I said from the start, our pen is the weakest link ("not weak but weakest").

Now it looks worse than I expected.

Last year Kelly missed a month and Tazaw 18 days with the same injury. Sucks but will be back.

Beautiful. Will we ever see Smith or Thornburg throw a pitch for us?

Smith has 4 years of team control, so I'd say yes to him.

Thornburg has 3 years remaining. I say yes here too.

Who knows if we will see them much this year, but we should.

MLBTR...

Thornburg has a shoulder impingement, according to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe. Thornburg won’t throw for another 10 days, and Abraham notes that this injury could sideline him for a month (Twitter link).

Thank goodness we have Jacko to make sure all the bad Sox news gets reported.

Only bad news.

Yes he does deserve our thanks.

Anyone put off or offended by his post is thinking on a juvenile level.

Everything he said is true. DD's big moves to shore-up the pen have gone up in flames.

i must be juvenile then, oh well. Thornburg will be out for about a month and Smith should be back in June, they have control over both pitchers for years, would not call that going up in flames.

True, but in the shorter term things do look rickety. Better hope Kelly, Barnes, Hembree, etc. can step up to compensate somewhat.

I think they can hold the fort for a month, they all have above average stuff. Farrell has to manage them correctly.

10 days no throwing then they will re evaluate him. DD and his reliever trades...

Funny, I was saying the same thing yesterday.

Like the Sale trade, I was never a big fan of this trade, but after seeing Pablo this spring, I understand the reasoning behind giving up Shaw for Thornburg. This sucks, because the offense will almost certainly not be as good as last year, so we can't win those 11-10 ball games any more.

Dubon > Shaw

I didn't care that Shaw was moved for Thornburg. However, adding Dubon made it an overpay for me.

True, but we needed to replace Koji, Ziegs and Taz, and Thorn looked like a very good option among available RP'ers.

it'd been nice if we got another piece back. Was that a 4 for 1 trade? or a 3 for 1 trade?

Shaw, Dubon & Pennington for Thornburg.

I have often advocated for a 3 or 4 or even 5 for 1 deal, but I think we may have gotten out of hand:

Deals since Jan 2015:

Moncada, Kopech, Basabe, Diaz for C Sale

Shaw, Dubon & Pennington for Thornburg

Margot, Guerra, Allen, Asuaje for Kimbrel

Two-for-Two deals:

Miley & Aro for Smith & Elias

The one-on-one deals:

Espi for Pom

Abad for Light

Doubront for Marco Hernandez

Ranaudo for R Ross

Oh come on. You're the one who told me about the infamous chart.

Jacko doesn't bother me. I like him. I've said before that he's a very good and knowledgeable poster. When he's not trolling, that is.

FWIW, I think you're a very good and level-headed poster, even when you disagree with me. :)

Thanks, I usually don't disagree with you.

EEI was having a conniption over the throwing regimen of the Sox - IMO baseball pitchers might be the most brittle athletes on the planet. Still, there is nothing more overrated than middle relief pitchers. If they were reliable they would start. Get a good starter, let him pitch 6 or 7 innings, and send in the clowns for three outs at a time and hope it doesn't implode. This isn't rocket science. We have the pitching studs where they are most important and this year is going to be very fun.

They are brittle because throwing a baseball at high velocity with maximum effort with what is really a non-natural movement chain is a recipe for physical disaster. It's just the nature of the beast.

And football and hockey are not a recipe for disaster? I agree with Geo: players seem to get DL'd because of ingrown nails nowadays.
