MLBTR....

It seems the Red Sox are positioned to land the top Venezuelan prospect when the new July 2nd signing period opens, Ben Badler of Baseball America writes. Catcher Daniel Flores draws rare praise for his skills behind the dish. And while there’s still some work to do with the bat, Badler says there’s still power to be tapped into for the switch-hitter. You’ll want to read the entire post for a full sense of just why Flores is seen as such a special prospect. It seems Boston could return to the international market with a bang after finishing a one-year ban on bonus pool-limited signings.

Cool.

Just what this franchise needs. Another high priced and much ballyhooed International prospect.

He's subjected to July 2nd rules so his cost will be absolutely nowhere near guys like Moncada or Castillo. One of those guys brought you Chris Sale. Sox have had more success in the international market than most teams and when you look up/down the roster it's hard to find a guy on this team that either isn't an international signee, or was traded for using one.

We could use a few hits in this market to replenish the farm system.

Lowell Spinners started their season yesterday, and Groome started 1st game. So-so, 2.1 inning, 1 hit 1 ER, 3 K's. Interesting the Sox held him back, so he could go to short Season for Lowell.

I believe he was also battling with an injury. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends the year in Greenville.

Is this a reference to the Moncada thing? Because Flores, well-regarded though he seems to be, isn't generating anything close to that kind of extreme hype and won't get the same kind of extreme bonus, either. (Not that we could give it to him anyway, if my understanding of the new system is correct...under the new CBA we have a bonus pool of $4.75 million and are subject to a hard cap, so there's no more ignoring the limit and simply paying a penalty. I'm sure what we did with Moncada probably had something to do with that.)

Because we're talking about 16-year-old kids here, the odds are obviously that most of them won't amount to much, but we've done a pretty fair job of finding talent on the international amateur market in recent years, with the likes of Xander Bogaerts, Jose Iglesias, Manuel Margot, Rafael Devers, Anderson Espinoza, and so on.

Notable Sox International signings over the years.

Hanley Ramirez (Josh Beckett/Mike Lowell)

Anibal Sanchez (Josh Beckett/Mike Lowell)

Felix Doubront

Jesus Delgado (Josh Beckett/ Mike Lowell)

Dice -K

Hideki Okajima

Stolmy Pimental (Brock Holt)

Junichiwa Tazawa

Xander Bogaerts

Jose Iglesias (Jake Peavy)

Frank Montas (Jake Peavy)

Manuel Margot (Craig Kimbrel)

Luis Alexander Basabe (Chris Sale)

Javier Guerra (Craig Kimbrel)

Yoan Moncada (#1 prospect in baseball, Chris Sale)

Rafael Devers

Anderson Espinoza (Drew Pomeranz)

This list is incomplete and leaves off dozens of guys who were considered prospects and some of those guys were traded for guys who aren't on the team any more and never worked out e.g. Eric Gagne. Theres also a ton of guys not on that list who may not be stars, but they have big league experience and in some shape or form added value to big league teams at some point.

Looks like Chavis got promoted to Portland, according to their Roster.

Yup, either yesterday or the day before. They were waiting for him to play in the AS Game before they promoted him.

Chavis DH tonight. Dogs lineup: Mars LF, Lin CF, Devers 3B, Barfield RF, Chavis DH, Olt 1B, De La Guerra SS, Romanski C. Tobias 2B. McAvoy P

I was a little concerned with Chavis numbers the last month in Salem. His K rate was up and everything else down (except a few homers)

Still, it's a relatively small sample size and perhaps he was just pressing because he was a bit bored down there.

Chavis homered on the first pitch of his first at-bat in Double-A.

He sure makes that 2014 draft look a lot better than it did a year ago. (Travis is helping, too.)

Todays starting line-up between Pawtucket and Yanks Scranton Wilkes Barre.

The average age for Pawsox is 28.4

Scranton its 25.6 only reason its this high is because Ellsbury is rehabbing, othwerwise it's 23.8

Nice time to visit Maine, enjoy yourself.

It is a great time to visit Maine. We finally get our summer. Have a great time watching the youngsters.

Something tells me Chavis is going to be trade bait this summer...not that I'm wishing for that (how often do we see a power display like this in our system?), but he's behind Devers on the 3B depth chart, he doesn't really have a real positional home or clear path to the majors at the moment, and his value may be the highest it's ever going to be. Sounds like a guy Dombrowski wouldn't hesitate to move.

Chavis isn't behind Devers as he won't play 3B after this year.

At 5-10, Chavis is probably too short to play 1B. Our OF seems set for a couple more years. That leaves DH, assuming HRam can play 1B for the next 1-2 years.

I could see Chavis being traded, maybe even this deadline, but I hope not. We need some power on this team, and he may be our best young hope.

I agree that Chavis will likely move off position, but I also agree that he is trade bait. DD is trade happy, and with the system depleted and the only two blue-chippers left in areas of need it makes sense that a guy who significantly raises his stock like Chavis is something for him to dangle to another team.

I think Chavis could handle 2nd as well.

If his target time is late 2019 or 2020, there may be an opening at 2B by then.

Let's assume DD will keep Devers and Travis, since 3B and 1B will be big holes next year. Let's also assume we keep Groome as good SP'ers are always in need. Here's what's left:

Chavis 3B/DH/OF/2B? (Does seem like the most likely trade bait this summer or winter, despite the lack of power in our system at this time.)

Chatham SS (Bogey may bolt to free agency at the time CJ is ready.)

Ockimey 1B (If Travis stumbles, we may want to keep Josh around.)

Lakins RHP (Is not having a good year.)

Dalbec 3B (If Devers stumbles, Bobby might be our next best internal hope at 3B/1B.)

Longhi 1B (Could be trade bait.)

Anderson, Shawaryn, Mata, Hernandez, Beeks, Raudes P (One or two could be trade bait)

This is really a lack luster list. Chavis has definitely raised his stock some and Ockimey has shown a good approach at the plate but both these guys value will be tied into their bat as their defense is sub-par. This is more true for Ockimey who can only really play 1B.

Most of these guys have more paths to never playing in the bigs than ever becoming everyday regulars. Beeks, Shawaryn, and Anderson have value as potential future relievers but this list shows the Sox lack of depth in the farm system.

Mata might be a guy who commands some interest as he probably has the highest upside arm after Groome in the system.

Bryan Mata/Chavis/Ockimey might get you a decent 3B....but it won't get you the Moose. Unfortunately, our system has been so depleted there is no way we would get an all star caliber player without giving up Devers/Groome. Maybe you part with one of those guys if you are trading for a guy who is about to hit FA.

Well said. I think we either bring Devers up when we know we won't lose a year of control or make a minor trade for decent 3B rental.
