You couldn't work Fillmore into that?

Ever since I first read Mallard Fillmore, I decided that presidency never happened

@BestofBSMW: This is the type of hard-hitting analysis only Nick can provide: MT @nickcafardo Jake Peavy has a 4.15 ERA in his last two starts.

You don't say, Nick?

Looking back on the brief pun war, I am forced to declare UN the winner, as BTR used "Woodward", which is not a presidential first or last name. I imagine he meant "Woodrow", but still. Carry on.

Let's keep your hairy ass out of this. If we needed material to make a hairpiece for one of this site's old timers, i'd contact RSFFL

What. The. f***?

I actually drafted Buch and Lester day one. Buch has been sitting on my DL the entire season though. I picked up Lackey and Peavy a few weeks ago.

Wait, what time other than when he was signed by Seattle after hitting 48 homers did this happen?

He was also above average for most of his time in Seattle to be fair.

You can credit that to him playing in Texas all you want, he's been arguably their best hitter for 3 years now.

OT: This is a good move, but I can't understand how you can get all worked up about getting someone like Jake Peavy. Maybe if this was 5 years ago, or even I guess if he was pitching the way he was last year. He hasn't really been that great this year, and now he's coming to Boston to face AL East competition.

I guess we'll just have to see.

When he was with the Sox. He was a .266/.317/.442/.759 hitter in Seattle for 5 seasons and that was basically what he did each year for 5 years, it wasn't like he had a monster year here and there, and then a bad year that killed his 5 year average.

Then he comes to Boston and becomes a .321/.365/.553/.919 guy. His AVG went up 50 points, his OBP 50 points, his SLG 100 points, and his OPS 160 points! All on a 1-year "audition" contract! I think thats why the Sox didn't keep him. Theo probably thought he was on something too.

They didn't keep him because they traded for Adrian Gonzalez, and thought that Kevin Youkilis would be an adequate replacement for him.

Its interesting this year too look at peavys numbers. For the most part, in the games hes won, hes been pretty damn good. But for the most part, in the games hes lost, he has pitched dreadful. There is no grey area. It seems like when he pitches bad, he has a really bad outing.( thats just based off of this year). Edited by BigPapi

Peavy has a 1.58 HR/9 rate. That's what is keeping his ERA so high. Going to Fenway will probably help keep some balls in the yard.

True and hopedully. In his loses, he has avergaed 1.25 hrs allowed per loss. In wins, hes averaged about 1.43 hrs allowed per win. He has had shorter outings in his loses, but it shows its not only the long ball killing him. He does allow baserunners too in his loses.

Who's complaining about it?

It's obviously for insurance, but is it really ideal for your insurance arm to be a guy who's coming from the AL Central and going into the AL East, is very inconsistent, and has been hurt as much as Jake Peavy has?

I can't say I'm complaining, all we lost was Iglesias, who has come back down to earth. All we've gained though is Jake Peavy.

With Buccholz situation in the air, this is the kind of pitcher you need to get back to solidify the rotation. I still think Lester/Lackey are your top guys until CB comes back. But remember even WS contenders need a Derek Lowe type of pitcher. At this point in his career that's how I see Peavy, and that's not bad at all. He's a veteran pitcher who has seen a lot, and will probably get better as he settles in with the Sox.

I don't know how Red Sox fans can, even for a second, question whether or not the Peavy acquisition is good for the team.

Take a closer look at his season.

6 1/3 IP, 12, TWELVE, earned runs, and 15 hits in the two starts before hitting the DL with a fractured rib (nothing wrong with the shoulder that had been troubling him). I think it would be very fair to attribute those 2 bad starts to the rib injury. Prior to that he had logged 7 quality starts in 9 chances.

If you take away those 2 bad starts, before hitting the DL, from Peavy what you get is a pitcher who has gone 73 2/3 innings this season, with a 3.17 ERA and 1.03 WHIP. And you aren't going to get that player for Jose Iglesias + a bunch of nobodies. GREAT trade by the Sox. We just got 2012 Jake Peavy who pitched to a 3.37 ERA over 219 innings!

You, my friend, are on something.

Explain how any of that relates to your statement that Adrian Beltre has a history of monster contract seasons followed by sucking immediately after?

His success has continued in Texas, and I have every reason to believe it would have continued in Boston as well.

Also, my reasoning for highlighting Seattle seems to have whooshed right over your head. Let me help you out: Seattle is where good hitters go to die, and Adrian Beltre put up pretty decent numbers in 3/5 seasons, was still average for the first, and pretty bad but also injured in the last. In the middle though, he was about an .800 OPS hitter which is well above average.

Honestly, Beltre could easily be explained by the fact that he was at Dodger Stadium before that, and if Theo is stupid enough to have passed on Beltre because he thought he was "on something" then I'm glad he isn't with the organization anymore. Beltre's been about a .900 OPS hitter since then, and I wish we had a bat like that in the lineup right now, especially playing 3rd instead of...

He's a veteran pitcher who has been pretty average for about 5 years now. He has pitched in the postseason twice and was rocked both times.

Also, he only pitched 200 innings once in the last 5 years. Hell, he's only pitched 120 innings once in the last 5 years. I think that's something that you have to think about. If he's healthy this is great, it gives us a very nice 1-4 when Buchholz returns.

But the puns were supposed to be presidents, you just went off in Agnew direction with no warning.

Also, so as not to derail the thread, I wholeheartedly support the trade for Jake Peavy. This isn't exactly Slocumb for Varitek and Lowe, but it is a much better deal for the Sox than the other teams and in the end, that's awesome. I look forward to his first start.
