I'm just realizing this, Groome had $5M deal if he fell to #24... And I know he fell significantly to us at #12. But did he, or anyone else for that matter, really think he'd have fell THAT far? I really hope he dumps his agent.

Don't take it so personally. I have little regard for any of the overpaid FO knuckleheads in MLB. Anyone with some business savy can eat their lunch.

I think you underestimate what it takes to build a successful baseball franchise.

This is how I see it. Yes, I think 3.5-4.2 mil is stupid money for someone who is 17 and never faced high end baseball talent.

I don't have any sand in my panties. I just don't like the way money is thrown around for unproven talent. The guy is not Spencer Haywood or Kevin Garnet.

I'm not jumping the gun , either. I said stand pat as in "that's what we got for you kid. Take it or leave it."

I think may be jumping the gun on calling the kid a punk. To be fair, he's 17 and is probably just following the advice of his agent and/or parents.

I was reading about that earlier, thinking the same thing. It sounds nice to have a $5M deal in place, but it was a deal that realistically was never going to happen.

I have seen firsthand what it takes to succeed in a business that has products that people don't want to buy. Baseball is a product that sells itself. All of the teams make very good money, whether they are good or bad. That is my point. I was talking about the profit aspect of the business.

He reportedly had that deal, I'm skeptical based on what they gave their #1 pick because the math doesn't work out. You have to offer your picks at least 40% of slot otherwise you risk losing the pick if they refuse to sign.

Also it wasn't completley 100% unrealistic that he would drop that far, once you drop a certain amount teams might not have the draft pool to sign you if your price tag is too high and team that has multiple picks can afford you later on.

Example: Daz Cameron was a consensus top 10 pick last year but fell all the way down to the 37th pick. Yet....he had the 4th highest bonus in the entire draft.

.@TerpsBaseball RHP Mike Shawaryn, a fifth-round pick to the @RedSox, has signed. Solid 206 season, ++ competitiveness #MLBDraft #Terps

That leaves only Dalbec and Groome, with little more than 24 hours left we should expect an announcement soon.

As reported elsewhere (first by @KendallRogersD1), Red Sox close to finalizing deal w/5th rd RHP Mike Shawaryn.

Sources still expect a deal between the Red Sox and 1st round LHP Jason Groome, though at this point no final deal in place.

Fair enough Hugh. Thanks for the example. I guess I could see if he had that deal with the team w/ the 13th pick. Then, I cld kinda get all the fuss.

The physical has derailed plenty of deals. See Aiken, Brady. It means they are close. Proving you are healthy is the final step before pen is either put to paper or the offer is rejected. Groome has to understand that $5 mil is out and $4 mil is probably the max realistic offer he can hope for

If I'm right on my prediction and Groome signs for a lot less than what people are speculating in the 3.7-3.8 range then I hope they are able to sign Quintana as well. It's easy to assume they will spend all the money they can but then again everyone thought they were going to make a run at Boldt or Sheffield in 2013 but neither signed and they left almost a million on the table.

He can take Espinoza's spot in A ball.

I'm thinking it may not be 100% coincidental that Groome is signed at about the same time the trade away Espinoza.

@jonheyman: red sox, jason groome have a deal. $3.65M pending physical.”

Looks like I was right in my prediction that he's going to sign for much less than everyone was predicting.

This is good, hopefully they can get some more talent in the system for DD to trade away. I really like Quintana, he's a good talent and it sounded like he really wanted to sign and get his pro career started.

So he waited until the day before the deadline before signing AND got a little more money out of it? Who the hell does he think he is? He should have jumped at the Sox first offering, if not offered to take less. What a douchebag.

It's not uncommon for someone in his situation to hold out, it's a business and I'm sure a 17 year old and his family are just listening to his advisor. I wouldn't hold that against him and I'm not going to call him names.

If I was in his position, I'd do the same exact thing if I thought I could get more money. He's forgoing going to college and if his arm blows up this could be his once in a lifetime chance at a big payday.

Also we don't know when the Sox even started negotiations with him.

@alexspeier Groome, Dalbec, Shawaryn all under agreement for Sox. The team still has a little $ left for possible deals w/players taken later in draft.

The Red Sox and first-round pick Jason Groome have agreed to terms on a $3.65MM signing bonus, reports Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports (via Twitter). The agreement, which is pending a physical, comes less than 24 hours before the deadline to sign 2016 draft picks.

What a punk. Holding out for $150K... Disgusting!

Ha! I'll admit, my natural defensive thinking was a little like... " f_ck this guy! Holding out, He can eat a ... Oh, he signed? Awesome!" :)

One of the great beauties of the internet and our up-to-the-second Twitterverse...we have infinitely greater opportunities to have premature conniption fits about stories that in the past we wouldn't have known about until they were done deals.
