I wonder if Padres would do Shields for Panda and Miley (doubt it). With a not-top prospect included? With some cash included?. Hanley is probably capable of playing 3rd as bad as Panda. Shaw was also working at 3B at the end of last year (don't know how it went). Hanley and Shaw at the corners with Holt sprinkled in. Rotation of Price/Shields/Buchholz/ERod/Porcello with Kelly in pen as backup SP. Looks pretty damn good to me. Hopefully Dumbrowski is on the phone.

Dumbrowski seems to be doing all the GMing, so what's the actual GM doing? Cant even remember who it is because he's never mentioned.

Every other part of the GM position that does not involve maneuvering the major league roster.

Well that's generally what is considered the most important part of the GM job, which is why I asked (mostly facetiously).

Also just realized after seeing so many haters calling Dombrowski Dumbrowski, I did the same thing, lol. Not intended at all. I'm liking Dombrowski way better than Cherington so far. It does help that the Sox don't seem to have a spending limit anymore.

I don't think that they have had a spending limit. they just have some one who wants to spend it in a different way. i like his way.

They laid out for the top name in the FA market - to be fair, they did that last year and in 2010 ... fortunately Price seems like a better bet. "Hey! Let's try to lure David Price with lots and lots of money" is not necessarily something that would differentiate a GM - compared to say differentiating ownership

Well, I was wrong. I thought there was no way they blew him out of the water to get him but they did. I can't be disappointed as they got their ace.

That said, I don't love the deal. I will be happy to watch him over the next few years and if the Sox FO continues to just open the purse for whatever players are needed then it wont' be a problem. But if they go back to their "find value" approach in the next few years I can imagine them NOT making deals that many of us want them to make because of deals like this one. Oh well, hopefully it will pay off in the short term.

Additionally, I've just never felt like Price is an intimidating #1 compared to some of the other ones out there. I'm not batting against him so that is easy for me to say(!), but when the Sox have faced him I've never felt like he was a lock to shut them down. Similarily when he's started playoff games I've never felt like the other team will have their work cut out for them if they want to get a win. I bet this is as much a perception issue as it is a reality issue, I will own that, but it's just how I've felt. A guy like Scherzer has periods of absolute dominance. Price may be steadier. His numbers are outstanding, as is his consistency, and his pedigree (#1 draft pick, 200+ IP every year, etc.,).

What would really make my day is if the Sox turn around and trade some of their talent for another really quality SP. THAT would make the offseason for me. I'm surprised they finished this deal so quickly and, frankly, very, very impressed.

The Braves are said to be shopping Shelby Miller. He would be a good addition.

Interesting. What do you think it would take? I don't know much about him and haven't watched much, but his numbers and age are attractive. Even if his ERA isn't totally supported by his FIP, WHIP or Ks.

Dombrowski did a great job when he got Anibel Sanchez, who was a really good pitcher for a few years. This could be a similar pick up. I wouldn't be shocked if he pulled the trigger, overpaid in prospects and added Miller. Like Owens, Barnes and Devers or something? That would be a lot to give up, but Miller is in that pre-prime age range that I hope the Sox are aiming for. While I wouldn't usually include guys like Owens and Devers, if they disappeared and the Sox had a potentially dominant mid-20s arm to go with Price (now) and kept the rest of their best young players to move forward, I wouldn't be upset.

The Braves either want Soler or Pollock. The sox would have to offer something comparable or better in outfielders.

Be wary of Miller. St Louis couldn't fix his mechanics and kept dropping him from playoff rotations and all of a sudden he goes to Atlanta and reemerges as an ace level pitcher. Atlanta always seems to reclaim pitchers and then when they sell them off again, they suck

Well, he's pretty much dominated in the AL East over the years. His .647 winning percentage against the Sox is the lowest against AL East teams - 6.50 vs Yankees, .667 vs Orioles and .889 vs Jays. And I don't recall the Ray as having crazy-good bullpens all those years - certainly not KC-like.

If DD was prepared to give up a package of Owens, Barnes, & Devers I would hope he would look to St Louis and land Michael Wacha instead of Shelby Miller. If you are gonna move prospects shoot for the moon.

Why would St Louis deal Wacha for a lesser SP, a reliever, and a guy who isn't close to being MLB ready? They're coming off a 100-win season. Thats' a terrible trade proposal.

Because fans never make serious trade suggestions.

Shelby Miller could be great, but I wonder why two teams have put him on the block in the last year.

The Cards landed an elite corner outfielder for him and have pitching depth for days. I think it was just resource usage for them.

The Braves have a rotten local TV deal and were awful last year. I suspect they think their rebuild might last longer. A young good starter could net them a bit more. Why did the Braves deal the best defensive SS in the league on a fairly solid deal? Weird goings on there.

I agree I was just saying that if DD were to move 3 decent/good prospects I would look to a guy like Wacha. I just don't see Miller being that much better of a pitcher than the up and coming guys we have on the farm.

I would rather sign a guy like Lackey on a one year deal with an mutual option for a second.

If a deal for Sheilds involving Panda close to straight up would be a bad for bad contract to get us another upper tier pitcher. Move Hanley to 3rd/DH on Papi off days. Let Shaw play 1st.

It wouldn't surprise me if Hanley is moved within the next couple weeks. And then the Sox make a run at Davis. But that is a pipe dream. It's just been a good offseason so far and I can't wait for opening day.

Also is any news that Joe Kelly is willing to move to the bullpen? I think he could become another Wade Davis for us if he would be willing to move.

I'm not sure he's earned the right to decide where he pitches....! But personally, based on his 2H last year, where he went 8-1 with a 3.77 ERA, I'd rather see him start the year in the rotation, see if he can continue in that fashion.

Posted
Probably won't see any more pitchers unless one comes in a trade. Then again they are somewhat in a position to deal from their pitching now as well.

Curt Schilling thinks that the Sox might still try to sign Greinke to get that deadly 1-2 punch. Is he crazy?

Posted
Buchholz, E-Rod, Miley, Kelly, Porcello, Owens. I would expect maybe one of them gets moved as well as an outfielder at this point.

Personally, I wouldn't trade any of our pitching unless we are blown away. Keep the depth.

No #2 then.

Lots of time yet. Lots of things could happen.

As of now, the plan is to keep Kelly as a starter.

Price is a much better bet. I agree. Cherington is a good man and did well at what he does best. I am all for giving him credit but Dumbrowski's experience factor alone is worth a great deal. The right person at the right time. i can't believe that what he has done since he has been with the team is anywhere as easy as some suggest it is. We have needed someone like him for a while now. Good for him and great for us!

Throwing the most money or the most prospects at a player is not that difficult to do. I could do that.

Building the best farm system in baseball and winning a world series in the process - now we're talking. Theo and Ben only managed to win 3 World Series with their philosophy of building a franchise.

I got nothing. Theo and Ben all the way. How did we ever get stuck with this Dumbrowski guy? We don't even need a GM. done here - nothing to say - stunned to silence. Good job.

Theo and Ben also threw tons of money at players. In a period of months Ben spent over $400 million on new contracts.
