It was, because unlike most of your "gems" if there's a lack of other options, that would actually make sense. Lesser athletes have made the conversion to 1B. Suggesting Beltran couldn't is borderline retarded. However, look again at the "lack of better options part" which you keep conveniently ignoring. Please stop.

Also, by your logic, the Barry Zito contract is a good one. Now there's a REAL GEM!!!!11!!!

To use one of your pet phrases---STOP IT!!!!! Anyone who says Beltran could play first base after never playing it before is off his rocker unless you say play it like a butcher. As for take on "lack of other options", that pure crap and if you don't know that you're the only one. One option is Mike Napoli who I have said over and over again we should ink as soon as possible. Hart is an outfielder, Beltran is an aging outfielder with bad knees and little speed, and unless you're a glutton for punishment I don't want a redux of James Loney who proved he couldn't play in Boston or Justin Morneau who is about through, or Kendrys Morales who is a total butcher in the field and runs about as fast as a tortoise.

McCann is reportedly about to sign with the Yankees.

Well I was right on that one. I said the Yankees were going on a spending spree this off season.....and they are. As far as the luxury tax is concerned they're saying to hell with it. The Red Sox are World Champions and we can't have that so the LT is out the window. You mark my words....this is the only the beginning for them. They will be spending until they drop.

Fred, do you read? I said, and have said, "if there are no better options available". For a guy who says he was a teacher for a long time, you sure have awful reading comprehension. Options 1 and 2 have always been Napoli and Hart, who are the best fits. Please stop.

OK I will stop since you concede that Option No. is Napoli. Of course, Option No. 2 is Napoli and Option No. is Napoli and....well you get my picture. There is no reason for the Red Sox to let this guy walk. I have also said that we can kind of ride with the tide for some of our other needs as we see how the FA and trade markets shape up, but signing Napoli is an absolute must with me. That I won't concede for a second.

I don't "concede" that the number one option is Napoli, because i have never, ever said otherwise. It's common sense.

Bravo!!!!! We are in agreement on something. Where we might differ is that you say we can wait for awhile to sign Napoli; I say we need to sign ASAP!!!!

That's another thing i have never said. I've said that Napoli's in a holding pattern because he's waiting for the best offer, which Napoli has said himself. Fred, do you see a trend here?

I say have Butler, Vazquez, Lavarnway, Ross battle it out in the Spring.

Ross doesn't have to battle for anything though. He's our backup catcher and will be slated for 60 games or so. Which isn't to say he won't also be our best catcher.

Report coming through that Blue Jays are putting together a package for Samardzija. Will he be enough to push them over the edge next year, or are they just putting salt on their farm system at this point?

If the cards sign Perralta for 4 years at 52 MIL their quite stupid and Stephen Drew is smiling somewheres as he's better

Peralta will be the second player in 2 years (Melky Cabrera the other) to get himself a raise right after a PED suspension. Nice!

They are in a similar position that the Red Sox were going into 2013. They have talent, but some glaring holes and a lack of heart. Their GM is faced with the same types of challenges as Cherries was last year.

Sources: Perralta and cards close to a deal for 4 years and over 52 MIL.

Holy s*** the Cards are idiots.

Very shocked that Perralta is getting this much.

Edit: done deal. Cards are going to regret that deal

I've given that a little thought RSR and let me know what you and others think of it. Could it be that the Cardinals like other teams are getting tired of dealing with Scott Boras?????? I'm taking things from what Boras said himself when he called out the owners for being cheap when all that money was available. The thing with Boras is that home town discounts are nil, and where you play means even less, and whether you're with a winner or not less that that. With him it is always the big payday. And face it, most of the players are after the big payday and would shitcan being a winner for the taste of more riches. That is why that even though I'm not an Angels fan like my wife, I really admire and respect Jared Weaver for telling Boras to cool it---he wanted to stay in Anaheim and hammer out the best deal you can. I can't imagine Drew or Ellsbury telling Boras that, so that means they're payday guys too. That's their right I suppose but I don't to hear them try to ******** the press and fans that they want to be with a winner because that is secondary to them......very secondary.

That is crazy money for him.

Perralta's deal is absurd. I don't know what the hell the Cards were thinking

Definitely way overpaid, but I can see their thought process. He plays at a position where they are desperate for more production. He's been healthy his entire career. Very strong defense. No draft pick compensation. Deep playoff experience. They probably gauged the SS market and didn't find any other options.

This is so not a Cardinal move. I thought they would go after Drew before Perralta. Perralta brings so much baggage with him and it looks like they over paid to get him.

It was very surprising that the Cards would make this move.

Peralta is definitely on my spite list for 2014 - I hope he has a s***** year.

Think of it two other ways Bellhorn and tell me what you think. One, the fact that crime and cheating do pay as two players remarked as they denounced this signing in no uncertain terms. Secondly, is it possible that front offices and dealing with Boras has reached a saturation point? Seems to me by this signing that the Cardinals wanted no part of Scott Boras. Peralta is probably a better hitter than Stephen Drew, but in no way in hell is he a better fielder. If fact, as soon as Iggy was traded to the Tigers Peralta's days as a shortstop then were dead in the water. I just wonder who Boras is going to flim-flam to get Drew that humongous contract both he and Drew are seeking? I also think that more and more teams are getting very reluctant to give up a top draft choice since many of those same clubs have smartened up a lot and are not looking to dump heavily moneyed and long term contracts to free agents unless they are in the top 5 or 6 percent.

Nolasco, Hughes, and reportedly close with AJ *******. How 'bout them Twins?

I'm mostly interested in the prospects that we have coming up, but I trust in whatever TR does.

I could see this team winning anywhere between 75 and 85 games. We will see.

Navarro to the Blue Jays. Catching is the one area that seems to be going very quickly right now in the free agent market... hope the Red Sox figure out their plan quickly.
