It was always a mystery how much power Lucchino had in baseball related decisions. If the Sox didn't win in 2013 I think anyone who replaces him would probably can BC and Farrell and bring in his own people. Before the next rebuild begins this question needs to be answered.

Lots of teams have FO openings at high levels-- Red Sox, Tigers, and Angels.

Angels opening will be interesting - like the Red Sox there are some "power structure" questions. Basically the GM is stuck with Scioscia.

Red Sox have some questions to answer on that front obviously - but they never cheaped out on that stuff, and there is a substantial network of guys with both experience and Red Sox experience, which are both valuable.

As Abraham concludes, Cherington hasn’t been the sole driving force behind the acquisitions of Joe Kelly, Rick Porcello and Justin Masterson, and the team has had poor results in developing pitching despite selecting five arms in the first round from 2008-12.
no blame for Lucchino on these moves

To be honest, Porcello, Kelly, and Masterson sound like Cherington moves to me. The Sandoval signing has Lucchino written all over it. All speculation, of course.

Sandoval is more a Werner move then Lucchino. Werner goes for the PR moves. Like I said the Red Sox were seduced by Sandoval's playoff performance that smacks of PR and that is Werner.

Sandoval's marketability as 'Panda' would also have a lot of appeal to Werner.

I'm not buying that the Sox were seduced by his playoff numbers, but if they were, and that's a big if, it was Lucchino and/or Werner that was seduced by them, not Ben.

Sandoval was a big fan favorite in SF, and not just because of his playoff numbers. His likeability, his jovial personality, and the Panda image made him a very marketable player.

Not to repeat our previous discussion, I know you are so committed to Ben that you are actually saying he is stronger emotionally than a Larry Lucchino. I find that most amusing.

Obviously that isn't the case here. If he was so likable why did he diss his Giants teammates when he left?

What is all this about Panda's marketability? What payment streams could the Red Sox tap with regard to Panda that wouldn't have to be shared with the other 29 baseball teams under the licensing agreement? We don't need him to sell tickets. The place is always filled.

No, I just think that being a baseball ops person as opposed to being a business man, he knows better.

Pablo was wrong to diss his teammates and former management. I did not agree with that at all. As far as him being likeable, I was speaking from the fans' standpoint.

They only share a % of their local revenue with other teams. The basic amount is 34%. Then there's some sort of supplemental thing which is impossible to explain. But the bottom line is they still keep most of the money for Panda merchandise sold at Fenway.

If Ben knows better why has he put together such rotten teams. Even Ben said he was the one who recommended these signings to ownership.

Sandoval was a much better regular season player with San Fran than he has been with us. He wasn't just a total stiff in the regular season who turned into Babe Ruth in the playoffs.

If it were just Sandoval, I'd give Ben a bit of a pass but it has been a whole host of dumb baseball moves both of omission and commission going back several years.

This is the way I see it as well. While everyone applauded Ben for cleaning the books of bad contracts (and sacrificing A Gonzales in the process) it would have been kind of nice if any of the players acquired turned out to be good players in Red Sox uniforms. No I see Ben as a huge problem here and I hope they find a better option because this suck.

I thought that anything licensed by MLB got shared equally by the other teams.

I thought under the mlb licensing agreement that revenue from mlb licensed merchandise gets shared equally.

IIRC stuff sold at mlb.com and third parties is split evenly, anything sold directly by the club they keep 100% of (team store).

Isn't most of the merchandise at Fenway sold across the street at the Twin Enterprise store? Are they a third party. I don't see a big potential for Panda merchandise sold at fenway. I didn't notice too many people at Fenway with Panda paraphernalia.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2013-10-23/yankees-among-10-mlb-teams-valued-at-more-than-1-billion

From this Bloomberg article:

Revenue from national TV contracts and merchandise is split evenly among the teams, as is the value of MLB Advanced Media, a subsidiary that supplies content to Internet and mobile subscribers.

But what about 'local' revenues - let's say all Red Sox merchandise sold in the city of Boston.

What I read is that only 34% of 'net local revenue' goes to the revenue-sharing program.

Not if it carries the mlb licensed logo . That is split evenly.

The Panda move was catastrophic imo. He's terrible and impacted both his and the Hanley signing.

Absolutely. He can't even be an average hitter.
