He gave up a ton of bombs last year too. Last year was a fluke in terms of his ERA. He's a 4.20 ERA pitcher for his career and he'll be lucky to finish around that mark this season.

 

Solo don't hurt, this year he is allowing 2-3 run bombs. He only gave up 23 last season. Already 25 This year.

Yes he stinks tonight. He has decent stuff--two seam fastball, four seam, slider, curve, change up. None of them great but still a good arsenal.

 

But he is dead meat when he can't hit the strike zone except right in the middle of it. His curve has been especially bad, but his slider not bad at all.

 

Control is the sine qua non for any MLB pitcher, and great control will allow you to succeed when you really don't have good stuff. Great control gets the hitter to hit your pitch weakly.

4.72 ERA is stinking for the entire year, not just tonight. Why doesn't he go back to his bread and butter -- his hard sinking fastball? As soon as he starts elevating looking for K's, he gets in trouble. Look at how well Fister did against the Guardians when he mastered his sinker. They didn't lift a ball out of the IF until the 4th inning.
