Red Sox Minor League Report: Every Sox Affiliate Takes Home Victories; Isaiah Jackson Impresses With All-Around Offensive Display

Triple-A Worcester Red Sox

Season Record: 65-59

After an offensive rut in the last game, Worcester’s bats woke up, defeating the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (New York Yankees) 7-1.

Eight of Worcester’s nine hitters collected a hit, including multi-hit games from Roman Anthony, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and Vinny Capra. Roman hit a single over the third baseman for a single in the first inning, then came around to score on a Trevor Story sacrifice fly. Later on in the sixth, Anthony cracked a double, hitting off the right field wall to bring in Tsung-Che Cheng, who also hit an RBI double beforehand. 

The Sox had four doubles as a group; two more came from Nate Eaton and Kristian Campbell in back-to-back fashion, both of which brought in runs. After an amazing month of July, Kristian has cooled down a bit in August, showing some promise with the double clocked at a 100.1 MPH exit velocity. 

Blake Wehunt had arguably his best start since his promotion to Worcester, punching out four batters while giving up just one run on four hits and two walks through five innings, while also earning his second win for Worcester. Osvaldo Berrios had some trouble finding the zone but still came out of his two no-hit innings of work unscathed. Seth Martinez followed up with two solid innings of his own to end it off, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out five RailRiders.

Double-A Portland Sea Dogs

Season Record: 62-60

The Sea Dogs' impressive all-around effort led to a blowout 11-2 victory over first-place Richmond Flying Squirrels (San Francisco Giants).

Richmond took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning, and Portland responded in the second with a two-run bases-loaded single from Justin Gonzales, who got on base four times this game, putting the Sea Dogs ahead 2-1. The Flying Squirrels tied it up on an unfortunate wild pitch in the fourth, but the tie game did not last long.

Portland had a massive fifth inning, blowing the game open. With runners on the corners and no one out, Brooks Brannon hit a screamer directly over the right fielder, bringing in two runs. After a wild pitch brought in another run, Ahbram Liendo, who recorded his first save in his career as a pitcher, blasted a two-run homer to make it a 7-2 game.

Liendo did not stop swinging, hammering another run in with an RBI single in the seventh, while also coming around to score on a bases-loaded Gonzales walk, now a 9-2 game. Henry Godbout wanted in on the fun, blasting a two-run bomb to extend Portland’s lead, 11-2.

The Sea Dogs came out with a bullpen game, with Steven Brooks starting the game out with two one-run innings. Caleb Bolden, who earned the win, gave up a run on a wild pitch while tossing two solid innings. Joe Vogatsky came in after the big lead, throwing four fantastic innings, giving up no runs with three strikeouts, then catcher Hudson White made his 12th appearance as a pitcher, throwing a shutout ninth inning to end it.

High-A Greenville Drive

Season Record: 54-66

Greenville followed up their one-run performance in the last game with a 7-1 victory against the Rome Emperors (Atlanta Braves).

Isaiah Jackson started out the game with a bang. The outfielder's 20th homer of the season was a two-run bomb, putting the Drive on top 2-0 in the first. Rome hit a home run of their own in the second, but Nazzan Zanetello responded with a solo bomb as well, making it a 3-1 game. 

Third baseman Antonio Anderson recorded two RBIs, a sacrifice fly in the third, and an RBI single in the fifth. Ronny Hernandez added to the extra-base hit party with an RBI double, his 11th of the season. Jackson’s third RBI of the night was a double in the seventh inning to bring in Jake Schaffner, who not only recorded a triple and two singles, but also scored every time he was on base thanks to his teammates. 

Dylan Brown pitched great through 6 ⅓ innings, giving up just one run on two hits and punching out five Emperors. Brandon Neely battled in his 1 ⅔ innings of work, allowing three walks but still did not push any runs across the plate. Joey Gartrell finished it off, tossing a scoreless ninth with one strikeout.
