the Sox do??!!

You might get your wish, with this signing the teams with an opening will start getting nervous

One more off the table

Santana to the Phillies 3/60

Solid pickup - perhaps a mild overpay. He's always gotten on base and power is pretty good. And he can catch if there is a zombie apocalypse in the clubhouse. Of the three corner bats, he was the high floor low ceiling one

Santana hit 1 more HR than Moreland last season. Early rumors had him for around 3/35-40M. But a 20M a year is quite an overpay.
EE was a bargain last season compared to Santana.

Santana has a much longer history of getting on base. Moreland's best OBP season as a regular was .330. Santana's worst was .351. Both are pretty solid defensive 1B. I am not sure I'd have given Santana that money - but he is a better player than Moreland by a considerable margin.

But Carlos Santana had 2.1 more fWAR than Mitch Moreland this year (3.0 to 0.9).:)

Maybe higher AAV, but at only 3 years it's a good get. Better than the Hanley and Pablo contracts!

Now THERE is the lowest bar I've seen in a long time!! :D

most important job for a hitter is not making outs and Santana was a lot better at that

No he is not. He is better at some things which makes him better. But not by enough to justify difference in pay with Moreland.

I would not pay any more than 3/45 for Santana and that is an over-pay from where I sit.

Santana doesn't solves this team power need. That's an easy pass at 20M a year.

I think we end up with Morrison.

I agree. Or me may end up with Hanley or Moreland.

I agree as usual and I think that DD does too. He has become less desperate all of a sudden and the tune changes from of our illustrious DD questioners (dislikers). I absolutely believe that he has his fangs hooked into something that we will like in the end.

Yeah let's bring back Moreland.

Meet the new Sox. Same as the old Sox...

Would you say that if DD got Martinez and Moreland?

I see that as a gain offensively.

Probably not enough to outscore some teams but a move forward, anyway.

I'd rather take the chance that Morrison's 2017 was not just a flash.

I'd go with ....

1. JD & Morrison (plus a 5th starter)

2. JD & Duda (plus a 4th starter)

3. JD & Moreland (plus a 3/4 starter)

4. JD & Alonso (Machado's bros-in-law) plus a 3/4 starter.

I'd do all of these over trading for Abreu and signing a 2/3 starter.

He makes many fewer outs ...

Morrison is just as likely to hit 38 bombs again as he is to hit .200 with 15HR. He has to be plan C or D for you guys. If he winds up as a plan A or B, you're entirely at the whim of a wildly inconsistent yet talented player

Steamer600, which assumes 600 plate appearances for each hitter, projects 2018 WAR of 0.9 for Mitch Moreland and 2.9 for Carlos Santana:

And this translates somehow into a huge advantage in what? WAR?

My point is valid. His on-field value is not 3-4 times that of Moreland. Not even 2 times.

But if I masturbated looking at stats I may feel differently.

Carlos Santana is worlds better than Moreland. Mitchey 2 bags is not a very good hitter. He hasn't really ever been a plus hitter. Hes a plus defender who wont embarrass himself offensively. That's it.

I see that you have changed your mind or have warmed in some way to the idea of Morrison.

Maybe I am wrong in saying that but you seemed more sold on Duda and someone else weeks ago.

What's up?

I can understand this Doc. And I do.

All I have tried to say is that if the Sox do not or or not able for some reason to sign a big bat for first base, none of the big ticket options is worth ALL THAT MUCH more than Moreland.

I am talking strictly Bang For Buck. Not some projections from some geek.
