Kershaw signs with LA at 7/215

I don't understand how he didn't the take the 300M deal that was talked about.

Holy s*** that's a lot of money. The first 30 million player. Also it exceeds the previous highest total deal for a pitcher by 40 million.

So while teams have gotten around to using sabermetrics, they haven't figured out that pitcher is the highest-risk position for serious injury? Shelling out this kind of jack is absolute folly.

Ridiculous contract.

Does anyone know if the teams get insurance on these contracts? Say, the player blows out his arm and never fulfills the contract. Do the teams have protection?

I seem to recall "back in the day", the Celtics would have contracts guaranteed by Lloyd's Of London.

I think the Yanks would have recouped some money if Arod had missed the entire season due to injury last year.

Brewers get Garza. That was quick. 4/52, and no draft pick compensation. He has plenty of potential to be both a bust and a steal. Edited by Palodios

4 yrs and $52 mil is a steal.....assuming Garza's elbow doesn't implode. He has two screws in there that have caused him to miss considerable time. Throwing 4 yrs at him is awfully risky for a small market club

So it's a risky steal.

Yanks won't be signing anymore notable FA's this off-season, Cashman said yesterday the bank is basically closed.

LOL!!!!

Yeah, and they Yankee's plan is to stay under the luxury tax

Barring unforeseen circumstances Pal I will most likely see this guy pitch against our team in the Home Opening Series early in April. That's my plan right now and my close friend who happens to be a big Rays scout of all people tells he can get me tickets from either one of his two Red Sox scout friends. Oh sure, I will most likely pass through the nose for the but what he hell I've this five other times and like 2008 this will be a flag lowering ceremony and worth every dime of it. As for Garza, if his elbow holds up he could be a big help to the Brewers because up till now they haven't really done a whole lot to improve themselves over the winter and they needed to do something.

Be honest RSR, did you honestly expect those pack of skunks to really stay under the luxury tax? I didn't think so----and I don't think anybody else did either.

The Mets have been bargain hunting for most of the season. It seems like they stick their nose in on a free agent, realize he is too much, and step back. Stephen Drew may fall to him simply because he will be the biggest bargain of the offseason.

Many of those stories about the Mets being interested in a FA are plants to appease a very angry and diminishing fan base. I have learned from my contacts that work for the Mets that through the years many of those stories are not truthful. In many cases, the Mets have not even spoken with the players agent on the phone. I have learned to believe none of the rumors about the Mets. Their ownership has zero integrity.

Well Ted, you live in the heart of Mets country, or what is left of it, and I'm sure you hear a lot of scuttlebutt about their goings-on. Now they did sign Colon and Granderson this off season so they did expend some cash but we both know that they needed more than that, and the Mets fans I know from my trips to New York are not naïve or stupid. They must know they're being played and that's a good method to make certain they are and will continue to be the second rater in the New York region.

Hellickson had elbow surgery last week. As we often ask when this happens with a Sox player, why didn't he have it right after the season?

As someone who asks this question frequently, I normally would agree. In this case, the report makes the claim that he was healthy at season's end, and hurt it when ramping up in January.

Brewers sign KRod. Ayala also off the board.

Palodios, a short vignette about KRod. In 2008 my wife and I were vacationing in San Diego and took in a Padres-Mets game. In the 7th inning Rodriguez came down to the Mets bullpen which was right next to the box seats a little down the first base line. I started playing Don Orsillo and replaying Manny's bomb off of him the previous season in the ALDS. He smiled and just shrugged is shoulders. I went up to him and stuck out my hand and he took it. We exchanged a some views and hit if off real well. The guy was a class act and I gained an enormous respect for him. He could have reacted a different way and I would have had it coming. KRod is ok with me and always will be.

He seems like a pretty chill guy. Every time I hear how old he is (30 at the moment, but I have heard it over the years) I am always surprised. He's accomplished so much, so early. Hopefully he does well with the Brewers.

I noticed the other day that Bonifacio got released. Boni-fiasco as Remdawg calls him. I thought the guy had some skills, speed and versatility. I was a bit surprised at his outright release. Does he have some locker room or other personality problems?
