Can some one please tell me how the Cubs power rating (by ESPN, I think) are higher than the Sox? They don't compare in any category. BA, OPS, SLG -Sox way ahead in all. Maybe they're all from the mid-west. Edited by bosoxmal

They have a better win-loss record, they're third in runs scored and fourth in OPS, while being first in ERA, sixth in K's (Sox are third) and first in batting average against. They are, for all intents and purposes, the best team in the league right now.

Well I mean the Cubs have a better record by 6 in the loss column.. Hard to argue Sox are better at this point in the season. I don't usually care for ESPN's rankings, but they are right here.

It is meaningless. Why try to explain the meaningless?

I wonder if these rankings are weighed?

As in strength of competition.

Agree, that info is not important to me.

Maybe it's useful in fantasy leagues or something.

Useless for Fantasy purposes as well.

The Cubs are in the National League. They play one stiff after another. Plus doesn't "power" mean "power"? What's ERA got to do with Powere?

Are....are you serious? This is a joke right?

It's their hockey ratings that seem to get fans up in arms. I've seen teams win 3 in a row and go down in the list. But who cares, it's ESPN, it's fluff. The only ratings that matter are in the W/L columns.

The Pirates and Cardinals are stiffs? The Giants? The Mets? The Dodgers? The Nationals? Two of the teams in the Cubs' own division are among the best in baseball, never mind the National League.

I am perfectly serious Why don't you compare BA, OPS, SLG? (Actually, there IS no comparison!)

Check the interleague play stats. There may be 6 NL teams that can even begin to compare with the AL teams. That means the Cubs, Pirates, and what-have-you are playing lousy team more than half the time.

Bottom Line: Saying the Cubs have a more powerful lineup than the RS is insane.

Going into Tuesday's games, Red Sox pitchers had surrendered 84 more runs than the Cubs pitchers had (226 to 142). The Cubs' run differential of +133 was significantly better than the +76 of the Red Sox.

The Sox are not in the Cubs' league in more than one way.

Power rankings aren't about offense. Power rankings are about the overall strength of a team based on stats and strength of schedule.

The Sox had a better run differential than the Cubs in May and are now only 4 games behind them in the standings. 'Not in the same league' is stretching things just a tad.

I just what they use as a criteria. Is it a combination of Power Pitching and Power Hitting? Dizzy Dean and Walter Johnson were “power pitchers.” Ruth, Gehrig, Foxx were “power hitters.” You knew this because you saw it. They already have too many stats; to come along with one that has no basis, and nobody knows what constutes “Power Ratings” makes no sense except to sell ad space/

The difference in competition is huge. Would the Cubs be atop the AL East if they played half their games there? I don't think so!

I can't wait for the Sox-Giants series next week in San Fran. With two other Bay Area teams in their League's Finals, and this being an even year with the Giants playing well, it's going to be amped up out there.

This makes no sense. And there's a basis for the way major networks do their poll. Some use a computer algorithm, others poll a panel of experts (ex-players, writers, SABR people) and use their analysis as the basis for rankings.

And they already have too many stats? Are you going to tell me to get off your lawn next?

Now this is a comment without any sort of basis. What method of analysis did you use to come to this conclusion?

According to my power ranking metric which is one of several KPIs I use to bet, it shows the following %s:

TOP 5.

CHC 88%

WSN 84%

KCR 76%

PIT 76%

BOS 72%

It is worth to mention that CHC has had one of the easiest strength of schedule thus far in all baseball --- SOS -0.3.

MIL, NYM and SFG are as well at -0.3 SOS

On the other hand TOR, NYY, LAA and CIN have faced the toughest SOS thus far -- +0.3.

Also, the worst teams are:

CIN 4%

ATL 4%

MIN 8%

SDP 24%

ARI 29%

COL 29%

The term "power" in "power ratings" is not meant to be a measure of actual power that hitters or pitchers have, but rather a measure of the overall strength of the team. It has little to do with just power hitters or power pitchers.

I was in SF in August 2010... Hockey offseason, yet I still saw a bunch of Sharks gear. It's their team, like it or not. Their obviously crazier in San Jose and Santa Clara, but they have a fanbase in SF as well.
