I was going for 'worst case' scenario boys and girls. Don't get your panties in a bunch.

Mine are always in a bunch.

I don't see where "straw man argument" fits here.

Nobody knows.

We could have called up Devers two days later and seen a different (worse) result over a tiny sample size of a players first 10-15 games.

I don't buy into the Butterfly Effect.

Then you and your friends can retreat from the cliff?

I'll retreat from the cliff when the cliff is no longer there.

She meant "good shape" for 2018.

The good thing is, usually 1Bmen are easy to acquire and are not expensive. The bad new is, I don't see any FA 1Bmen that jump out at me an scream, "Sign me!"

We're in good shape for the 'window'. That's why we have a window.

WC game appearances don't count. Sox need to win the division.

They count if we advance.

Obviously, winning the division is far preferable. But get to the playoffs any way you can.

Posted
Especially since these guys are a .500 team on the road.

Oddly enough, Cleveland and Houston are both better on the road. Maybe we don't want home field 'advantage' over them.

WC play in game is a game to get into the playoffs. I want them in the playoffs before the end of September. The less crapshooting the better.

Nope, that certainly means that the Sox would lose on the road AND at home. RIP 2017 season. :(

Well, we all want that.

Well, that's just negative thinking. Maybe it means that we win at home AND on the road.

Which is why they should have signed EE in the offseason and promoted Devers earlier so that we'd have a much bigger cushion.

I actually think it just means it might wind up being a wash. I don't take much stock in home vs road splits and extrapolate them to a playoff series. You can do that in basketball and football because the playing fields are uniform. In baseball, there is too much of a variance from one park to the next to really project performance like that.

Ha. You are preaching to the choir. I have stated many times that HFA for the playoffs is not that important.

Just so we're clear, the WC games are in fact playoff games.

yeah, but they are more like play in games. like in march madness the 65 plays 66 to be a 16. that game is considered a playoff and part of the tournament but no one thinks so.

Play in games are to get into the playoffs. They are not themselves playoff games.

Was game 163 in 1978 a playoff game?

If no, I rest my case.

If yes, why is the additional game included in regular season stats.

Check mate wildcardists!

f*** yes we are agreeing!

Wild Card games are playoff games. In fact, two teams that tie for a final wild card spot would have to play an additional regular season game in order to determine which one goes to the wild card game. Given how tight the AL is this year, we might see that actually happen..
Posted (edited)

what is the difference between the additional regular season game and the next game the winning team plays?

(hint: nothing)

i will put it another way....i believe that if the Red Sox lose in the Wild Card game JF should be fired for not making the playoffs.

You're 100% correct about the 1978 playoff game being part of the regular season.

You're 100% wrong about the Wild Card games. They are playoff games.

Looks like MLB agrees with you.

Correct, correct, and correct. The one game wildcard game stats are included in postseason stats, not regular season stats like the 163rd game was.

Small sample size, but 79 runs scored in the 13 games in August!

6.1 runs per game

20 HRs, too.

We're still 9th in runs scored, but we are only...

1 run from 8th (DET)

12 runs from 7th (AZ)

19 runs from 6th (TEX)

(31 from LAD and 34 from NYY)

We're tied for 17th in OPS and tied for 18th in wRC+. nothing to write home about, but moving up, up, up.
