Best color man in the game... now we have to listen to Johnny Gomes, who can barely speak a coherent sentence of English and has a voice like nails on a chalkboard.

Just another reason to love the Price deal!

OB said last night that Eck would be back in a game or two.

He'll be back tomorrow night. Great thread.

Seems odd that Eckersley hasn't announced a game since the Shaughnessy... that's pretty much all I was trying to say.

I know he missed last weekend because of the HOF ceremonies... And the West Coast trip was just scheduled time off, I believe

Well the original article came out when they were on the West Coast, a trip Eck wasn't on (for personal reasons, he seldom does away games). He headed up to Cooperstown for the Hall of Fame ceremonies over last weekend; that was planned well in advance. Only the Cleveland series is an unplanned absence IMO.

Eck's personal reason is that he's a recovering alcoholic and he tries not to do long road trips

While not a secret, I felt no need to broadcast that fact.

I had a tag line on the old BDC site that said, "Having the right to do something doesn't make it the right thing to do".

That's appropriate here.

Well, Eck has openly admitted it. I see it more of a strength that he's able to know his limitations and puts his family over his career. Eck standing up and saying that seems pretty admirable to me.

Eck was into nose candy when with the Sox.

He kicked that too, fortunately.

Oh man - How about Fergie Jenkins?

Hence my words, "while not a secret". And it is admirable on the part of Eck. I just saw no need to expound on it and and have it brought up by, as good a poster as he is, a fan of the Evil Empire.

how's Billy Martin doing? Maybe Eck can help him out....

Eck is back tonight and I'm psyched!

As for all the randos that have filled in:

Gomes > Walker > Dinardo > Timlin > Salty > Boggs

Gomes really struggled at first and was boring as dirt. I think he upped the energy in later appearances and had an overall enjoyable vibe. Walker and Dinardo were both replacement level guys. Timlin, Salty and Boggs should never do a game again though.

31 flavors. i never like boggs as a player but i thought he did a good job in the booth. not easy for me to admit the bold part....

Well, I would have been even harder on Boggs, but he had that crazy homeless man's beard going on so I gave him extra credit.

What didn't you like about Boggs as a player -- too many batting championships... too high of an OBP?

The horse riding and Devil Ray HOF plaque contract parts probably.

I try not to listen any of those guys and sure don't think Eck is completely authoritative. But, when i do listen, I am impressed. He's objective and interesting. He knows a lot about the game and communicates that well. He is certainly better than any of those other guys. If NESN doesn't keep him at least until age 70, they are wrong. To me he never gets old.

Hahahah...

That had nothing to do with him as a player for the Sox.

Boggs was easily the best 3rd baseman for the Sox in my lifetime.

There is no room for discussion.

I think the beard looks awful but that is his choice.

He did well in the booth.
