Bauer like Skaggs has been very unimpressive in his appreciated opportunities at the major league level. They received good everyday ballplayers for pitching prospects who have been disappointing thus far in limited but repeated mlb trials.

I'm surprised at your response. Generally your opinion on prospects has been to sell high on overrated prospects... something that the Diamondbacks have failed miserably at in these two trades. If they traded them at their respective peaks, they may have received much higher compensation.

I agree. Arizona screwed up and did not maximize these assets. They waited too long until they were exposed and their stock fell. They waited much too long on Skaggs. I think his Rookie status is gone. His stock is very low right now. That being said, Trumbo is a legit power bat.

Trumbo is terrible. Besides above average power, he does nothing particularly well.

Actually Trumbo is not all that bad at first base, but that doesn't work because the D'Backs have Paul Goldschmidt who was a monster this season and has superstar written all over him. Trumbo is barely adequate in the outfield and is a butcher at third, can't run worth s***, can't hit for a decent average worth beans, doesn't get hardly any walks. However, the D'Backs were constantly having trouble scoring runs and except for Paul they were without power. They now have a guy who can hit between 30-40 homers and that was what they needed more than anything if they were going to challenge the Bums next season. They needed another hitter or two so Goldschmidt would see some quality pitches more than once or twice a game.

One club told Peter Gammons (Twitter link) that the possibility of attaching Brown to Jonathan Papelbon in a trade is in play for the Phillies. In that scenario, Philadephia would use the savings to pursue starting pitching help.

Lol! The Phillies cannot give Papelbon away. Too bad for the Rivera Highway Rider.

Pirates Extend Charlie Morton

By Steve Adams [December 11 at 12:16pm CST]

The Pirates have signed right-hander Charlie Morton to a three-year, $21MM extension that could reach $30MM in total value, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.

Morton, who is represented by Jet Sports Management, will earn $4MM in 2014, $8MM in 2015-16 and has a $1MM buyout on a $10MM club option for the 2017 season. Had he not signed the extension, Morton would have been eligible for free agency following the 2014 campaign.

The 30-year-old Morton returned from 2012 Tommy John surgery this season and turned in a strong campaign. Morton pitched to a 3.26 ERA with 6.6 K/9, 2.8 BB/9 and a whopping 62.9 percent ground-ball rate that led all Major League pitchers that threw at least 100 innings.

What has this guy done to warrant this kind of long term deal? The economics of the game are so far out of whack.

Hart to Seattle.

And Logan Morrison. Although I don't rate him that highly. Hart is a good signing for 1 year and low risk at the DH spot.

Morrison has been injured a lot, but I thought he'd have slightly more value than Carter Capps, who so far has sucked ass equally against lefties and righties. I guess the Marlins just tired of the Twitter drama and wanted him off the team asap.

Colon to sign with Mets 2/20

They gave a 40 year old a 2 year contract? His ERA and WHIP have declined two years running, and last season looks almost too good to be true, but probably due to playing for Oakland, and now he's moving to even more of a pitcher's park.

Very nice pick up for the Mets imo.

Well Mark, he's pitching in a pitcher's park and he has thrown effectively recently even with his age and weight. The Mets lost a good pitcher when Matt Harvey went down and good pitching on their part gives them any kind of a chance to vie for a WC berth next season. Their division has some good teams in it and with Atlanta and Washington to contend with they need all the help they can get. Hell, even the Phillies could pose a problem in that division.

Mets are trying to trade Ike Davis. Good luck with that.

They don't need luck with that. They have at least three teams interested in Davis, including the Brewers and Pirates, who both have glaring holes at 1B but very little money. They will trade him for a lottery-ticket minor leaguer at least.

The Cubs announced that they have signed outfielder Ryan Kalish to a minor league deal with an invitation to Major League Spring Training. Kalish, 25, was originally drafted by the Red Sox when Cubs president Theo Epstein and GM Jed Hoyer were with Boston.
He can play alongside Darnell MacDonald in a Theo man-crush outfield.

You know though, Kalish had done a pretty good job when he was forced into the lineup in 2010 with all the injuries crippling the Red Sox. He hit and fielded well, a hell of a lot better than Cameron who stunk and JD Drew who the front office chose over Ryan because of that $15 million salary. So as Kalish goes down to Pawtucket for "some of Lucchino's damn more seasoning", Drew in Boston sucks and then gets hurt again and is pretty useless to the Red Sox that season. Money trumped talent and common sense. Ryan goes down to Pawtucket and gets hurt and never seems to get healthy. Sure, he could have gotten an injury in Boston, but maybe he wouldn't have. He never should have been sent down in the first place.

He's underachieved so much and still cannot hit a curveball. I have a hard time seeing another team desperate enough to trade for him, and like you say, it has to be for a very low return.

They're not interested in the return, they wanna dump the 6 mil + he'll make in arb. Whether or not he can't hit a breaking ball, there are several teams with gaping hole at 1st who appear as interested per repeated reports from different sources. The fact that he hit .286/.449/.505 during the second half of last season with more BB's than K's doesn't hurt his case either. Something may have clicked.

The guy has looked like a train wreck at the plate. He is strong as hell, but completely he is over matched by major league pitching.

LOL!

Is D-M still playing in the majors? Wow!

So another team is willing to pick up the $6mil tab? Big risk, based on half a season. He's done that before, but has never gotten any consistency to his hitting.

(And to qualify the word big, no not as big as signing Cano for a decade, but still a relative high risk for dollars involved).
