Wow, Hanley hitting .188 against Lefties, this year. Moreland .239, I expect that. That big drop-off by Hanley has hurt this team this season.

29th in the Majors with HRS against Lefties, in that park, that's a crying shame. 27 HRS for entire year, for HRS against Lefties. Of course some games on the road, but still.

Guardians lead baseball with 65.

Yes, and I think the newer Nunez is more likely what we'll see in the next few years than the old one, but he'll turn 31 next year.

I'd offer him a nice 2 year deal but might go 3, if the bidding got high.

Note: the guy was between .654 and .723 his first 5 years (mostly partial or half seasons worth of PAs). 2015 saw a .758 OPS in just 188 PAs. He followed that up with the exact same OPS in 2016 in over 500 PAs- his most PA season by over 250 PAs.

I really like Nunez, but it's really hard to know what to expect next year. He had a .732 OPS the first half this year.

Maybe he'll fall in love with the A.L.

That's a fair statement that it's hard to know what to expect from Nunez. I would expect versatility and speed as the floor though regardless of what ever else he brings to the table. 2 year deal plus a 3rd year club option perhaps?

I was responding to notin's post about the Chicago White Sox:

... but I recognize that some folks prefer to live in a small world.

No, not so much.

But a world in which a Red sox fan can read posts on a Sox message board without frequent comparisons of Sox players with a Mariner's player.

We have a Yankee sub forum here because the Yankees are always a hot topic and a historic adversary.

The Mariners are not relevant to any discussion of the Sox on most days.

With all the research that's done about pitchers and what they throw and when they throw it, shouldn't we have a good idea of who has control problems and who doesn't? If a hitter is facing a pitcher who throws a lot of strikes he should be swinging at the first pitch he thinks he can handle - but not necessarily the first STRIKE.

Maybe that's what they're doing. I don't know. It's possible that pitchers have done their research on the hitters too and they know what strikes a hitter doesn't like, but when I see a hitter take a first pitch in the middle of the plate I have to wonder.

So much of ml hitting is timing. They see where the ball leaves the pitchers hand and how fast it get to them. I can see the htters taking a pitch or two during the first AB, but then all pitches should be fair game if they are down the middle, particularly fast balls.

But he is not a high OBP hitter, .319 lifetime.

I'd rather look at what he is doing recently than look at lifetime figures. Hanley lifetime would be much better than he is doing now, for instance.

By way of comparison, what would you expect of Betts next year. Nunez has added an aggressiveness to this club. He plays an intense game and maybe lifts the club by his example.

I still expect greatness from Betts starting this year, so yeah, I expect great things next year, too.

Taking pitches can be a two edged sword. The ability to take more pitches can lead to a higher OBP and cause teams to use their bullpens sooner they they want to. It can also lead to missing a lot of first pitch strikes down the middle. Its hard to say what the best approach is, but aggressive free swingers often tend to have lower OBP's.

Whether one is a more aggressive hitter or a more patient hitter, I think the key is to be a disciplined hitter. Don't take pitches just for the sake of taking pitches, and don't swing at the first pitch just for the sake of swinging at the first pitch. A disciplined hitter usually knows when to take some pitches and when to come out swinging, all while staying within his game.

This time of year, managers have parge BP's and they tend to use them. In tonight's game, there have been a troop of relief pitchers against the Sox and we are having trouble figuring any of them out. We do miss Nunez.

Maybe Meche and Garcia should have been replaced at some point?

Interestingly, Freddy Garcia was in the rotations of both the 2003 Mariners and the 2005 White Sox...

I look at Hanley's age and injury history. I look at Nunez history of being mainly a bench plater and that most players don't peak at age 30. Plus, he is a free swinger and has a tendency to be on the lower end of OBP. I think we should temper our excitement a bit over his recent performance.

Even recently, he's been below .330 in two of the last three years. Nunez has been a plus offensively in several ways, but OBP is not likely to remain one.

Of course he his normal OBP isn't so bad I'd call it a detriment either...

His recent performance has been so good, he might price himself out of a utility role. ..

One of the biggest mistakes impatient hitters make when trying to learn patience and discipline is simply taking more pitches. The end result is often increased strikeouts with little to no improvement in walks...

Many hitters don't swing at first pitches except occasionally to keep pitchers honest. Many batters want to judge the velocity and movement and take the first pitch -- Williams, Yaz, Boggs and many other great hitters took the first pitch. Other great hitters are first ball fastball hitters.

Conversely, Mike Greenwell rarely saw a first pitch he didn't like, regardless of the type. Ditto Jody Reed.

Of course, Reed was nowhere near the hitter Greenwell was...

And Nomar was notorious first ball fastball hitter.

True. Although thanks to his OCD, he made his at-bats so long it was easy to forget when he only saw one pitch...

What? He just readjusted every finger on his bating gloves and his shoes before each pitch. He did it pretty quickly. LOL!!

We hit just enough to win after getting a strong pitching performance from Porcello. I know guys were tired and we did play some guys we normally don't. Young for instance, who is very cold at the plate these day. Hope we can keep Vaz in as he is hot right now. If not catcher, then DH him. Looking forward to Nunez's return although no word or actual date so far on that front.

Would love to see guys try to pull the ball with pitches down the middle. Betts did once, but Moreland, Beni and JBJ all hit the ball to center or go the other way. Center against the Rays is usually an out. We lose what power we have by not pulling balls inside or down the middle.

Good game for us as we are in the must win category on the road to save our bid for the pennant. The Yankees look like they won't more than 4 or 5 going down the stretch so we need to win the majority of ours. The magic number is 12 I believe and 8 for the WC. Much rather have the pennant.

This offense could use a boost that a return from Nunez could provide.

The word on Nunez now is that he may not get back during the regular season. That would be a real shame as I agree, we need his bat and aggressiveness.

The latest I heard was that Nunez was making good progress and that he could return on this road trip. Did you read something different this morning?

The team has played 55 extra innings, if I recall correctly. That is the equivalent of 6 extra games, which is a lot of extra physical and mental wear and tear. Our bullpen has been a strength in all of those extra inning affairs.

Our offense is still largely frustrating, but they are hitting enough to get it done.

It should be a really fun ride the last two weeks of the season.

Pretty good prediction in that last line. I agree.

I saw a mention in Omnisport by line Alec Brzezinski dated Sept 12th

The Red Sox will likely have to hold off their competition in the American League East without infielder Eduardo Nunez.

Manager John Farrell said Tuesday, via ESPN.com, that Nunez, who is dealing with a knee sprain and bruise, will be out for at least a week, and possibly the remainder of the regular season.

Nunez has been on a mission since joining the Red Sox from San Francisco earlier this summer. He has hit .319 with eight home runs, 27 RBIs and 22 runs scored in 37 games with the Red Sox.

Boston currently holds a slender three-game lead over the streaky Yankees, but they do have some room over the Twins and Angels for the first wild-card spot should New York rally

That would be a big loss for the team.

Tough to see Betts out of the game with a contusion. Hope that doesn't mean he will be out for an extended period as it is reported as day to day. With Pedey gimpy, Hanley out for an unknown time (not hitting anyway), Young just not a reliable option and Nunez's return still an unknown, we are short on quality right handed bats in the lineup. JF will have his hands full coming up with a threatening lineup.
