That just sugar coats the central issue which is that fat people suffer diminishing health earlier in life.

No one here is saying that tub of goo can not play baseball. He is on an MLB team and has a $98. mil contract.

His body will break down much sooner than a person who is in much better shape. That is fact, unless he is some freak or anomaly.

And here is a point no one is mentioning. There is no reason fat boy can not lose 30-40 pounds and become even better. To deny this is just stupid. He makes the choice everyday to remain fat because he is too lazy to do anything about it.

Nonsense to anyone who claims that he plays better fat. That is just really, really stupid.

But if it's true, then what? He showed up to camp 40 pounds lighter last year and sucked ass.

I can't speak to his efforts of last spring.

I am using my knowledge of human physiology and physics.

I make certain assumptions. Like, hey, it should be easier to get to a grounder to the left if I can move my feet faster.

To say that a person who carries 15-25% extra weight around can move faster than when he is lighter is not logical and I believe factual.

Physics: fat dudes put more energy into a hit ball. Fat dudes are better.

See: Vaughn, Mo.

Ortiz, David.

More mass does mean more strength. (I get the joke, but this is SCIENCE i'm spouting here)

We're not talking about his defense, we're talking about his hitting. His defense is what it is. He's never had above average range and likely never will because he's fat. But he's always been a known quantity regardless of his body weight. The problems start when he hits the big 3-4 which is usually when fat guys' knees start giving out.

When you see Big Papi in person, you realize that he is not fat. He is just a big strong man. Even at his heaviest, he never had a gut like Panda. The knees give out prematurely on the overweight players, e.g. CC, Mo Vaughn.

This is rationalization.

I have seen Ortiz in person over the years. He's big and strong NOW. He used to be just fat.

And fortunately the Red Sox will be out by then - they did do a solid job mitigating some of this risk

I was being serious. As long as his glove doesn't suffer, keep sending him pizza.

@PeteAbe: Farrell on Panda: "His body type hasn’t changed since signing with us. … His body works for him.”
It also works for every pizzeria and fast food joint in town.

I hate that Hanley and Panda are having fun with this. They should be on the field not working on goofy poses!!!

Let's all enjoy the hilarity. When the Sox fall upon difficult times there won't be any.

Much babble about nothing really. Everybody knew what we were getting with the signing. Nobody should have expected him to be any different. He is what he is. Considering all of the fatsoes, steroid ripped, short ones and tall ones that have had success, I would expect nothing different from him. He who thinks that you need great mobility to play third base is foolish. good instincts and quick hands. He has them both. I think that we will all be happy with him. He wants to be here! Let him be. "Fat bottomed Girls They Make the Rockin" World Go round."

Yup. I speak as a fat bastard that is no longer physically able to exercise and I know that I can lose 40-50 pound by altering my diet alone.

A guy like him with all his resources, age, and athleticism could do it much easier. All he has to do is try.

I would have signed Headly.

Sometimes when a heavy player loses a lot of weight he does look better but he may have lost a lot of strength. Not all of those 40 pounds are pure blubber. There is some muscle and lean body tissue there. I don't like Panda being so heavy but it seems to work for him, and didn't he lose a bunch of weight a couple of years ago and go off to a real slow start for the Giants before he put some of the weight back on?
