Seriously folks, it is just way too early to be arguing about where E-Rod starts the season. :D

It passes the time. What else is there to talk about? :)

I really don't think that that is what the arguement (conversation) is really all about. I think that it really is about who of those 3 gives us the best chance to win games on a regular basis. In my mind, it is very clearly E-Rod. Considering that, IMO - It would be absolute stupidity to send him to AAA to start the season.

I agree with you that Rodriguez deserves to be in the rotation to start the season.

That said, what if Buchholz and Kelly are absolutely lights out in spring training and Rodriguez struggles, for whatever reason? Do you still start Rodriguez over the other two? Yes, I understand that spring training doesn't necessarily mean anything, but is it possible if Rodriguez is struggling, the team might be better off with the other two in the rotation while Rodriguez gets his timing back or whatever?

Kelly and Miley also have options. One of them could very well be starting the season in AAA.

I think that that is a good question. I really believe that you go with your 5 (probably 5) best coming out of the spring. Now, if they all look about the same, Rodriguez would get the nod from me. Youth be served. All that being said, if Rodriguez isn't in that top 5, my guess is that we will be in for a very long year once again. I think professional sports would be better all around if more emphasis was placed on actual performance as opposed contract, contract, length, and potential. I hope very much that both Buccholz and Kelly come into the spring healthy and strong. I also don't think that it will affect Rodriguez's status.

Seems like we had more to talk about last year at this time.

I'm probably the minority here, but I think Kelly would be a great piece to add on the back end of the pen. On the other hand, if our starters don't keep us in the game it doesn't matter regardless. It would be nice to get our ace plus another mid rotatation guy. Then find a taker on Miley.

Why would they want to trade Miley? He provides consistent innings. He's inconsistent, but eating innings is a valuable skill in and of its own.

Miley is the kind of mid rotation pitcher everyone wants and needs. You don't move a guy like Miley unless someone wants him real bad. As in big time overpay bad.

Like I mentioned in the other thread. I don't have anything against him and won't be upset if we don't move him. I just think we have to many middle of the rotation guys and if we get a 2nd pitcher along with our ace then he would have the most value. I obviously wouldn't want to give up E-Rod because he has a lot of potential. Owens although young and unproven should be a good low cost mid/ back rotation arm for awhile.

Last year this time the Sox had just signed Hanley and Pablo. I'm sure there was plenty to talk about.

I know - my attempt at being a wise ass. I really remember it. The sparks were flying. I think that things will heat up soon again. I'm sure that you saw the same article that I did talking about who our two biggest improvements are going to be this year. Pablo and Hanley.

If both Handley and Fatboy would play up to their potential ( career norms to best ) this team would be very different.

I do not see that happening. Some see this as very likely to happen. I see it as wishful thinking.

They are who they are at this point.

Hanley was used improperly. I think he could be a good DH. Who knows what he can bring at 1b, but it is at least a reasonable thing to expect rather than a conversion to Fenway's LF.

Panda is probably done. His bat looked slow, his legs looked slow and his glove was made of stone. I think you ran into fatassitis. It eventually sneaks up on all overweight professional athletes.

That's probably the reason why Chapman has not been traded yet. Just because the Reds' price is even more steep than what we paid for Kimbrel, that doesn't make Kimbrel's price less of an overpay.

That said, we will see how the market plays out for the rest of the closer type relievers. If guys like Chapman or Miller are traded for returns comparable to Kimbrel's trade, then perhaps Dombrowksi judged the market correctly.

That said, we will also need to see how the market plays out for trades on young pitchers. If, for example, Gray is traded for a package that we could have easily swung using some of the prospects traded for Kimbrel, then perhaps Dombrowski would have been better off being more patient.

That is why Sox walked away from Chapman. Plus Chapman would walk after a year.
