For Smith, some are saying he should be ready by opening day. DD is holding off on announcing anything like that and hinted it might not be that close.

Smith had surgery back in late May. It's trickier for pitchers than catchers ( Vazquez for example) and I really hope they're 110% sure about him when they do bring him back.

At this point, I'd definitely rather keep Swihart than trade him.

That said, I think I'm a little more hopeful with Vaz and Leon than you are. Maybe it's just wishful thinking. But there is something about defensive oriented catchers that really floats my boat. I don't care about offense at the catching position.

I knew I liked you! ;)

Have there been any pitchers who have had successful returns from that surgery?

Chris Young. The majority of those guys (Beckett, Carpenter) never regain their control.

If a key player gets hurt in July, and we only have to pay 1/3 of an incoming player's salary, then the $9M flex space buys $27M in annual salary. That could be 2-3 quality players.

If we have to trade for a player in April, we'll probably have to use all the wiggle room we have, unless we decide to trade a top prospect or young player like Swihart for a cost controlled player.

Agreed. My original point was about having a major injury early in the season, or even during spring training.

is DD still our player personnel decision maker? is Swihart considered a prospect?

if you answered "yes" to the above questions..... dont get attached to him.......

LOL You crack me up.

I read an article yesterday about Dombrowski allowing Swihart to compete for the starting catcher job. Unless Leon or Vazquez is injured, having Swihart on the Opening Day roster would be a huge mistake, IMO. He has options. He needs to start in AAA to maintain our depth, not to mention that I think he would really benefit from some more time there.

Assuming no injuries, the only way Swihart makes the opening day roster is if we trade Leon or Vaz (doubtful). Both are out of option.

During the season, we may end up breaking away from the plan of keeping him as a catcher, if we need a LF'er or DH.

True, and even with a major early injury, we may hold off trading until the in house option has proven to be a negative. That will also (in theory) lessen amount of the prorated salary we take on.

April trades are pretty rare. Usually teams trying internal options first since they're cheaper and can be undone. ..

Not an impressive list at all. I have to agree with MVP to stay away from any pitcher that has had this surgery.

It would be nice if we could get to July before needing to make an adjustment.

Back to the thread title, my predictions

Rotation-Sale, Price, Porcello, Rodriguez, Wright

Bullpen: Kimbrel, Kelly, Thornburg, Pomeranz, Ross, Abad, Hembree

AAA Rotation depth: Elias, Owens, Johnson

AAA Bullpen depth: Barnes, Ramirez, Ysla, Scott, Martin, Workman.

Thoughts? Those of you looking to add arms, where? These are just the options already on the 40-man roster. .

I would still have Varitek on the team if it were up to me. ;)

Not wild about that idea. The guy is like 44 years old...

I'd like Elston Howard back.

Leon + Vazquez - Moses+Ryan or even Tillman + Nixon

Hope not but you never know. I don't see an equal to Fisk+Montgomery here. I really hope one of our guys hits a little. Key word is a little. My money is still on Leon.

E-rod to start in AAA and move Pom to Rotation.

Barnes replaces Pom in pen.

rotation: Porcello - Sale - Pom - Wright - Price
