We got two of the best names from the draft. Cheers up, Ball Four and Stankees.

One of the biggest concerns will be all of the future puns YOTN makes in gamethreads. I hope we trade both of them the second we get the chance or punt the picks.

It doesn't look like he'll be able to stay at catcher.

even so, he is a rare big prep bat. A lot of the prep hitters this yr are speedy, good average hitters. Denney is one of the few prep power bats

Yeah, he would make sense for the Yankees at 66.

That he would. We need power. We have Bird, O'Brien, Sanchez and Austin who profile as big league power hitters. The rest are speedy gap power guys. Adding Judge and Jagielo helps. Adding a long term prospect like Denney would be awesome

He's an interesting pick, an elite defensive second baseman. His hitting is still a work in progress. Has minor signability issues.

Maybe they should punt and get a real pick next yr. f***, this kid sounds awful. He can pick it, his arm sucks, so he is stuck at 2b. He makes good contact but has no power at all. Maybe they thought they were getting Ichiro because he models his swing after him. Earth to Newman and Oppenheimer, he isn't Ichiro! This guy sounds like he has a ceiling of Munenori Kawasaki. I'm tittilated with excitement.

From one of the draft experts on the Yankee side, he was saying he projected as a 5th-10th round pick and hence was a signability guy. Taken in the 2nd round, he should sign under slot and save some money to be thrown at Clarkin

I wonder if the Yankees panicked after they picked Clarkin and he then said multiple times how much he hates the Yankees. Seems strange, even as a money saving move. Much like I said about the Twins drafting Dozier, there was better talent out there that could be had on the cheap.

Wahl is the one who could be had for cheap who was a big talent. Regardless, we better save half the money on that pick or I'll be pissed

I hope that this kid Ball pans out and he becomes a stud starter for us. It is not often that we get such a high pick. It would be nice to get something for sucking so bad last year. Hopefully, he can make it into our rotation in 3 years (2016).

Expecting a high school pitcher to make the bigs in 3 years is the extreme of wishful thinking.

I'm surprised they went with Ball. He's a project, albeit one with an immense ceiling. Huge frame, good fastball already and a good curve. But his mechanics need to be broken down completely and he needs to grow into his body. Austin Meadows was the best on the board when they picked, IMO. For a franchise that hasn't picked in the top 10 in a decade plus, they didn't get the kind of immediate return player you expect at that level. Stankiewicz is along the same lines. Big body, good FB but he's all projection at this point. I am wondering if the sox feel that they're so loaded at the top in the pitching dept that they're going with long range talent

I think the players they really wanted got drafted. Add that to the fact they seem to be getting a bit top heavy in P prospects, add couple guys that are more long term big upside types seemed like a good alternative. I also think they won't be too upset if Ball doesn't sign at their price and heads to Texas. They go back to #7 next season in what hopes to be a deeper draft. Maybe that big top 10 quick to the Majors player will be available then. Either way I think both moves have upside.

They drop to 8 next yr if they don't sign him. I also am wondering the same thing.

Just read an interview with the guy making the choices for the Yankees in the draft. They see him as a guy who could play SS, who's gotten bigger (he's 6'2") and has shown a lot of power in HS, but was drafted this high due to 70 speed. I hope they're right, cause with the guys who were left on the board at that spot, they better not f*** this up. Denney is going to be a serious talent and we passed on him completely

I couldn't disagree more, and Jacko's final sentence most likely hit the nail on the head.

From what i've seen, the Red Sox are all about projectability when it comes to drafting pitching talent. Lefties with that kind of velocity and stuff don't grow on trees, and the upper minors are strong enough to allow the Sox to gamble on talent instead of drafting for need.

I don't even think its the now velocity they are looking at. He sits low 90s with the capability to touch 94-95. There are a lot of lefties who can do that. I watched his scouting vids, the kid's mechanics need revamping. Add that into the fact that he needs to grow into his gigantic frame and you have a kid who will probably be sitting mid 90s and touch high 90s if they develop him right. That kind of talent from the left side is very rare.
