As one of the Twitter commenters notes, this is the 4th surgery since our GM said there'd be none.

He didn't say "there will be no offseason surgeries."

Typical Canadian fake news.

Per Abraham...

Per a source, #RedSox 2B Dustin Pedroia had surgery on his left knee at NY Hospital For Special Surgery today. Story soon at @BGlobeSports

Per the #RedSox: Pedroia had cartilage restoration surgery.

The surgery was described as successful but there is no indication how much of next season he will miss.

“Anticipated that Pedroia would return to games in approximately seven months"

Pedroia: Steven Wright had the same surgery with the same doctor on May 8.

With the early start this the season, Pedroia would miss 50+ games if he turns in that time frame.

Sounds about right but there will probably be a period to become reacclimated to playing at the ML level. Makes it clear that finding a fill-in at 2nd will be a priority. I believe the front office already anticipated this happening.

Signing Edurado Nuñez should be a priority for you guys (if he's healthy), he should be a nice place holder for a couple months

I think he's having winter surgery.

I suspect Eduardo Nuñez will be looking for a permanent gig.

And many Red Sox fans may be placing too much weight on his brief 38-game stint with the Sox as the 30-year-old Nuñez recovers from his own knee injury.

I just read in the web the Cubs are targeting Benintendi this offseason, don't know how realistic this is, but they say the only untouchables will be Bryant, Rizzo and Contreras, the rest of the roster will be fair game; knowing how Theo operates it's hard to believe,

In the hypothetical case it happens, who will the Sox should ask in return from the Cubs, Schwarber, Baez, Russel????

I agree, Nuñez will break your heart, all the talent in the world but something is just missing in this guy, this coming from a Yankee fan who had a lot of faith in him

If we're trading Benintendi, we're trading him for GFS (Stanton).

i think DD misunderstood the question.

he thought the reporter asked "how many Boston players are NOT having surgery this offseason"....

I feel the same, and even then, I'm trying my hardest to get them to take JBJ and better prospects instead.

That comment really does make Dombrowski look bad.

The Sox could probably get Stanton for less if they not only took his entire contract, but also agreed to take on the completely useless and very expensive Dee Gordon deal.

And now that we have an opening at 2b, stay tuned...

Dee Gordon has three years and about $39 million remaining on his contract after posting 3.3 fWAR, valued at $26.6 million, this year. The 2015 Gold Glove winner, who turns 30 in April, has posted an on-base percentage of .340 over the past three seasons. The Red Sox this year posted an on-base percentage of .329 after posting a .348 OBP in 2016,

Dee Gordon rebounded significantly in 2017 with a 3.3WAR season. He’s going to get a kings ransom in a trade

Maybe Stanton and Ziegler ($9M/1 yr). We need a lefty RP'er and $9M is a lot.

Then again...

Let's go all in, then. Make them take HRam, but we'll take all their big deals:

Trade:

HRam ($22M luxury)

18:$22M, 19:$22M vesting option

Plus who????? (Flores & Chavis)

For

Stanton ($25M luxury tax)

18:$25M, 19:$26M, 20:$26M, 21:$29M, 22:$29M, 23:$32M, 24:$32M, 25:$32M, 26:$29M, 27:$25M, 28:$25M club option ($10M buyout)

Volquez ($11M luxury)

18:$13M

Gordon ($10M luxury)

18:$10.5M, 19:$13M, 20:$13.5M, 21:$14M club

Ziegler ($8M)

18:$9M

[We could take Prado ($13.3M luxury) 18:$13.5M, 19:$15M, instead of Gordon.]

That's $56M luxury tax dollars (2018 only) in exchange for $22M for HRam. That's a net $34M for us and savings for Miami in 2018. They save way more later. We'd still be under the second penalty phase. (Adding Prado would allow us to move Devers to 1B, but would put the net salary at $47.3M. I guess we could ask for just enough cash to keep us under, although I don't really want Prado (and others listed). How many prospects would we have to include to save the Marlins that much cash?

1) Gordon 2B > Pedey

2) Bogey SS

3) Betts RF

4) Stanton DH

5) Beni LF

6) Devers 3B (1B)

7) Morrison 1B (Prado 3B)

8) JBJ CF

9) Vaz

SP1 Sale

SP2 Price

SP3 Pom

SP4 Volquez

SP5 Porcello

SP6 Wright>ERod

RP1 Kimbrel

RP2 Smith

RP3 Kelly

RP4 Barnes

RP5 Maddox

RP6 Workman/Hembree

RP7 Ziegler/Scott/Johnson> Thornburg/Ross

If GMs like one year samples and ignore steroid usage, maybe. Or they could save their "king's ransom" and a big chunk of $37mill and sign Jed Lowrie, who was worth 3.5fWAR. ..

Dee Gordon has posted 12.4 fWAR, valued at $98.2 million, over the past four years despite playing only 79 games in his suspension-shortened 2016 season. Gordon led the National League in stolen bases in those three full seasons.

In contrast, Jed Lowrie, who is four years older than Gordon, has posted 5.7 fWAR over the past four seasons.

Why are people so quick to push Bradley out the door?

The Marlins would be happy to part ways with Dee.

JBJ is my favorite Sox player.

I wouldn't call it "pushing him out the door", if Stanton is coming in the door.

I'd rather trade Bogey, if we had to part with a "B".

For a robust return in a trade.

As a point of reference, Dustin Pedroia has posted 13.9 fWAR over the past four seasons while Dee Gordon has posted 12.4 fWAR over the same period. Pedroia, who is 4+ years older than Gordon, is owed $71 million over the next five years while Gordon has three years and about $39 million left on his contract.

And, we'd have to pay someone to take Pedey, so I'm not getting the comp.

The point is, the Marlins are looking to cut $25M from their budget. I'm not saying they will hand Dee away for nothing, but I doubt it takes as much as you seem to think it will. Also, trading Dee (and one more guy) might allow them to keep Stanton one more year.
