Because Joe Kelly has not figured out how to pitch yet. He has the stuff but no idea how to use it. Yesterdays debacle, while the entire bullpen stunk it up, was a great example.

Kelly needs to get his mechanics figured out, another outing like that and he could be back at Pawtucket.

If Thronburg can't come back and pitch effective like he did with the Milwaukee, this will be one of the worse bullpens in baseball. If him and Smith come back and pitch good they will be fine. We will see what happened yesterday more and more. This will keep happening until roles become more defined.

It's just typical Joe Kelly can't throw strikes consistently under pressure. He's so up and down. IMO the last guy you want in there with runners on base.

Kelly surrendered a single ER in his last 15 innings last year. From July 25 to Oct his ERA was 1.02 and for the year his WHIP was .500.

Joe Kelly is not going anywhere any time soon. As a RP he is fine; as a SP, not so much.

He is down on the depth chart right now behind Barnes and Hembree. One thing managers don't like is walks, in spring training he was walking a lot of hitters and yesterday he walked two in a crucial spot.

His command seems to come and go I could very much see Farrell letting him figure it out in Pawtucket.

Kelly has been pitching very well in relief. One bad outing and you are a bum ?

He was pitching well last year, he needs to get his command back.

Besides Koji, I can't recall a single RPer whose command doesn't "come and go". Kimbrel has no command at all; should he be sent down too? And didn't Hembree walk two guys yesterday before Kelly walked in the winning run? Kelly isn't going anywhere, at least until Smith and Thornburg are back.

To say Kimbrel has no command is ridiculous, to say Kelly hasn't battled this for years and is up and down is crazy.

The reason why Farrell backtracked from making him the eighth inning guy while Thornburg is out, is because his mechanics are out of whack right now.

Kimbrel had little command of his curve ball and occasionally has no command over his fast ball.

Kimbrels command may be off on a certain day, Kelly's problems seem to linger. He really struggled at the end of spring training, and the last two years he was sent to Pawtucket to figure it out.

I used to say that I want my closer to be able throw 100 mph. Now I've amended that. I now want a pitcher who can throw STRIKES at 100 mph.

That's Koji not withstanding. I still don't understand how Koji does what he does but I'm glad he does it!! Or at least I was glad. :D

Are we watching the same game?

Last year Kimbrel issued 30 walks in 53 innings. This is NOT what you want in a RPer, let alone your closer. Command has been an issue with him since his arrival in Boston. Kelly has had issues with command, but for the most part he did fine with it after July 25. I am certainly not going to judge where his command is after one outing.

Kimbrel might occasionally struggle with command, but Kelly struggles with control.

There is a big difference...

True but that was a little inflated by his horrific control in September, where he walked 9 hitters in 9 innings.

Before that, his 21 walks in 44IP wasn't so bad. It was a bad year for him, but it meant at his worst Kimbrel was Daniel Bard...

Much more important then throwing 95-100 is knowing where that pitch is going.

I believe Jamie Moyer has that tattooed on his left arm...

Not much difference at all as the end result is not enough strikes and too many balls resulting in too many walks. Both have trouble at times finding the plate, though Kelly found it for a long stretch last year. Kimbrel has never been able to throw strikes consistently with both pitches he uses, not in Boston at least.

Kelly found it for one month last year.

No there is a difference between control and command. Control is the ability to find the strike zone. Command is the ability to throw the pitch where you want it within the strike zone...

Yes but most of his career he has struggled to find it..

That's what i have been saying.

Great question. I can't think of a single reason why the All Star pitcher would be in the rotation over a guy with a 5 ERA over the past two seasons.

That was a bad sox trade, Darren Bragg was a serviceable 4th outfielder, but Moyer had a great career after that.

Kimbrel had more walks than hits in 2016. That's a control problem.

Kelly gave up more hits than walks. That's a command problem.
