Without adding pitching, imo they are at best a 4th place team. They don't have enough pitching to win consistently and the hitting will likely have another slump in mid August in the dog days. Pitching will have to win games then and we don't have enough. I do agree with you that we need to add top line pitching for next season, so why not add it now and give this team a shot.

If the team plays well between now and the deadline, I am confident that the FO will add some pitching. I think what happens in the Yankees series could be huge if there is a sweep either way.

I don't want the Sox to empty the farm, especially for a 2 month rental. That said, the price of good starting pitchers was not that high last deadline. I think we have enough pieces to get a good pitcher at a reasonable price.

Hernandez+Margot+one of (Johnson-Wright-Barnes-Owens) = 1 good starting pitcher possibly. Agree?Disagree? i feel like I am beating a dead horse.

Who keeps talking up Hernandez? He's a non prospect and won't be a key piece in any deal, as far as I know. Wright won't be traded because knuckleballers are complicated, but most teams would be happy to have any of the other guys as a headliner for a deal.

How many last place finishes will it take for us to realize that there wasn't a lot of crops on our farm?

well 3 or 4 starters ain't nothin ....

I do - and you are wrong. Never said he was key piece but a possible piece.

I don't want the Sox to empty the farm - that said there is depth at SS and Margot is blocked too. So there is tradeable surplus and it's why you have them.

sk - You write as though you might know something about what is going on in our farm system. Why do I find it unbelievable that people who certainly sound like they know something have never heard of Hernandez? He is having as good a year as any player at any level. A 22 year old getting no love. Sad.

Make any trade you want, just don't dare take Clay! His contract is only 13M! Who cares if he can only go 20 games a year! Edited by mvp 78

Because he's a fringe prospect having a decent luck-fueled half season. The scouting reports tab him as below-average to average in every offensive category.

Moot point on him getting traded now.

The question now becomes whether the Sox want to pick up his option for next year or not.

I say yes.

Even if he needs TJS?

No, not if he needs surgery. If he need TJS, he'll be out the entire season.

Yes, provided that he is healthy and able to pitch next season. I understand that he is fragile and inconsistent, but for $13 million, he's worth the risk, even if he can only give us half a season. To date, he's been worth 3.1 WAR, which is worth well more than $13 mil.

I agree with you 100 percent. Look at Sean Coyle from last year. He was hitting in the mid 300's for a good part of the year last year in double a and can't do squat now. Even Garin Cecchinni raked in double a and has now fallen off a cliff. And they were graded higher than marco hernandez. There's no way any team could see him as frontline prospect in any deal the sox try to make.

It's all about people's opinions. I'm pretty comfortable with mine. Based on the performances of all of the young players in our farm system, I would say that we are just loaded up fine with lots of fringe prospects. I just happen to like the guys who are playing the best.

But other teams won't give a f***, which is why your initial premise was faulty. You called sk out on not mentioning Hernandez because you see that he's doing well this year. I am telling you that means jack squat. Your opinion is your opinion, but it certainly doesn't affect the way the league views this kid.

Jack squat. Good one. I don't call people out. I asked SK a question. I'm pretty sure he at least has heard of Hernandez. The only point I was trying to make was that I find it interesting that so few people who claim to know so much have no clue as to who the player is who is quite possibly playing the best baseball of anyone in our minor league system. You can bitch all you want to about that one but it is a fact.

People don't know about him because IT'S HIS FIRST YEAR IN THIS SYSTEM AND RANKED ONLY 42ND BEST PROSPECT IN SAID SYSTEM. I can't fault anyone for not knowing the garbage that lies past our top prospects. It's not worth the time and effort.

Nice caps by the way- I get your point. My opinion is my own and yours is someone elses.

I'm not little. Quite the opposite. I'll take that as a compliment actually.

Ok - I will concede - big friend ? You should take it as a compliment. You are without question the best "chummer" of waters "stirrer" of pots on this board. You provide a source of entertainment that allows me to waste all of this time on the computer. It's a good thing that I am retired. You humor me almost as much as all of my pain in the ass friends do up here on a daily basis.

Betts/Bogaerts/Vazquez?
they have been good enough to get us last place last year and they are making a nice run to repeat. That's a future that might have been worth sacrificing.

I'll take that as a compliment too. It's what I'm here for.

I can't believe you're even serious with this comment.

Semi serious. When I hear about sacrificing the future, I expect the future to be better than last place finishes in back to back years. Big market big payroll teams like the Red Sox should be able to work in new players without finishing last.

True, but they aren't losing because of the young guys. They are losing because of overpaid vets like Napoli, Porcello, Victorino, Craig, Sandoval, Ramirez, Buchholz, Breslow, etc.
