Red Sox Sign Ross Ohlendorf

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [February 16 at 8:07am CST]

The Red Sox signed Ross Ohlendorf, Peter Gammons of MLB Network tweets. Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe confirms that the right-hander is in Red Sox camp in Fort Myers, Florida and MLBTR has confirmed that the sides agreed to a minor league deal.

Ohlendorf pitched respectably out of the Pirates' rotation in 2009-10, when he posted a 3.98 ERA with 5.9 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 in 285 innings over the course of 50 starts. However, the 29-year-old Princeton graduate struggled in 2011, posting an 8.15 ERA in nine starts and allowing nine home runs in 38 2/3 innings. The Pirates released him after the season.

Oh Boy!

Interesting buy low move. I can actually see this working out.

I just see him in the same category as Silva, Cook, Padilla, etc. I do admit that in 2009 and 2010 that his numbers were okay. Last year he was garbage. I am not going to say that I can see this working out, but let's just say by signing him we have a lot of guys competing for that 5th spot and it would not surprise if one turns out to be decent for us. If he can regain his 2009 and 2010 form, then I would be more than happy to give him a shot in the 5th spot. Let's just hope one of these guys to have a rebound year.

What are we going to say if not a one of them pans out?

Odds are the 4th spot is going to either Bard or Aceves. That leaves one of the two in the bullpen. If one of these guys does not pan out, we could give either Bard or Aceves a try (whichever is in the pen). That would be a scenario if we had no other options. Trading for a pitcher before the deadline is always an option. Dice-K will be back in the summer sometime. We do have options that we could explore. I just hope one of these guys can either have a decent bounce back year or at least get us by until Dice-K comes back or until we can trade for a pitcher by the deadline. I might be overly optimistic about Dice-K, but I think he might be more valuable to this team this season than a lot of people think (I just hope he has half a season left in him).

I just checked his career stats. I'd rather that they invited Bill Lee to camp. Will they start throwing the likes of Ohlendorf and Silva out there so we start to be for Wakefield?

Ohlendorf is horrible. No redeeming qualities whatsoever. An abnormaly high BABIP (.372) is to be expected when you're allowing line drives (22%) like it's going out of style and Homers (2.04/9) like it's what they're paying you to do.

Good enough for the AAA rotation maybe.

Just a few short years ago, he had a 12.8 K/9 rate with a 167 ERA+ (disregard the fact that it was in 6.1 IP).

He has the stuff to anchor Portlands rotation for years to come.

I just threw up my hands and said what else is knew when I got the word that "Reliable' Russ had signed with us, and judging by the reactions and caustic remarks by most of you one is taking this signing very seriously. As my pal Pumpsie put it....MORE DUNG FOR THE HEAP!!!!! That about says it all.

He's coming back from a shoulder injury and he looked a shadow of himself last season. At his best, he's a sinkerballer with a heavy 2 seamer that can get lots of groundballs. But with his shoulder being questionable, you may get the gopherball serving alter ego that showed up recently.

Is their some kind of record, Guiness Book maybe--for an MLB team signing the most useless SPs in one season? We've got to hold the record now with this loser on board. I guess it's only apropos seeing as the last record we just set was for the biggest choke in baseball history.

I hate to say it, Fred, but all these useless arms are giving me flashbacks to Blunder's clueless brainstorm back in 06 when he set us up with that rotation of Jason Johnson, Kyle Snyder, Lenny DiNardo and that endless list of losers.

Yes, that is when he started using the term low risk/high reward acquisition. That drives me crazy. Jason Johnson was high risk whenever he took the mound. Low cost -- maybe, but not low risk. We lost 5 of his 6 starts. He was the worst starter by W-L in the history of baseball. I used to call him The Ultimate Loser. You bring back some painful memories.

Selective memory at its best.

The 2006 Red Sox team had Beckett, Schilling, Clement, Wakefield and Wells as its front five with Lester and the others as depth.

Let's not make stuff up.

More to the point, what did the 07 squad have coming into the season that they really could count on?

Beckett was a question mark, Schilling was old, no one knew what to expect from Daisuke, Wake was the #4, and Tavarez.. well, nuff said -- we were lucky even to get what we got there.

At least we have Lester, who we have some idea is going to come in and pitch his 200 innings with a mid 3 ERA.

Ohlendorf isn't a bad gamble. If he's healthy, he's Bronson Arroyo. Not too bad. If not, you don't lose a lot.
