What to the Red Sox get in return for Shoppach ? He was set to earn 1.34 Million for 2012 and he was a free agent at the end of the season. Better to get something for him now than nothing for him later, but...........a player to be named later ? That's it ?

Does this go down with the Youkilis for Lillibridge trade, and the Bowden for Byrd trade ?

I really hope this is the start to freeing up some money for some other more meaningfull trade ?

Waiver wire transactions frequently involve a player to be named because players have to clear through the waiver wire. Sometimes it takes time to clear the player to be named, and sometimes the player to be named is claimed by another team and has to be pulled back..

I've wondered this for a long time and couldn't find reference to it anywhere. If a player on waivers is claimed and the teams agree on a trade, do the other player(s) involved have to clear waivers all the way to the receiving team?

Yes, and that is why waiver deals after the deadline are frequently for a player to be named later.

Every GM in baseball keeps tabs on the Red Sox--because you never know when they will be giving players away. LOL.

Shoppach was a guy they should have dealt a long time ago to make room for Lavernway. They knew damn well Lav's defense was good at Pawtucket.

Speier just tweeted Iggy's manager at Pawtucket says Iggy's hitting is "major league ready." Somebody wake up Cherington. This guy is as slow as molasses.

Yeah, he's a backup catcher, so that's it. It allows Lavarnway to get more PT.

Also, maybe wait until we know who the player is. PTBNLs actually do turn into players.

Hell, this could end up being a Harry Chiti/John McDonald situation. It would certainly sum up the futility of most of this season's activities.

I just dont get why they didnt do this before July 1. It effectively means that the player they might have their eyes on could get hurt and will definitely lose some time acclimating to the sox system. I doubt it is a real prospect, but there are some players who blossom.

A couple of things. First, Bailey is due to come off the DL and needs to be placed on the 40-man roster, I believe. Moving Shoppach clears that roster space. Second, they want Lavarnway up and playing, and Shoppach was just taking up his space. I'd rather them have traded Salty for something bigger, but moving Shoppach for a PTBNL (who sometimes is a good player but in this case is almost certainly insignificant) is probably the right play here.

YES!!!

THEY TRADED A CATCHER TO MAKE WAY FOR LAVARNWAY......

f***!!!!! they traded the wrong one.

Thanks, now I didn't have to be the one to say it.

I am just glad that we are not playing the Mets this weekend.

If we were, Shoppach would probably have the series of his life.

If he was traded to the Mets' date=' who do we get? The Mets don't have anyone good.[/quote']

We get Ryan Lavarnway.

Red Sox Acquire Beato To Complete Shoppach Deal

By Mike Axisa [August 16 at 1:40pm CST]

The Red Sox have acquired right-hander Pedro Beato from the Mets as the player to be named later in the Kelly Shoppach trade, reports ESPN's Keith Law (on Twitter). New York acquired Shoppach earlier this week.

Beato, 25, has pitched to a 4.67 ERA with 5.6 K/9 and 3.7 BB/9 in 71 1/3 relief innings with the Mets over the last two seasons. They originally acquired him as a Rule 5 Draft pick from the Orioles prior to last season, then retained his rights by keeping him on the roster all summer. Beato has pitched to a 4.14 ERA in 37 Triple-A innings this season while also missing time with a shoulder problem.

He attended my High School in Brooklyn.

...so they gave him away. We couldn't give away Salty instead? Both are worth nothing.

Come on guys, you could be the shrewdest GM in history and you still aren't going to get much back for 6 weeks of a 32-year old backup catcher on a one-year contract.

Not sure there is much to angst over here. Shop gets a chance to catch on with another team. The Sox were not going to bring Shop back. They may move Salty in the off season as well and end up bringing in somebody else to be the backup to Lavs for next year.

He gave away Youk, Scutaro and Shop. They shouldn't even be called trades, because that makes us think that we got something in return. LOL!

Sore points

as much as i want the Bailey deal to work out.. its been a mess of a job what Cherries has done so far..

when the time was right he was afraid to pull the trigger and when As want Aviles he wants to sell high..

Aviles is useless to this team right now.. get a AA SP and call it a day man..

big mistake by Cherrington.
