Well, after the way Rodriguez pitched last night, someone is going to have to be bounced from the rotation to give him more starts. Pretty impressive against a tough line-up that's been playing well lately. Doesn't seem like he has electric stuff but boy, was he locating last night.... And I'm sure Swihart having some familiarity didn't hurt either.

He's a lefty that can consistently hit the mid-90's. That qualifies as electric.

Kelly is going to get at least another start or two. Rodriguez will be sent back to AAA until after the break, because, as sk7326 stated in another thread, it's much easier to manage his innings there.

And his innings DO have to be managed, in spite of what's happening with the Sox rotation.

He was very impressive last night. If Wright pitches well tonight, Kelly will have to get a set of bullpen spoons and start practicing his musical talent.

I don't know how they send him down now. He is currently their best pitcher. ;) I do think they will keep running Kelly out there. Sounds like they are going to go with 6 pitchers for a bit, which will manage ALL of their innings....

Some 6-man rotation, maybe give Johnson or Owens a turn.

I thought his changeup was far more advanced than his slider. His FB was impressive, low to mid 90s, hitting all corners. His slider was basically used as an out pitch, but he couldn't seem to locate it in the zone (on second thought, he likely didn't NEED to locate it in the zone). His capability to throw the change on the outside to righties was solid. That changeup is DIRTY. He's got the stuff to be a Lester type pitcher. It will likely take a couple years to gain the consistency to reach his potential, but that potential is real Edited by jacksonianmarch

Also, he had everything last night, from what I have read/ Slider sweeping out of the zone (didn't seem to try and keep it in the zone), changeup darting down and command of the FB to all 4 quadrants. Mike Mussina used to say that if you make 32 starts on a season, you'll have 8 starts where everything is working, 8 starts where nothing is working and 16 starts where something is working. When everything is working, it doesn't matter how you pitch, you're gonna be fine. When nothing is working, you have to really pitch incredibly in terms of smarts and location to avoid getting shelled. It is what you do with the 16 shifts where not everything is working, but some things are that you make your hay. ERod had a start from his front 8 last night.

Yes, and there will certainly be tape on him now as well, for hitters to study. The ability to make adjustments going forward is really critical and I think where a lot of young pitchers fail. Going back to the subject of this thread, I don't think Kelly has gotten that yet. He seems to be focused on throwing what he wants, not what might get the hitter out.

The Red Sox may well have to make some tough decisions and one of them might be to send Kelly to the bullpen eventually. Could be a good move for everyone if Kelly embraced it from an ego standpoint. I would like to see them get Barnes back into a possible starters role again as well. With respect to Rodriguez, yes he probably will have growing pains but lets see - lefty, throws strikes, has 3 solid pitches, is capable of a 95+ fastball, and if buccholtz and Kelly stood shoulder to shoulder they could wear this kid's jersey. Not to mention the excitement factor he brings to the team. I wouldn't want to be the one who decides to send him back too soon. He might very well need to go back back certainly not yet.

You know the ironic thing is that Kelly's peripheral stats aren't really all that bad, in fact many of them are significantly improved over the prior season. His WHIP isn't great but isn't that bad, his walk rate is average, his hit rate is high but not incredibly high, his strikeouts are not great but good leading to a healthy 2-1 k/bb rate. The big problem has been the home run ball, which is a a career high rate for him right now. if he was able to keep the ball down a bit more he'd return to his normal stats pretty fast.

Yeah. He has taken a break from riding his moped.

Yeah, reminds me of that joke about what do Spudboy and fat chicks have in common...they're fun to ride until one of your friends sees you doing it...

Rodriguez is getting the start on Wednesday. The Sox will stay with a 6 man rotation through one more turn.

After that, who knows? Farrell is not a fan of the 6 man rotation.

Everyone made fun of Ramblers. As a kid, I never understood why until a geek grad student of my Father came to visit.

Kelly - pen - now! I know the Cy Young is hard to win from there.

At this point, he hasn't shown enough to stick in the rotation. I guess the FO still is waiting on his upside to come around? I'd just transition him to the bullpen.

IF he would make the move peacefully to the bullpen, I

think that he could be a big difference maker.
