Zero percent chance Chavis has meaningful AB's at DH for the Red Sox this year.

Agreed, but he may get a few PAs, and if he does very well, or someone gets hurt or struggles, who knows...

Carson Smith 1st Rehab went not too good. Pitching for Portland in 1st inning.

Walked the bases full, got 1 out, then taken out. 18 pitches 5 for strikes.

2 Of the walks scored. When Ball took over in a 1-0 Count.

As long as he feels good after pitching, I'm viewing this as a positive step.

I wasn't expecting a good first outing after so much time off.

I don't think you can really read much into the results one way or another.

Here's some breaking news Trey Ball sucks. Given up 7 hits in 3 innings. Edited by OH FOY!

Thank you Ben. You get a high draft pick for finishing in last place he completely botched the draft pick.

Final Pitching line for Ball tonight.

4 innings 12 hits, 2 BB's, 6 runs, 3 K's.

He let in 2 runs from Smith on a single.

12 hits. ha

Edit: Runners on while Manager kicked Ball in the ass, to get him out. 6 runs final line.

Agreed.

As long as his arm is not unduly sore it was a positive outing.

It is unrealistic to expect him to be over powering at this point.

He needs work.

A couple of years ago, when Ball was struggling, they should have taken a look at him as a hitter. I wonder if it is too late now to make that move.

It is hard to feel bad for a guy who got 2.75 million for nothing. That's robbery. I feel worse for the organization for blowing a top ten pick on a guy who stinks.

Agree, they should try Ball with the bat. Why not, get some vision. He had a real nice swing in High School, (I know, it's only High School), but see if that's something you can work with.

I use to have the tape of him hitting, cant find it. If someone here has it please Post it.

2 First Rounders in Portland, Ball and Owens. The Yanks Double AA Trenton, is dominating that league, with Younger Pitchers. The Sox bad Drafting will cost this team in the long run. Cost Free Agents, and Trades.

Lets Compare

Trenton Team ERA 2.81

Portland Team ERA 4.90

I believe ball has the pure stuff to be a major league pitcher. But his inability to put the mechanics of a repeatable delivery together is killing him.

This feels to me like a situation where he goes to Oakland or St. Louis or Tampa and they fix him and he becomes a solid major league pitcher,

Trey Ball still has a substantially better chance at contributing to a MLB club as a pitcher than he does a catcher. People want to salvage the pick value, that is a poor perspective to have on things. It is what it is, prospects bust, but this is all a result of his draft slot which we really really really need to drop. Why not take 1/2 the hitter in the minors under performing and switch them to pitching? why not take the worst 50 pitchers in our system and convert them to hitting.?

I don't, the organizations overall draft record is superb.

Exactly, it's his first start back, as long as he can let it fly without pain it's all good. He will have time to try and get his mechanics back on track.

I bet I can find two top draft picks on every MLB team who is laying an egg somewhere in the minors. The Sox larger overall track record of drafting is pretty good and better than most teams.

I bet I could too. Positional Players they are good, Pitching they are not good at all.

Owens has 6 BB's in 4 innings. From the Majors to Double AA, seems its other way around. Not too many 1st Rounders do that.

Most first rounders don't even make it to the majors.

The thing is, every team has Henry Owens and Trey Balls, and Lars Andersons, and Will Middlebrooks. We just aren't aware of them, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. In 3 years from now we'll still now who Henry Owens is but 99.99% of other teams fans will not. Again, the overall track record of this team on developing young talent is superb.

Kind of a lesser version of Daniel Bard.

I get that Bard crashed and burned, but he gave us 3 years of good to very good pitching at the ML level. Owens gave us squat with the bigs.

I think some might have forgotten just how long Bard was good for us.

2009 3.65 ERA/1.277 WHIP (11.5 K/9) in 49 IP

2010 1.93/1.004 (9.2) in 75 IP

2011 3.33/0.959 (9.1) in 73 IP

Spin it any way you want, not in Pitching. Positional excellent, Pitching Development Poor.

No doubt. Developing top pitchers has been one of our biggest weakness, if not the biggest, for at least 9-10 years.

Outside of Tampa, St. Louis and the dodgers, not many teams crank out tons of pitching.

Finding and developing pitchers remains a difficult task by any metric available.
