Well it was their preference to give up Buch instead of Miley in the Smith trade per a lot of speculation, so yeah, perhaps.

They could have gotten depth even if they kept Buch though.

Theoretically they could have, but they didn't. If the didn't pick up the option, they would have had to pick up someone else.

I think that they thought they had plenty of depth. Price, Porcello, Rodriguez, Buchholz & Kelly were going to be the starting 5 barring injury. It was made public that Kelly was promised that he was going to start the season in the rotation based on the end of 2015, plus he made it clear that he didn't want to pitch in relief.

They knew they had Wright, Owens, Elias & Johnson, all guys who had big league experience as starters. I doubt that there were many free agent "depth type starters" who looked at Boston as a "great opportunity."

Rodriguez gets hurt, Kelly gets hurt, Owens regresses, Elias regresses and Johnson has a mental breakdown. End of depth & a journeyman like O'Sullivan ends up making starts in May.

I think it was easy to question the "quality" of the rotation heading into the season, but it's tough to question the "quantity," in my opinion.

OK it's time for me to take a clear stand on Buchholz. No more fooling around.

I am in the group that believes categorically and unequivocally that if Clay starts pitching better, picking up the option will start looking better. And I'm not backing down on that.

Agree 100%. They will definitely pick up the option if he ends going on a run, but I also think that they'll try to move him this off season. He's a perfect "change of scenery" type guy and a lot of teams will look at his stuff and be willing to role the dice.

I also think there will be plenty of teams that think he might thrive in low pressure environment. If they released him right now, which they never would, my guess is that he would be claimed by several teams, especially when you consider the lack of starters who will be available in trade near the deadline.

Buch's heavily rumored soreness (precursor to a possible TJ injury) was probably also a factor.

Price and Buchholz....pretty much the same pitcher huh?

no. one's a righty and one's a lefty. we established this a page or two ago.

another quality start from Price. that is 3 in a row. last night looked like a solid #2 pitcher. and of course his BABIP is coming down like we all figured it would.

i generally think of "troll" as someone that is not a fan of the Red Sox. is that what is being stated here?

No, you can be a troll on a Sawx board and still be a Sawx fan.

I've watched you do it for years.

You're correct you can be a troll on your favorite teams board....but Slasher is by no means a troll. You're a troll, which is fine....it's is right to do as you please but you are. I don't believe any Sox fan would call Slasher a troll.

And it's your right to have an opinion, no matter how wrong it may be.

Personally, I like that we now have a couple of new guys that are Yankee fans on this board.

The one thing you can always say about Yankees fans who aren't Divinity is that they are generally willing to stick around even when their team is just awful. They take their lumps as well as they give them, and it keeps us from stagnating in a pool of our own smug superiority. It's like having a few Star Wars fanboys on the Trek boards or letting Somalia onto the UN Security council. You don't want to just surround yourself with people who all support the same team. It's just masturbatory navel-gazing after a while.

Well, they certainly started off awful bit I believe they have one of the best records in the AL since the first week of May.

And kind of tough to have a sense of "smug superiority " when you are a fan of a team coming off back to back last place finishes.

All small groups of online fans, from sports teams to TV shows to weird fetishes (not, uh, that I would know about those personally), have that sense. It comes from cloistering yourself in a cyberspace community with only a small group of other people who share your fandom. It's a sense of "this thing we like is the best of it's kind, no matter how bad it is compared to others. Anyone who doesn't agree clearly doesn't understand. We do, therefore we are superior to all other human beings in this regard."

Lol @ the not knowing about fetishes personally comment.

Good stuff!

If they had traded him after exercising his option, they would have had $13 million to put toward another starter.

They wouldn't have traded Clay until they acquired another starter. I'm sure they looked into acquiring one, and deemed the cost too high. Again, having Clay allowed them the luxury of not having to overpay for another starter.

Not buying that.

IMO, the Sox were not willing to part with Clay without another viable, reasonably priced pitcher available.

It is my belief that they had no better option without paying through the nose for someone.

Clay is not living up to his option as of now, but no one is going to convince me that picking up his option was not the right move. The same goes for extending Porcello.

It was reported that Seattle didn't want him...
