I cheer for results, not effort. I don't hand out participation trophies.

Without effort you wouldn't get the same defensive results from Pedroia. That's how his uniform gets dirty.

2015 was a bad year for him but he still had a 2.0 WAR in 93 games. Last year he had a 5.6 WAR. This year he's off to a slow start so you're hovering like a buzzard.

Having a negative opinion isn't hovering like a buzzard.

Pedey is a notorious slow starter.

Of the previous 5 years, he only started slow once. That was in 2014 when he had a down year.

Jesus Christ (sorry) you are s***ing me really. All that stat stuff - I can't follow it . thanks though. i will tell you that those early 60's teams were really something. Actually though they did have some guys who could pitch - Momboquette , Wilson(who could also hit the s*** out of the ball), Moorehead. Wilson and Moorehead both threw no hitters.

I was just pointing out that while things are bad now, they have been worse. 2014, 1992 and 1966 were pretty terrible years to be a Sox fan.

No, but you're all over a guy who had a 5.6 WAR last year because he's having a slow start and because you've been calling to trade him forever, instead of giving him a chance to come around.

He was great last year. I've never said otherwise. When he was hitting opposite field early in the season, I said that was a great sign for him.

Now, the writing is on the wall.

I'm giving him a chance to turn it around. He's my starting 2B in fantasy FFS.

Supported by the ongoing deficiencies by the carousel of players at 3B it seems quite obvious that the Sox need to fill that void in an otherwise solid starting roster, particularly defensive-wise. So if they are not going after Donaldson, or other competent third-baseman, are we prepared to accept the mediocrity thus far displayed.

Mike Lowell, where are you?

Oh I know. I was just kidding anyway. This has been a particularly frustrating beginning to a year for me. Unlike some, I never had great confidence in our ability to produce runs. I felt that with outstanding pitching and very good defense that we would be ok - win the east ok. Obviously we aren't scoring runs. I think not having anyone that any opposing pitcher really fears can change the complexion of any game other than Ramirez on a regular basis (sorry Mookie) has hurt this club greatly. Our defense has been unbelievably bad and the mental mistakes that we make almost on a nightly basis really are unacceptable. My position is that I hope things get better but i am pretty sure that what we have seen to date really is the team we have. We need a healthy Price for sure. Going forward if we don't come up with an explosive power bat to help us out, it is apt to be a long run for all of our young potential superstars.( a little sarcasm there)

I think the big difference now is that we had high expectations this year in comparison to 1992 (Butch Hobson and the go go Sox), 2014 (who cares about wins after a WS) and 1966 (last year before modern era of Red Sox).

Positives

Starting rotation

Sale is better than advertised.

Based on where they were at beginning of spring training, both E Rod and Pomeranz has pitched well.

Porcello, good news is he can only get better than he's been.

Price seems to be on his way back.

Relief

Kimbrel is pitching the way we expected him to pitch last year after coming over from San Diego.

Barnes has established himself as the 8th inning guy until further notice.

Kelly has shown signs of returning to his form of second half from last year.

Hembree appears to be a solid major leaguer.

Carson Smith may return in June.

Position Players.

Hanley had similar April as last year. Perhaps he'll warm up much sooner than he did in 2016.

Moreland has been a good buy at $5M. But he's a $5M rental. You get what you pay for.

Beni has continued to hit as predicted.

Xander is hitting for high average.

Betts had a slightly better April than last year. He'll get hot soon.

Our catchers our playing well defensively. Although the throw last night by Vazquez was just stupid.

Bradley is playing stellar defense.

Just not sure about 3B situation right now. I can see slump coming for both our catchers, not just one. Pedey just looks broken to me. I will always give him an A for effort. Bradly needs to go into his patented streaks, the other way.

i can tell you that certainly with respect to the 1967 season we were very surprised. Kind of thought that we were going to be better and it was exciting to see some talented young players but no one I knew at that time had any real expectations of winning. i think that your observation is a very good one. In '67, .500 would have looked pretty good. In '17 not so much.
