They build a farm system of position player prospects and then blocked them with dumb moves. Devers is a 3b, but now you have Panda. Margot is a CF, but they spent $72 mil on Castillo to play there (at the time).

Ben made a pile of trades that won the Red Sox a championship. He has built a farm system referred to by some experts as the best in the majors. He's also made some terrible moves lately.

I buy into the big picture of the team's current strategy. They're building a core of young players, and not trading away any top talent. They need an ace, but they know, and I think they're going to get one.

Pal, I'm afraid last night's game was like Exhibit A of why Ben is on thin ice. Joe Kelly followed by one inept reliever after another. Yikes.

They have an excellent bullpen, another thing we don't.

Indeed - but it does flip a trope that is popular round these parts ... if one part is weak you fix it with a strong part

So f***ing glad he's gone. Who's the bag of baseballs we got in return?

Basically nothing but the chance to dump salary - but that's fine ... he was not going to command much more

Not an issue - if the prospects are what they could be, they will find a home in Boston or somewhere else. The org does not block anybody - the kids do that.

Heres to Victorino - He was great for us and we were great for him. Sorry to see him leave but it was inevitable. Now -, if it was a "salary dump", it looks like we got screwed again. As for what we got in return, we would have been just as well off letting him finish his contract year on the bench or playing every third day. We have lots of guys who are already filling the role of utility player. We don't need anymore.

Victorino was moved so Castillo could be brought up.

Why is that so hard to figure out?

Good luck Shane.

No one said that that was hard to figure out. A fairly obvious move. Like I said - thanks go out to Victorino for the years he gave us.

It's a shame that Red Sox fans didn't get to see a healthy Victorino. The guy can play. I saw a lot of him with the Phillies as I live in NY and go to and watch a lot of Mets games. He drove Mets fans crazy. You couldn't hit the gaps when he played CF, and he played shallow but you couldn't get anything over his head. Great speed and unbelievable instincts. He broke so fast on balls and never broke the wrong way. With the bat, he mauled left handed pitching, and came up big in many key spots. I won't call him clutch, but I will call him fierce and fearless.

He is the OF version of Dustin Pedroia -- a little guy with a chip on his shoulder who is really good at everything. Of course, it has become the fashion by some to despise Pedroia. I just don't get that.

Captain Obvious can always read minds incorrectly.

Then why all the hand-wringing about getting "screwed"?

If you're going to bring Castillo up, Victorino can't play "every third day".

Castillo should be out there every day. Now, he can be.

Isn't this where you whine about having to read my posts, Candyass?

Victorino had an MVP-caliber season in 2013 (ok, MVP caliber if you pretend Mike Trout did not exist). Injuries and age held up the rest of it, but the contract was a net win by any valuaton, and when you consider the flag that flies forever, it was even better than that.

There really was zero reason to get Rutledge. It would have been better if we got a PTBNL. There's no place for Rutledge and with Pedroia down and Holt a little banged up, give Weeks a look. He hustles and has some tools. He made a very nice play last night, so it looks like he has worked on improving his D from what I remember of him.

Happy with the Rutledge acquisition, the more solid multi position infielders the better. This allows us to keep Holt somewhere permanently if we need to with Rutledge to take the bench position.

Seeing as they brought up Castillo, Rutledge will be in Pawtucket.

Okay, keep it until he gets fired, which he will.

For the clueless among us, Rutledge will take Weeks spot in AAA.

There not enough to bitch about, so we need to bitch about a minor trade.

Amazing....

Good to know - I was concerned about who was going to be replacing Weeks. When you have one of the top ranked farm systems in the game, can't afford to let things slip.

Asking a question is now defined as bitching. What an *******.

Bitching about other people bitching who are not actually bitching is frequently around here.

Well, I think that's kind of the point. You can win with a mediocre rotation, if you are strong enough in other areas to overcome that. We ended up stinking in all areas, but the offense and defense were supposed to be good enough to carry the mediocre staff.

Our staff is not mediocre. By every measure, it stinks.

I love watching Victorino play. It's too bad that he couldn't stay healthy for us, but I have no regrets about his signing. I thank him for 2013 and wish him the best of luck in LA.

Until a player is languishing in AAA, they're not actually blocked.

One aspect of building a strong farm system that is often overlooked is the trade aspect. You don't build the farm thinking that every prospect will play for your team, or that your team will consist of nothing but farm players. You draft the best players available, then you trade from your areas of strength.

If someone is "blocked", trade him to get pitching.
