Last year, after 100 games, we were 55-45 and in the midst of losing 4 straight and 6 out of 7 games.

We then went 6-7 over the next 13 games.

People seemed happier with the team last year.

High expectations, the sense of a small window for success, and an extremely disappointing and dull offense.

Last year, our rotation and pen were rather dull at the 100 game mark (with Wright out injured).

Posted

Robbie Ross to 60 day DL to make room for Devers on the 40 man roster.

Kyle Martin to AAA to make room for Devers on the 25 man roster.

Considering all the injuries our pen has dealt with this year, we hardly heard about the loss of Ross. He has been one of our steadiest pen arms over the past 2 years.

1. Kimbrel

2. C Smith (out all year, so far)

3. Thornburg (out all year)

4. Kelly

5. Ross (out for most of the season)

6. Barnes

7. Hembree

8. Abad

9. Workman (missed most of the first half)

10. Scott

11. Elias (missed all season)

Plus...

Boyer, Taylor, Maddox, Martin, Ramirez

Marrero sucks.

Not exactly. Marrero's offense sucks. But we're going to be worse defensively (a/k/a giving up more runs) with Devers there than Marrero.

In terms of errors Devers 3B defense is 2017-Sandoval-esque and I can still remember how little I liked that.

It appears Devers has much better range than Pablo. Maybe the error count might be similar, but I'm pretty sure the 2017 Devers will be a step or two up from Pablo's defense.

Now there's a low bar if I ever saw one!

Marrero sucks.

Marrero is not the long term solution at 3B, but he did stabilize our defense at a time when it was sorely needed.

He's done well vs LHPs in a small sample size, but I agree. We needed a new 3Bman, and Devers now has his chance.

It seems like almost everyone wanted him called up, and now it sounds like lots of doubts.

I don't have lots of doubts, but I think his defensive readiness is a valid concern. I am actually very excited about having him up. I'm just questioning the timing of the call up.

I would much rather go with Devers than overpay for a marginal upgrade.

This, absolutely. If the team is going to make a change at least this is the right change.

I would have stayed with Lin's hot hand.

Interesting Moncada's playing 2b. Went 1 for 5 today and struck out 4 times. I'm sure this kid will eventually live up to the billing, but from what we saw last year and so far this year, he has a lot to figure out hitting wise. At least he won't be under the pressure he would be here unless it lasts. With the way Sale has pitched for us, we still had to make this deal all day long. Until a player establishes himself, you just never know, and then injuries and health issues arise.

Put Devers at first and Shaw at third. Oh thats right we traded Shaw. Me bad...

I think devers ends up at first.

At some point we have to think about moving bogey to third.

Yankees have 65 games remaining with only 4 days off.....We only have 61 games left after tonight. Advantage Red Sox.

Could be. The problem is, we have no good SS in the system near ML ready.

Nobody should know anything with any sort of certainty after any 8 day sample size.
Well we should be able to tell if he is completely over matched like Moncada was last season.

This team can't hit itself out of a wet paper bag right now. They can't even beat these s***** teams in their schedule. Someone will pay dearly for these mediocre results!

yup - anybody who actually pays to go see them play. When real fans go to fenway, they will be ok as long as they understand that most of the people there are just going for entertainment purposes. Who cares about the outcome of the game.

Maybe we can find a SS at the trade deadline and move Bogaerts to third at least part time.

I doubt that would happen mid season. Plus, it would involve moving Devers to 1B with no experience there.

Someday, maybe. Maybe it's just a dream I keep having.

Here's my view for Part 2, this team should STFU, and do their jobs.

I still say this team has no fire. We struggle with the fundamentals (most recently, see HRam's throw home last night).

They'll never do it this season, but I think maybe a manager change might shake things up some.

Maybe a fiery guy like Bobby V!

I would have too, if such a thing existed. ;)

It exists. They often appear throughout the year depending upon how you build your sample.

My favorite part about NESN broadcasts is how much they love talking about short hitting streaks. "Pedroia has hit safely in the past 9 games and it hitting .375 over that time period!" Well, of course his batting average will be probably be higher if he's had at least one hit in each game. When Utley hit safely in 36 games, his average was .405. He still only wound up hitting .309 that year.

The "player is hot" is more theoretical than anything else.

One pundit at least thinks Devers will bulk up as he fully matures, leaving 1st as a better long term solution. It won't happen this year but sounds like a possibility going forward. His battng profile fits either ist or 3rd.
