This is a doozie.

Ruth to the Yankees

Jamie Moyer for Darren Bragg

Dave Henderson for a pile of s***

Tris Speaker dealt to Cleveland

Freddy Sanchez and Mike Gonzalez for Suppan and Lyon

Schilling and Brady Anderson for Mike Boddicker

Lyle for Cater

Bagwell for Anderson

Lonborg and Scott for a pile of s***

The Lonborg trade wasn't that bad. We got Tommy Harper and Marty Pattin in return. Pattin was a 17 game winner for the Sox and Harper stole 50 bases.

The argument for Crawford would be that just for the mere privilege of getting rid of him, RS had to give up one of the most consistent and productive hitters ever.

Punto wasn't that consistent.

In the past 20 years it is hard to say but in Theo's/Ben's tenure you could probably find the worst.

True enough. It was quite the mixed bag. Evidence of there being too many cooks in the kitchen.

Well, if I had to choose my top 5 Red Sox players in recent history, I'd choose Pedro, Papi, Manny, Lester and Papelbon.

Certainly can't disagree and I see where you're going with that.....however, once Theo and Ben made some ballsy trades to get some REAL supporting staff then they were able to get over the hump. Doug Mientkiewicz, Foulk, Cabrera, Napoli, Victorino, Salty, Koji etc.......pretty huge moves that most said "Uhhhhhhh........what?" at the time but helped us win 3 championships.

Schilling helped a bit too.

Best thing to do with that guy's name is spell it like it sounds: Mint Cave Itch.

I went to the trouble of mastering the spelling of Mientkiewicz's name back when we had him, just because. I didn't want to be one of the plebs calling him Minty or Minky.

Depends on the definition of "recent" ... I'd have a hard time putting Lester and Papelbon above Pedroia, Nomar, Varitek or Yook ... and you could actually make solid case for Derek Lowe > Papelbon too.

Nothing wrong with that trade. Boddicker was very effective with Boston, going 39-22 with an ERA of around 3.50 and helping the Sox to 2 division titles.

Schilling didn't even become a full time starting pitcher until 1993 (5 years after the trade), and Anderson was a decent outfielder, but other than 1 over the top year, was hardly a diffeence maker.

One trade (1966) that I haven't seen mentioned was Don Demeter for Earl Wilson. Wilson went 22-11 in '67 for the Tigers and won 60 games in less than four years in Detroit. Demeter was out of baseball the following year.

oh yeah, I'm not arguing that, actually both and LL certainly put their 2 cents for our success in recent history, but they are also very gone because their results were not good in their last years of their tenure ... but since the thread is "Worst free agent/trade in Sox History" I began with my post #33.

Well I tried to go to every staff.

My 2 fav hitters are Papi and Manny.

My 2 fav SP are Pedro and Lester

... and my fav reliever is actually the best we have had. Papelbon.

Yeah I like Pedroia, Nomar, Tek, Youk, etc. We have had great players in recent history but If I had to choose only five, I would take those I mentioned.

My top? David Ortiz.

Wily Mo Pena for Bronson Arroyo. Arroyo pitched pretty consistently for a few years after that, I would have much rather kept him in the rotation than have the strikeout machine that was Pena. Wily Mo could hit some seriously long home runs, but there were way too many outs in between them.

I don't think it was one of the worst, but this one still ticks me off on principle.

1. Babe Ruth

2. Bagwell for Anderson

There were some other doozies, but I would have to agree with this.

i 100% believe this article on the subject:

http://espn.go.com/espn/eticket/story?page=manny

Terrible article written by an admitted fanboy homer.

Twice in the article it tries to blame Boras yet at the same time admitting that the sox were dealing with Manny's behavior for years before he even had Boras as an agent.

Then the topper - "Manny played 135-145 games every season, remained exceedingly durable into his mid-30s and didn't cheat like numerous other sluggers did."

Too funny!!

He was never caught for PED's until after he left Boston and was in the twilight years looking for that one last payout. Am I surprised he tried that in his last couple seasons no. Does that mean anything about the rest of his career also no. I do think his name was on the 2003 list alongside a lot of other players for which no other evidence existed that they ever cheated.

For the record, I find it hillarious that a Yankee fan has the stones to call out anyone else's stars for PED abuse.

I'm not calling anyone out, just found that statement a little ridiculous.

And if you are naive enough to believe that he didn't start using until after he left beantowne then I have a bridge to sell you.

Everyone was cheating in the early 00's. Trying to pick nits about who was and was not is just biased conjecture.

I'm not saying every player, but every team certainly had some cheaters.

Since we'll never truly know how many exact players were cheating, they are ALL under suspicion to me. It's time to move on from the PED inquisition from 10 years ago...
