Who goes to the pen if you pick up Gray?

Price is on the DL, and ERod has looked shaky.

You just don't pass on a chance to get a guy like Gray.

Look at the Dodgers: they just acquired Darvish and they were already stacked deep with starters- though some are injured like us.

You nver stop looking for cheap ways to bolster your rotation. We can always trade away a starter, if we end up with too many.

Swihart is barely a prospect anymore.

If someone can put together a package of our prospects that would be roughly equivalent to the Yankees package, then we can have a discussion. The injuries to 2 of the Yankee guys obviously muddies the waters, but I'm sure someone objective like harmony could do this.

How about...

Travis, Beeks & Lakins? (Maybe add Maddox)

or

Ockimey, Holt, Beeks & Lakins? (Maybe add Maddox)

Gray is short in stature. Only 5'10". We need taller players! No thank you!

Holt...too funny. You and 700hitter can put together a package with Holt and Swihart as centerpieces.

How about some prospect rankings numbers?

I never came close to saying Holt and Swihart were centerpieces. I actually implied they could be throw-ins, if the A's were interested.

My main point was that DD apparently never even asked about what it might take.

Different GMs evaluate players differently than others and us. Maybe Beane really loves Beeks, Lin and Ockimey. Maybe not.

I think Chavis would have gotten Beane listening. Groome too.

I was joking about Holt and Swihart of course.

Where did you get the information that DD didn't make any inquiries?

MLBTR said DD did not inquire about SP'ing.

My suggested offers were meant as starting points. I might have ended up offering...

Groome, Ockimey, Beeks, Lakins and Swihart

or

Chavis, Dalbec, Beeks, Lakins and Swihart

Maybe switch Travis for Dalbec or Ockimey. I'd have avoided offering Mata, but if the A's insisted I might try to find a way.

Guys like Gray are not offered that often for no top 40 prospects at all.

They don't need one

Every team can always look to upgrade their rotation.

With Price on the 60 day DL and ERod still trying to regain form after his injury, I'll take Gray over Fister or Kendrick/Johnson everyday of the week.

If we end up with 7 healthy starters next year, I'ms ure we can find a team willing to trade for one of them. Gray is also under team control for one more year than Pom.

I thought we were dead meat tonight against Cleveland with Fister pitching. Instead, Fister had a good game and showed he still could be valuable. Cleveland is a tough lineup and to hold them scoreless for 7 2/3 innings and to do it emphatically was encouraging. Meanwhile our 217 million dollar man sits with a sore forearm. With Reed we now have a reliever we should have had with Thornberg. Pitching is still good.

Fister came up huge when we really needed a win. I didn't have a whole lot of confidence in either him or our offense, but I'm happy to say that they both proved me wrong.

The news on Price this evening is optimistic.

I am shocked that fister spun as good a game as he did.

I doubt he ever comes close to repeating this performance ever again, but wow! What a jolt he gave us tonight. Finally we catch a break.

Now we need to build on it, one game at a time.

They supposedly made a tweak in his delivery. Maybe he can come close to repeating it. Fingers crossed.

We just don't have the pieces to compete with the Yankees in a trade.

I would not want to get in a prospect bidding war with them.

Maybe not, but the Yanks didn't give up any of their top 3 prospects. I'm not saying with certainty that Beane valued what he got more than Groome or Chavis or others, but if the reports were tru that DD didn't even inquire, then I'm wondering why.

It might have taken Groome, Chavis and Beeks to come close.

I have a hard time believing that he didn't even inquire. His top priorities were a 3B and a RP, so it seems to follow that most of his time was spent inquiring about those pieces. But I would bet that he also inquired on starters, including Gray, but never got into serious talks about starters because he deemed the price too high for a piece that he did not consider a priority.

Why does beane continually feed the Yankees on the cheap?
In the 70's, the Guardians fed the Yankees like crazy. Steinbrenner had his Cleveland roots and he hired Gabe Paul as GM who had been GM for the Guardians. They practically gave them Craig Nettles and Chris Chambliss, and I think there might have been someone else. I always thought that the Guardians GM was getting a nice cash bonus from the Boss.

Fangraphs had all 3 of the Yankee prospects in their 2017 top 100. What 3 did we have left that were comparable?

You may be thinking of Dick Tidrow, who was at least a serviceable reliever for the Evil Empire in the mid-70s.

But those deals have nothing on the incestuous relationship between the Yankees and the Kansas City Athletics in the late 50s. Notables who went from KC to NY: Ralph Terry, Hector Lopez, Roger Maris, Art Ditmer, Clete Boyer, Bob Cerv and Harry Simpson, most acquired for castoffs. Cerv and Terry were originally signed by the Yankees, dealt to KC for a couple of years and then reacquired. The attached article has a more complete list, but the bottom line was that the KC Athletics of those years were serving as a virtual farm club for the Yankees. It notes that of the players on the 1961 Yankees (one of the best teams of all time) 10 had played with the Athletics.

Yes, you are right about that. The KC A's were like a farm team for the Yankees. They would develop a good player and sell him to the Yankees for a few bucks.

Coulda swore I read it on MLBTR, but it's not there (anymore?).

Maybe it was just a vivid nightmare.

Weird stat on Sale

Games he gives up less than 3 earned runs

Sale is 6-3, Sox are 8-5

Games he gives up 3 or more earned runs

Sale is 7-1, Sox are 8-1
