It's debatable how "sizable" that effect is.

Seriously, you haven't noticed a huge difference in our outfield defense over the last month?

Hanley's negative impact is quantified in his defensive ratings, which I believe are the worst of any outfielder in baseball this year.

Yes, I've noticed.

How many runs saved and/or wins is it actually good for?

Hanley's final fWAR for 2015 is -1.8. An average player's fWAR is about +2. So Hanley cost us roughly 4 games compared to an average player. And he only played about 2/3 of the season.

What a life!!! Imagine sucking at your job for 4-5 months then being told that you don't have to come to work at all. Just go play in the sand and Sun. Our treat.

I hope he never comes back.

He did for us about what he has done for most of his career. Play a little - hit a little - field a very little - get hurt a lot.

He is gone.

The worst Red Sox FA signing that I can remember by any GM.

Quite possible, yes. Though.....Carl Crawford, my friend.

The first month into the year, Hanley put up this line: .293/.341/.659/.999, 10 hr, 22 rbi. He was absolutely destroying the baseball. Then he got hurt and his season went downhill after that. Who knows what he would have done had he not gotten hurt. I'm not arguing it was a good signing. I'm just saying that in the month of April, we saw his fielding deficiencies, but holy smokes was he raking.

And a guy who has the ability to hit like that, if he played a better fielding position or, better yet, was a DH, is a pretty nice piece to have.

So, roughly a win per month.

Pretty bad. But still not enough to sway a team's record that much.

Someone should've told Kelly he had no business winning 4 of his 6straight games in August, because, you know, Hanley was playing.

if they can unload him like Crawford got unloaded, the Crawford signing would probably win the boobie prize.

When you say "Hanley's negative impact" are you talking about his glove or his head?

Lightning doesn't strike twice....unless there really is another dipshit GM out there. They were lucky enough with the Gonzalez deal, and I hoped they turned the corner on bad signings. Guess they didn't learn the lesson after all.

I told the whole board Hanley in LF would be a mistake before the contract ink had even dried.
oh? I don't think that I gave you much of an argument on that. I never understood the deal after having signed Pablo.

To unload him like Crawford, they'd need to add in a top-shelf player like Adrian Gonzalez. That was what the Sox had to eat in order to get rid of Crawford. Do they have such a player? Not really, not at this point. But they absolutely could get rid of Hanley if they packaged him with, say, Owens, or Devers, or Margot. Someone would definitely take Hanley on to snag someone like that. The return wouldn't be much, but still. Could easily be done. Just a matter of how big a bullet the Sox are willing to bite to get rid of him.

DiPoto's tenure with the Red Sox will not vest him in a pension. He took the Mariners GM job. Ben remains unemployed. I mean " on vacation"

Ben turned down the opportunity to interview with the Mariners. It's not like there aren't any teams who are interested in him.

Of course those who know more than you or I on this board will tell you that he will definitely be much more productive next season because he has had good numbers in the past.

I think the guy is a lump and should be jettisoned at great cost. Just get him out of here.

And I do not believe for one f***ing minute that Dombrowski is seriously considering playing the bum at 1st next season. If he does he is a stupid team builder. I will not have anything nice to say about him thereafter.

Poor Hanley is so misunderstood. And IMO, false accused of not wanting to play 1B.

No one said that he will definitely be much more productive next season, but there is a very good chance that he will be.

I get that no one wants him back next season. He is being paid a lot of money for negative production, plus the team has played so much better recently without him. However, I don't think that he deserves all the vitriol that is being spewed his way.

I didn't read that anywhere. He should have taken the interviuew. A prolonged family vacation is not a good idea.

I don't understand your defense of this stiff. He did NOTHING to earn his pay, let alone justify his enormous contract.

Word around Boston is that he just quit on the team when Dombrowski pulled him out of left. No one knows anything about this phantom right shoulder injury. Sounds like Hanley has had a Good for Hanley year as he has in the past. Make up an injury and quit.

Why the Sox would want him back under any circumstances is beyond me.

There is absolutely no reason to expect that he will "turn it around" next season if with the Sox. None.

Hanley was hurt all year after the wall crash. April was the real Hanley hitting.

We already have a DH.............. he's not needed.........

Hanley stated he wanted to come back and play first this year............ the FO shut him down................. thank goodness...

I blame Hanley for being a POS this year......... and sucking and not working hard and being lazy and thinking he's too cool to play defense.......... and for having had to watch his helmet fall off all the time and him strut around and take his time to pick it up..............

but I think there is some character assassination going on here.

And I dislike Hanley's game more than anyone on this board.............

I blame the FO for signing him and Dumpy. Gross and unnecessary signings. We all wanted a top of the rotation guy and they blew their wad on two turds.

I am not defending Hanley's play or whether he was worth his contract. He was terrible this year.

I am defending all of the unfounded accusations that he refused to play first base, that he was a cancer, that he faked injuries, that he quit on the team, etc. Criticize his play all you want. The criticism on his character this past year is nothing more than speculation, based on people's interpretation when "reading between the lines".

he was taking BP a couple of weeks ago pain free sending balls into the stands regularly. Team reports were that his shoulder was not impairing his throwing. Team reported that despite pain free shoulder he would not play first base in a game until he had a comfort level with playing first base. No conjecture. All team reports. Then he gets shut down and sent home to rehab his shoulder without any report of further injury. Buch and others are rehabbing with the team. There is no need to read between the lines. None of this is conjecture.

Thank you.

I was thinking that my proximity to Boston was allowing me to hear and read info that other members do not get because they live in other areas. I'm still not sure.

But some members do not get the same info or just ignore it as being noise.

As for speculation about Hanley. The fact that there appears to be speculation is a problem by itself. The mystery surrounding his alleged injury , playing 1st base, hitting bombs in BP pain free, and then asking to be able to go home to Florida does not lend itself to good "optics".

Hanley looks bad any way you slice it. And based on his "past history" ( lol, is there any other kind of history? ) believing the worst about the f***ing stiff is not exactly a stretch.

He had a really good opportunity coming back to Boston and he f***ing blew it. There is no one else to blame for his failure. None of us should be surprised he did not work out here.

There is no character assassination of Hanley that I am seeing. What I am seeing based on team reports is a guy who is self-inflicting wounds.

Where did you hear he asked to go home instead of stay with the team.

I've seen only articles of him saying he is ok and wants to be back playing and wanted to take a shot at playing first. If anything what I've read it looks like he is fine, but the FO doesn't want him at first and shut him down. I haven't seen anything saying he wont play first or wont until he feels comfortable playing the position.

I think the FO just shut him down and doesn't want any part of him at first. I don't think they ever did. They had chances to before he was "hurt".

The FO wants him gone IMO.

Maybe you are getting other info than I am, but I have been looking all year for a smoking gun on Hanley to show that he is not just lazy on the field and that he is a bad clubhouse guy. And I just haven't seen it. I haven't seen anything to that said he went above and beyond to improve, but nothing I've seen said he quit or wont play.
