That be a pretty damn good young IF for the Cubs if Olt Blossomed like Rizzo.

It looks like Neil Ramirez is the centerpiece of the package, so I'm not sure if Olt is still included. I'm crossing my fingers that he is. I guess we'll find out soon as Garza is supposed to pitch tomorrow and the Rangers really want to get the deal done before then.

Agreed. Pedey is the one player who I don't bat an eye with in regards to offering a long term, big money deal. Get it done.

5 years, sure. 7 or 8, probably not. He's still just the same age as Ells.

Not sure where else to put this, but the Sox are in talks with Dustin Pedroia on an extension. This one is a no-brainer. Get it done, I don't care if it takes Cano money -- and this is coming from a guy who practically never advocates long term signings.

I agree, we do need to get it done. Pedroia has expressed his willingness to stay here long-term. The front office has expressed their willingness to keep him hear long term. His contract runs through 2014 with a team option for 2015, so getting this done this season is not too much of a worry. We have until the end of 2015 to give him an extension. Although, I imagine it will get done way before that. Realistically, I could see us signing him through 2020 when he will be 36 (if I am guessing right). Then before or around that time, we can evaluate his performance and go from there, but I think locking him up long-term is smart. He is a franchise player and a leader that needs to be part of this team until he retires.

I don't think Pedey will ever even think about leaving Boston. He'll sign any contract for any amount of money. Due to recent events, Cherington shouldn't do hundreds of millions, but whatever works is fine.

Pedey strikes me as the kind of guy who would take a discount to stay here. I think we'll be able to get him for a fraction of what Cano winds up getting from NY or LA.

So Pedroia isn't leaving Boston if the sox try to lowball him? That's asinine. The guy will get a big contract and he deserves it. My guess on the open market would be $17-$20 mil per annum extension. Seeing as they have him through 2015, I'd say more in the $16-17 mil range for 6 yrs would do.

This Buchholz situation is very much like the Ortiz ordeal at the beginning of this season. Both players said they are hurting. The medical staff in each case said they can play without further damage. Both refuse to play. The Red Sox did nothing-- I guess giving the benefit of the doubt to the players. Papi came back to work when his salary was going to be affected by the time off the season. Buchholz doesn't have that problem.

No, no it isn't. Because they can't even pinpoint what exactly is wrong with Buchholz. Repeating the same flawed idea over and over in every thread on the board doesn't make it right.

That's wrong. Ortiz has always been a guy who wants to play. Check out the numbers.

And Ortiz came back and absolutely raked!

I see Buchholz is getting a second opinion. Could be an effort to undo the stalemate.

Agreed about Pedey. His value is almost priceless.

Red Sox Sign Contreras, Lyon To Minor League Deals

By Steve Adams [July 19 at 2:54pm CST]

The Red Sox have signed right-handers Jose Contreras and Brandon Lyon to minor league deals and assigned each to Triple-A Pawtucket, the team announced (hat tip: Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald on Twitter).

Contreras, 41, was released by the Pirates just over 24 hours ago. He's spent time on the bereavement list and dealt with shoulder inflammation recently, but as Tim Dierkes noted yesterday, Contreras has excelled at Triple-A Indianapolis of late. The veteran Cuban has allowed just one earned run with 19 strikeouts against five walks in his past 16 2/3 minor league innings. Contreras is represented by agent Jaime Torres.

Lyon, 33, was released by the Mets 10 days ago. He was terrific in his first 31 1/3 innings for the Mets, posting a 3.16 ERA with 22 strikeouts against 10 walks in that time. However, he yielded eight earned runs over his next three innings of work, including a disastrous six-run meltdown against the Nationals. This will be Lyon's second stint with Boston, as he saved nine games and pitched to a 4.12 ERA in 59 innings with the Sox back in 2003. Lyon is a client of Meister Sports Management.

Seriously, what is the point of this^? Talk about throwing s*** at the wall and hoping it will stick.

The Mets will need to be "overwhelmed" to trade Marlon Byrd, writes Jorge Castillo of the Newark Star Ledger. "Overwhelmed," of course, is a relative term, and manager Terry Collins states things more lightly later in the article: "Right now, Marlon Byrd’s a huge piece. If Marlon Byrd’s going to get moved, we’re going to get something good back." Castillo's article meshes with previous reports that the Mets may simply stand pat at the deadline.
What a joke!

I don't know much about Lyon, but he does have 79 career saves. If they get lucky maybe he'll end up as a low leverage reliever?

Lyon bombed out of the Mets bull pen of fire starters.

It's not like it cost him much so they were a couple of low risk low reward moves. I'm not too worried. And I thought Lyon was doing well towards the beginning of the year and then bombed recently.

That's just not true.

Selling teams are still listening to offers. They don't get desperate until near the deadline when they have all the final offers. It doesn't make sense to overpay in order to get one more week out of a reliever.

Brandon Lyon is well worth a flier. I'd suggest you look at his stats the past few years, and then his game log for this year. His numbers this year look awful and then you take a closer look and see that he had one absolutely horrific performance, but other than that his era was in the 3's.

I'm not worried about these guys. They are just not going to provide anything for the MLB team other than a couple of low leverage situation punching bags.

Lyon had a 3.00 ERA, with a 1.20 WHIP for Houston and Toronto last year. He's had a bad year so far, but you never know what could happen. There is a difference between a bad garbage time pitcher, and a good garbage time pitcher, and if he turns into the later, that's still something.

He was bombing badly with the Mets before they cut him. If the Mets couldn't tolerate him in that horrid pen of theirs, that should tell you something.

Peavy is the guy.

The Sox are watching his start today. With 22 million left on his contract the next two years and injury history, he probably prices himself out for many teams, while possibly still being a very good arm.

If it is Peavy, I would think the Sox would end up willing to give up a bit of talent...not talent they really care about but talent in order to cut into that money. Their bullpen issues are really the most pressing at this point. Taz is not looking good and we could easily overtax Ueh. Miller put a big hurt on the pen when he went down and Bailey is gone. I think the smart play will be to take care of the pen issue if they can. If that gets done, then maybe they can go get a rotation arm. But I don't where the pen is at all at this point.
