removing them from the jdm market if they were in on it

The Pirates are committing themselves to a youth movement where they build a strong farm and condemn their fans to another 15 years of sub-.500 ball.

Another possible but unlikely candidate for the sox is out of the picture.

I suspect the Pirates are ahead of the curve in devaluing distant prospects in favor of MLB-ready players with higher floors (albeit possibly lower ceilings).

We were already ahead of that curve when we got Joe Kelly and Allen Craig for John Lackey.

When I went to the University of Notre Dame from '77 to '81, football and basketball tickets were included in the cost. I believe we paid about $6-9K per year for me to go there. Now, it's about $65,000 for tuition and room & board.

Having attended ND the same time you did (76-80), those are the figures I remember. Having a son who just graduated from there last May, I can say that the $65K figure is also correct. However, if you don't make too much money, they are much more forthcoming with aid than back in our day. My son got through for about 1 year's cost, maybe a little higher, having received quite a bit of need based aid. (I make a good salary, but it's not that good).

Students now pay for football tickets (about 1/2 the cost, which I think is ridiculous). Basketball (and hockey) tickets are free on a per game basis, but you have to reserve them ahead of time, and you need to get a couple to early season clunkers if you want to have a shot at a North Carolina or Louisville type game. No problem with this, as stuent atendence has been poor for years for all but the biggest games.

They didn't give much financial aid back in my day. My family had 4 kids in college at the same time! However, my sisters were paying $12-15K at Yale, and the understanding was that ND kept their prices lower for all to counter for financial aid to just a few.

What hall were you in? I was in the jock hall (Fisher Hall by the South Dining Hall. Joe Montana's room was in the same hallway as mine, but he never stepped foot in it. (I often wondered who collected all the envelopes the alumni kept slipping under his door!) We were there for some great years.

i cant wait for all this "business of baseball" to be done, whatever ends up getting done.it'll be nice to talk about the team or a game.

i lived in fort myers for a long time and having the sox there was a lot of fun.you can go to the stadium on non game days and pay admission to sit and watch the work outs.hang out right at the field and talk with players and coaches.on a crisp morning in florida theres nothing like it.for thrue fans theres nothing like it and i recomend it highly if you havent had the opportunity.it has a way of making everything feel new again :)

Spring Training has gotten expensive.

Last fall I spent about $15 on the secondary market for a seat on the lower level by third base for a San Francisco Giants game at AT&T Park (granted, the Giants were winding down a 98-loss season).

Now I'm shopping for tickets to the Seattle Mariners' game at the Giants' Spring Training stadium and the cheapest tickets -- direct from the Giants or on the secondary market -- are running $40 apiece.

The Mariners have instituted value seating for Spring Training, charging $8 for a lawn seat one night in a game against the Athletics and $12 for a lawn seat the following night against the Giants.

I hope the Sox don't find out about those prices. That's more than I pay for grandstand seats directly behind home plate.

I was almost as far away from Fisher as you could get, Flanner. Flannerites were well acquainted with Ross Browner and especially Al Hunter (great fun loving guy). There was a guy I grew up with (he was a year ahead of me throughout all our school years back in Oxford, CT) named Bob Mazaika who who lived in Fisher.

True story, when I was moving in my freshman year, my dad and I were moving stuff to the elevator. Ross Browner saw us, came over and picked up my trunk with one paw and took it inside for us.

After the Cubs and Astros both tanked and won a WS soon after, it looks like other teams are trying to follow their lead. That's not good for baseball IMO.

I'm starting to think maybe we do need a speech from Scott Boras crying collusion to liven up this offseason.

LOL. I didn't see this post before I made my point about collusion somewhere else.

I played hoops at The Rock with Orlando Woolridge, Silk Wilcox, Phil Pozderac, Luther Bradley and Jerome Heavens. JH was the nicest, most unpretentious guy I ever knew.

Did you know Sean Cleary & Steve Boyd? They are good friends of mine that lived in Flanner for a couple years before moving off campus.

Names don't ring a bell, but then the overall structure of the place didn't exactly lend itself to knowing many people on other floors.

On MLB Radio Dombrowski says he's comfortable returning the current team. He's expecting a lot of players to have better offensive years and he hopes to keep starting pitchers healthy. Says to get Boras on the show to find out what his current thought process is.

The jock I knew best was Rob Martinovich (starting OL for 2 years) as we were both Chem E's. Great guy; last I knew, he was the CEO or CFO of an oil company in Oklahoma. Had Hanklik in a couple of Calc classes. Engineering wasn't exactly brimming with jocks.

Steve Cichy lived down the hall from me; he was a dick. His roommate, Kevin Griffin (?), started on the DL his last couple years and was a super nice guy.

We probably ought to get this back to the hot stove league though.

Not everyone can pull it off. Most teams just stay in the losing column after several years of continual rebuilding. It should not be the new blueprint for success. The Astros were very lucky to squeak by The Yankees.

You have to do it the right way and ensure you deal for maximum return. You also need to take the best talent available when you get high draft picks. For years, the pirates had gotten high picks and they’d use them on garbage. I still remember Bullington going #1 and he wasn’t even a top 10 consensus guy. This was before the draft slotting, so the strategy made no sense.

Wow, such desperation!

;)

Dave is trying to make a point. He is now desperate to prove that he is not desperate.

Good one.

I've been high on JD for a long time, but I'm cooling off some.

I'd be okay with a solid pitcher plus Duda or Morrison, instead.

I can't see us doing nothing significant. We chose last year to reset the tax, so we could spend this year (and beyond). It wouldn't make sense to stand pat.

He just can't win here I guess! Thanks Ben LOL!!! I don't think he cares what we think. Good for him.

LOL! Or maybe he caught a case of Ben’s paralysis by analysis. Or maybe Larry L is secretly pulling the strings behind the scenes.

I'd prefer a top starting pitcher over a big bat, but I will be very happy if we sign JD to a (somewhat) reasonable contract. That said, I am cooling off on him some too because of the supposed "I'll wait into spring training to sign" comment. That just rubs the me wrong way for some reason.

I can't see us doing nothing either. I've been confident all offseason that Dombrowski will sign a big bat. I'm still confident about that, but the waiting is definitely wearing thin.

How did a tweak on Dave turn into a jab at Ben? LOL

FTR, I like his patient approach this offseason.

The guy that did the chat on MLBTR today thinks the free agents will soon start signing at a clip of one or two a day. That would seem to make sense. But this has been one wacky offseason.

What is it, the biggest game of chicken in history or something?
