The 2013 MLB Draft has a deep class of high school catchers, but Jon Denney is considered one of the best, especially at the plate. Denney has enough talent offensively to move off catcher if he can't cut it defensively -- scouts think that he has the highest offensive ceiling of all the high school catchers. The right-handed hitter has power to all fields and makes solid contact. His defense is a work-in-progress, but most believe he has the tools to stick behind the plate, or the athleticism to move to a corner outfield position.

John Sickels, Minor League Ball: "He has solid defensive actions, although the arm stroke could be improved upon. Even with that bit of extra movement, he still posts above average and occasionally great pop times."

Nick J. Faleris, Baseball Prospectus: "A strong and solid 6-foot-2, 200-pound frame and compact, powerful swing help Denney to produce legit plus power to all fields, which he taps into both during batting practice and in games. He shows solid balance throughout his swing and is generally quiet in his head and hands."

Baseball America: "Denney's calling card is his righthanded power, which he generates with quality bat speed and strength. He may have to tone down his aggressive approach when he faces better pitching in college."

He's big, and while he receives well, he doesn't move that well.

Actually, it's the opposite. Great pop times, strong arm, was well below average at receiving the ball this spring.

Looks like the scouts are contradicting themselves. Regardless, getting a prep bat like his is something good. It's their best pick, IMO. Especially for where they got him

Definitely the best value they've gotten this draft. Possibly one of the best values for any team this draft. I'm sure they'll try him out at catcher, but the Sox could also use a power hitting first baseman. If he doesn't work out at catcher, he should shoot up through the system relatively fast for a high school guy.

I agree. The sox have Swihart starting to come around, so they don't necessarily need him to stick at C.

O'Neil's a very toolsy guy. Still a pretty raw bat for a college prospect though, he has a pretty low floor.

He does. He's got a good hit skill, but the power skill is hard to peg. Could be good power, could be minimal.

I feel like with the new CBA, the first 10 rounds of picks need to be looked at as a single package before grading, rather than in previous years where you can judge each pick at a time.

From what I've read, it's been difficult to peg O'Neil's hit tool because his approach at the plate is so bad. He's striking out three times as much as he walks, which is really high for a college guy.

Yeah, they say he is far too amped up when he plays and he needs to tone it down a bit. Hyperaggressiveness is okay if you are an elite player. He isn't.

probably a pen arm from what they're saying

Yeah, that's what mlb.com's scouting report says as well. 6'1, only 170 pounds, throws mid 90's but not much in the way of quality breaking pitches. Another two way player, the Sox love those.

From what I'm reading, Denney might want over slot money. Not surprising, considering he was projected to be a top 10 guy a few months ago. So it's not surprising the Sox went with a bullpen guy who's maxed out his potential and could be a cheap sign. Wouldn't be surprised if the Sox go cheap for their next pick as well. I'm sure they want to free up money to sign Denney, given that he was a top 10 talent before questions about his defense.

Sox take Corey Littrell. A lefthanded college starter. Doesn't have lightning stuff but should be relatively easy to sign and he has high pitchability so he could be in the majors relatively soon. Low ceiling, high floor.

That's it for today. The Sox drafted a bunch of under slot garbage rounds 5-10. That isn't to say they had a bad day today, it's more a function of how the draft works now under the new CBA. These are the two players from those rounds who I would consider legitimate prospects.

Jordan Austin - Very athletic high school outfielder. Ran a 4.4 40-yard dash, bench presses 330 pounds, throw from the outfield clocked at 88 mph.

Forrest Allday - College outfielder with a very discerning eye. Ranked fourth in the nation with a .554 OBP and more than a walk a game in 2011 Division II competition. Moved up to Division I last year, where he had a .486 OBP (14th in the nation). He ranked 3rd in the nation with 1.04 walks a game. Also had seven outfield assists in 55 games.
