Iguess the coaching at Portland may be better suited for bringing along Devers' defense, and with devers staying at Portland, I can see why they don't move Chavis up to Portland.

I'd just like to see, maybe for selfish reasons, how Devers and Chavis hit at a higher level. If the plan is to bring Devers up in September, or earlier if there is an injury, then why not let him face some older pitchers closer in skill level to MLB pitching?

Chavis bat is definitely ready for a promotion, his glove not so much. Eventually I'm guessing he will be converted to a corner outfielder or first base. Though he is kind of short for first.

I'm sure the coaching at Porland can help address any defensive shortcomings Chavis might have at 3B. I think the main thing keeping Chavis at Salem is the fact that Devers is blocking him at Portland.

Moving Devers up would allow for a clean promotion of Chavis.

The Sox don't seem to like moving a player off his comfort position. It's been sort of a pet peeve of mine, as we seem to keep having to move a prospect to a new position for 10 games before calling him up to play a new position of need. (Although a quick move worked for Betts, I feel like the moves of Bogey to 3B, Swihart to LF, Beni to LF, Moncado & Marrero to 3B were needlessly rushed.

Chavis will be very blocked by Devers. Think his position change will happen next spring training.

Yes, it could. If Travis flops, we may see Devers or Chavis moved to 1B, especially if HRam and or Pablo can't play there next year.

It would be great, if Travis could play FT 1B next season and Devers FT 3B. HRam could DH and maybe play 1b in NL parks and Pablo could try and get some ABs at 3B, 1B and DH, if he's still around.

The money "saved" by not having to replace Moreland and Young could cover arb raises and maybe go towards extending someone early, if possible.

C: Vaz-Leon(Swihart AAA)

1B: Travis (HRam/Pablo)

2B: Pedey-Rutledge or Marco

3B: Devers-Pablo

SS: Bogey- Holt (or Marrero AAA)

LF: Beni

CF: JBJ

RF: Betts

DH: HRam (Pablo)

SP: Sale, Price, Porcello, ERod, Pom, Wright

RP: Kimbrel, Smith, Thornburg, Kelly, Hembree, Barnes

That could be a solid 25.

the rest of the 40 man...

26 Swihart

27 Johnson

28 Hernandez

29 Ross

30 Scott

31 Workman

32 Marrero

34 Owens

36 Martin (or + J Callahan- Rule 5)

38 Ysla (or + Lin- Rule 5)

38 N Ramirez (or + T Buttrey- Rule 5)

Moncada is slumping big time at Triple AAA. Month ago was hitting .341, now .271. Lot of K's too, and only has stolen 13 bases.

Moncada was another expensive splashy move by Cherries that is turning out to be a dud. Thank goodness that DD sold high on him. Edited by a700hitter

I misspoke. Obviously, the Moncada move had Lucchino's fingerprints all over it... if Moncada turns out to be a bust.

Writing Moncada off for 1 bad month as a 22 year isn't right. Although my sarcasm alarm is going off. Still it is fair to point out he's still a prospect and SALE is proving he was worth that trade.

Michael Chavis has impressed. If you write off last seasons struggles due to battling injury then you're left with a guy who struggled his first full year of pro ball but showed power. But now he's putting power together with approach, and he's doing it at a higher level. It could just be the 1st round pick shine but I think if he can perform at AA he's a guy again. Might even earn his way into top 100. No way he moves off 3rd for Devers whose defense is reportedly excellent. I ponder if he could transition into 2nd base.

The system is weak, I'm not fooled by some good performances but there's talent there. With Chavis re-emerging, a few hits in the draft and a good international signing period we could put a decent dent in the drop off of talent we saw. It helps when guys become good prospects out of nowhere.....I'm looking at you Brian Mata.

I always appreciate your thoughts on our prospects Hugh. I know that you follow them very closely, so I value what you have to say about them. Thanks for the good posts.

Don't look now but Rusney Castillo is hot in Pawtucket. Could be important in case of injury.
His contract is a sunk cost. We will not see him in a Red Sox uniform because of the 40 man roster issue. We can only hope that he stays hot and that we can trade him. My question is whether we would have to add him to the 40 man roster before we trade him. I don't think so, but I am not sure.

I doubt we'd have to add him, as players not on the 40 man roster are traded all the time.

My question is about paying part of his contract. If the team we trade him to, adds him to their 40 man roster, and we are paying part of his salary, does that payment now go against our luxury tax cost, even if he wasn't on the 40 man when we traded him?

It's hard to imagine any team wanting Castillo at his full cost, even if he is hitting well at AAA.

If we trade him and cover part of the contract does that go against our luxury tax limit? I know the luxury tax has big implications for keeping him in Pawtucket but I'm not sure how the works if he's traded to another team and they call him up the big leagues.

If you can hit .306/.342/.498 and a team wants nothing to do with you because of your contract I doubt they'd want to pay you to play elsewhere. They'd be better off keeping him in Pawtucket in the off chance Benitendi/Betts and JBJ all get into a car accident.

There is ONE thing I find intriguing about Castillo and it is his power is up this year. When the Sox were looking at Castillo the scouting on him was he had all the tools but power but scouts thought with his body type, added strength, and adjustments he had made that he would develop power. If that power is real he might actually be able to contribute at the big league level. Problem is, we don't need him at ALL.

This may be a bad ideal, and honestly I' am no one...I know nothing....but why not throw him an infielders glove and teach him some 3B? Even if he's marginally better than Sandoval after a month or two there you can DFA Sandoval and stash his contract in Pawtucket and have lost nothing by calling up Castillo.

Castillo played some third base in Cuba, did he not? I don't know if that's an idea the team would entertain, but it might be the only way he ever gets a real shot to play in Boston.

Henry would love to save a few million, so if we could trade him and save money, assuming the rules allow it, I think he might be traded. Even if the money is taxed, if we work out a deal where we save more money than the increased tax would be, we might do it.

The contract affect on the luxury tax makes adding him to the 40 man roster prohibitive. I guess we could add him for just part of this year, so his contract would be pro-rated, and then DFA him again at some point, to take the luxury hit away in future years, assuming he does not earn a roster spot while up in Boston.

Let's just say hypothetically Castillo was a better option at 3rd than Pablo. If they put Pablo on waivers they could send him down to Pawtucket once he clears and take him off the 40. I'm s little rusty on the rules because I've been working 12 hour days and haven't brushed up on the rules lately but I believe if that happens Sandovals $$$ comes off the books and Castillo goes on if they add him.

All hypothetically of course, but if this was plausible you'd think they'd switch Castillos position and give him some time there.

I tried that idea a while ago and was schooled on the rules.

Pablo would refuse his AAA assignment and once he cleared waivers, anyone could pick him up with th Sox paying his $19M and every penny counting towards the luxury tax budget.

Because of his service time in MLB, he had more rights than Castillo did, when we dropped him from the 40 man roster.

Lowell Spinners started their season yesterday, and Groome started 1st game. So-so, 2.1 inning, 1 hit 1 ER, 3 K's. Interesting the Sox held him back, so he could go to short Season for Lowell.

Farm Updates:

Michael Chavis drove in the game's only runs with a two-run double in the bottom of the first. That was enough to earn the 21-year-old righty the all star game's MVP honors in front of his home team's crowd.

Rusney Castillo continued his torrid June with three more hits in Tuesday's loss, raising his average to .309.

Rafael Devers saw his average dip below .300 for the first time since June 1 with a 0-for-4 performance

Jay Groome ended up being charged with the loss, despite allowing just one run in his abbreviated return to the mound.

I bet Devers stays until the AA AS Game too then gets promoted to AAA. I'd rather they just bring him up this afternoon though.

@alexspeier

As @SPChrisHatfield and @IanCundall note, Devers and Chavis had a timeshare at 3B in Greenville in '15. Both developed defensively during it

Chavis is still getting over elbow inflammation which is causing him to be a part time DH. Maybe Chavis sees some time in LF? My guess is Chavis is 3B/DH this year and works on OF in the offseason. His glove is putrid right now.

Sounds right, but the Sox seem slow to move prospects to positions they likely will end up at in the bigs.
