What? How did the Sox underestimate his value? They applied their own value to him and did not pay more than whatever that figure was.

I think that the Sox misplayed this matter by not offering a reasonable 5 year deal PRIOR to spring training 2014. The 70 mil offer was a joke. However I never saw a quote from Lester saying that he was insulted. That is an idea put forth by the media and fans. I'm not saying 70 was a good place to start, by the way. I would have started at about 4/96 -5/110 and made a full court press at near those figures topping out at about 5/125 and made it clear that that would be the cap.

I'm not sure how to interpret what you have said here. I normally make allowances for your less than perfect mastery of the English language ( no insult intended here, Ortiz ). But this sentance make no sense. It does seem that you are insulting those that oppose your view, however.

Yeah, it was strange. That's why I said I think they screwed up. I'm sure they knew they were starting low with the $70 mil offer, but I think they underestimated exactly how low they were starting. IMO, they put a little too much faith in Lester's willingness to take a home team discount.

 

Does not topping the highest bidder mean that the team really didn't want the player in the first place? Of course not. That's the thing about free agency though. There's almost always going to be a team that will be willing to give out the crazy contract for a certain player.

 

I may be completely wrong about this. None of us knows for sure. Personally, I think it's Lucchino's fault.

I would have signed Lester last offseason. Shields is ok for 3 years, but he wants more. I'd offer 3/70 and move on if he doesn't take it.

 

I would have Cecchini at 3b. Outfield would be SV/Mookie/Castillo.

It's not finding excuses. It's trying to understand the rationale behind their decisions. We might not always agree with what they do, but regardless of that, there is a reason why they do what they do. And it probably goes far deeper than what we see on the surface, both in terms of short and long term impact.
