I don't think you understand the point. The Sox have shown a willingness to overpay players to shorten the length of their deals. And if healthy, Lee is a better pitcher than Shields, and that's not even in discussion here, regardless of age.

I just read that the Sox are at or over $200. already.

How realistic is it to expect them to spend $25. mil more?

That depends on what the commitment would be for next year. They are going to take the hit this year either way.

Lee is a time bomb right now. He's coming off a year 35 season in which he was destroyed when healthy, then went down with an elbow issue that didn't resolve and required him to shut it down again. He would need to not only show he was healthy, but also show his normal velocity again before you'd want to take on the contract. And if somehow he does that, you would then have to pay the price for vintage Lee, which would be high. If you are going to deal for Lee and get him on the cheap, the time is now, but the risk is highest currently

I'd say wait until they start showcasing him then strike if he's at least apparently healthy. I agree with you.

This!

I think this is the reason why he would likely cost both money and at least a top prospect.

When everybody notice that he is "apparently" healthy (whatever that means) everyone will start to push.

But once again if the stars align and Lee is healthy and producing at his norms and the P are interested in trade with us... Wonder What would the FO be willing to give up, Blake? I do not see it happen... Sox giving up him or P accepting less.

There is the possibility that the Phillies are so bad this year that they fire Amaro before the trade deadline, and someone else takes over.

This team looks ugly on paper.

Well... Add another star haha

If we were willing to give up a top prospect for Lee I'd better assemble a competitive pack around this prospect trying to trade for Cueto while trying to make him a solid extension... Although I think the Reds will try to lock him out.

I really really think that it will be very difficult to grab a No. 1 at the TD. I see teams offering extensions to their aces... and even if we trade for an imminent top FA he will cost us top prospect(s)... This is why I think it was a mistake letting walk Lester and not pushing for Shields since they would have cost only money.

Anyways time will tell how this end up.

Yes. I have been a closet Shield fan since when he emerged in Tampa. Iortiz is correct that he has pitched a bunch in the AL East. I don't know the numbers but Lee has pitched a bunch in the AL and he was always "The Guy" many of us have wanted on our team because The King was never going to be available.

That fact alone makes Lee a more than intriguing idea.

I don't like the $ involved but it sure would be fun to see him dominate in a Sox uniform.

His 2014 fundamentals were right in line with career - the dropoff in either basic or advanced numbers was small. The health issue is considerable.

@MDGonzales: Lester scratched from Saturday's start because of a "dead arm." Maddon says Lester still in line for opener

Buchholz is a clown. I cant wait till this loser is out of boston. I have no hope for him to turn things around.

What - You didn't like the chain he was wearing or what?

It is a constant frustration watching a guy with some real talent continue to flap about, either getting injured, shelled, or just under achieving. Today he was really toast out there and if Farrell is smart he will NOT assign him as the No. 1 guy because Buchholz simply cannot handle being in that spot. Placed down at No. 3 or 4 he might get his game together and surprise but to expect him to be the bell cow of the staff to me in an exercise in futility.

Glad I could finally get something going here. I'll say it again - He looked better today then he did in his last outing. He ain't no ace. A solid middle of the rotation guy if healthy. Sure, he will tease us now and then but that is what he is. Sadly, outside of Porcello, we got nothing better. On the farm - Maybe Rodriguez maybe not. Owens, Johnson, Wright? That is one of the reasons why I would keep Barnes working as a starter.

I agree that Porcello is likely the best starter now. And I think that Miley may be okay. Other than that, this rotation is just crap.

Aw, what do you know about running a major league team? ;) But I fear that you are right about this rotation.

We better score bunch of runs, this pitching staff is not encouraging at all.

The team should score a bunch of runs. The pitching won't always be pretty, but it should be decent enough to allow the offense a chance to win.

Unlike in 2013, last year when we were down by 3 or even 2 runs, there was very little confidence that the offense would be able to come back. I think it will be a different feeling this year.

Ted I know NOTHING about running an MLB team. I do know how to run a business.

As two old farts on this board we can claim that we have seen this before. It's not the end of the world and may not be a total disaster having 3 of 5 starters being little more than schlock ( and I admit that I have always liked Masterson and even see some promise in Kelly ). I don't claim to know it all. I see what the Sox are doing and it is familiar to me. I don't drink the koolaide and I am not a doom and gloomer. I calls them as I sees them.

This team is no better than second place ( Baltimore takes the Division ) and may slide to a battle with the Yankees for 3rd.

This!

I think everybody is doing this here. Problem is that some see the team more encouraging while some not that much, and is when the fights start.

For example, to me our pitching could be ending up as the worst in the ALE easily, while the offense is probably the best in baseball, reason why I think this team is very, very unbalanced, even worse than 2011.

Felix Doubront released by the Cubs. What happened to him? I wonder if the Red Sox might be interested.

Can't see it happening. The kid is another dope that had plenty of chances with the Sox and never buckled down.

I wonder why the Cubs released him? Probably more of the same lazy ass adolescent s***.

You're all over the place because you would like answers that are just not available right now.....and while I'm on that I am totally in the same boat with you. Kelly ought to be a better pitcher than he has shown so far......and on that three of our starters must really step up this season and how great it would be f Buchholz really gave us a full and terrific year? We can win the division if a lot of our players don't take a siesta for most of the season.

What happened to him? He stunk and got worse and worse, that's what. As for the Red Sox being interested, that would mean they have already entered Desperation Boulevard and we're in deeper s*** than otherwise thought. NO THANKS!!!!!!!!!

One day it's Chacin, the next Doubront. Somebody please pass the Xanax.

Word is that he will catch on somewhere as a reliever.

I'm done with the guy. I'd rather send a plane to Japan to pick up Dice - K.
