Back when Sale was acquired I remember there was quite a bit of talk as to his previous seasons' performances as being superlative in the first half of the season and fading in the second half of the season.

Perhaps there is something to those comments. Maybe because he goes deep into most of his games, by the end of the season he is running out of gas.

Sale is 2-3 with a 4.64 ERA in his last six starts after going 14-4 with a 2.51 ERA in his first 24 starts.

Unfortunately this happens to quite a # of pitchers :( You hate to see it but they are human and by the second half of the season they start getting burnt out. Not to mention the 2nd half of the season is when teams go full pelt and give you absolutely everything they have to try and make a run at the playoffs. Being burnt out and getting the team's very best can be a lot for some pitchers. Sale was putting up near god like numbers in the first half of the season. It's unfortunate that he has come down from those numbers quite a bit but it is what it is. I hope he has a great outing tonight and gets some rest heading into the playoffs. At this point I just care how he performs in the Playoffs. Hopefully tonight will give him a bit of mojo.

They should try to rest him the next week or so. Get him fresh for the playoffs.

Agreed. I think he should make all his starts, but get out early. Price and Smith both need some innings under their belt before playoffs.

Be nice if they could, but if the Yankees stay hot, they may not have that luxury.

So he goes tonight, off day tomorrow. Do you have him go on normal rest, meaning he would pitch Monday and a week from Saturday? He would then be set up to pitch games 1 and 5 of the ALDS.

Or do you keep the rotation intact, meaning he pitches Tuesday and then is set up if there's a meaningful game on Sunday, Oct 1. If he goes on the 1st for more than a couple innings, he probably is only available for Game 2 of the ALDS (ALDS starts on the 5th).

I say normal rest and maybe if we have a huge lead get him out of there after 4 innings or something like that. Long rest periods can be good but you also don't want a pitcher going cold as well. Sale has been pretty consistent with his pitching this year and hasn't had any time off or anything like that. Sometimes you mess with that groove and it can throw a pitcher off. It's hard to say..... Although it's not like he has been super great lately anyway.

I wouldn't have pitched him tonight. I'd have given him 2 extra days rest, and then 1 or 2 extra here on out.

We need him to be rested and strong for game 1.

If we do not win the ALE there is only going to be one game.

You have to try and win the ALE. The Yankees lined up Severino to pitch three times to finish the year and he's already at a career high in IP. You have to go with your best and Sale is your best. You can rest him when you clinch, if you clinch

This.

With the Yankees 2.5 games back of us they can still take the division if the Red sox lose a couple in a row which is very possible with how inconsistent this offense has been. I completely agree with still starting the best pitcher. If we were L.A or Cleveland on the other hand its a different story.

Agreed. Until the division is wrapped up, Farrell needs to go pretty much all out. As the saying goes, they can rest in November.

It's odd because not too long ago, there were tons of complaints when Farrell started Fister in place of Sale, and that's when it was still marathon time, and getting Sale some extra rest made sense. This is not the time to rest him.

Moreland.

No, seriously, anybody but Sale.

Maybe give Price 2 innings, Workman 2, Velazquez 2-3...

What a bunch of f***ing dimwits. We are 2 1/2 games ahead of Yankees and you want to take a chance losing the lead? Moon, what is wrong with you? I thought you had more common sense. Let me get this f***ing straight. You are willing to risk division championship for wildcard so you can rest Sale? Are you f***ing nuts?

You can rest him AFTER we clinch the Division. You guys are f***ING NUTS.

Let's rest him NOW so he can pitch in PLAY IN GAME. That's smart.

It's pretty simple to understand. No need for vulgar insults.

We don't win jack without Sale being 100% strong.

He's started to look shaky and has a history of dropping off late in the season. We can't afford him to not be "the man".

Yeah, I get the argument that we have to clinch, but look at the schedule, he's scheduled to pitch the last game of the season-- no way we do that, so he ends up getting 9 days of rest once- right before his first playoff game.

I could easily ask "are you EF'in nuts? We not rest him 2 extra days now, 1 extra days before his next start and then 1 extra day before his first playoff game?

If we gag this season, it won't be because Sale was pushed back 1 game twice.

Besides, we're not going to lose our lead.

I'll just say this: without a strong Sale, we have no chance.

Sale has been everything we could ever dream of and more.

Think of how many wins our zombies on offense cost him earlier in the year!!!!

Ps: otani will be everything sale is, and more. Desperate dave needs to move heaven and earth to sign this kid in the offseason.

Maybe we should pitch Sale for 3 complete games- 140 pitches each- just to avoid a tiny chance of having to play in a play-in game.

NOT!

Congrats on 300. Once the game was in the bag (2-0) I would have liked to see him yanked. Sorry but this season should not be about individual numbers. We have a shot at a parade.....

111 pitches.

I'd not have even started him tonight.

We better rest him plenty from now until game 1.

I say throw the motherf***er out there again Tuesday and let him pitch until his arm falls off so the Sox take the division.

This is big dick time.

It's not the time to keep it in your pants.

Not starting Sale is playing to loose.

Nick is right.

Sale was leading the league in IP before tonight's 111 pitch outing.

He's been up and down the second half- much like his career numbers' pattern.

1st half 2.74 /0.974 WHIP

2nd half 3.28/ 1.143 WHIP

I agree winning the division is important, but it will do us little use, if "his arm falls off" on the last day of the regular season.

Maybe, I'm over confident with our chances. Maybe one extra day of rest before the end of the season will be enough for Sale, but I think he would greatly respond to extra rest.
