Peering into the Pitching Garbage Pail with your Pal, Pal

Even the King of Talksox recognizes me as a contributive, well-informed poster. I just have low tolerance for ignorance, and cant be bothered to split hairs with people who see the glass as half empty at all times, and view themselves as realists. I know your ass still stings from when I told you your supposed insider knowledge was a crock of s***, but you're actually the one who's being non-contributive this time. At least what I said was applicable to the discussion. You, on the other hand, are just blathering.

Its never too late to learn some respect for women and whippersnappers, pops.

Excellent/true post. Don't think you needed to mention KOTS but SBF and the Entourage do like and respect his posts. ;)

Go Emmz.

No. What I'm saying is that the Red Sox have built their team around guys that won't make it past the 6th inning... all while losing 2-3 of their best bullpen guys.

If the Red Sox move forward with the group they have, they're going to be relying solely on luck. Instead of building a pitching staff, and adding depth, the FO has built depth and wants to use it for their pitching staff immediately.

So the 1-3 won't make it past the 6th inning?

Also, who's to say they won't add a starter before or during the season? Or that one of the reclamation projects will step up and eat innings? As you say yourself "IF" they go with this group.

I understand that you are mad because they haven't signed a pitcher yet.....but let's not lose perspective.

He's not bad, i respect a700, the only one I absolutely can't stand is Muggah, until now. SBF is obviously looking for the whip.

My history with KOTS doesn't warrant the same respect. I have tried.

Agree with the rest of your post.

Reality? You swear this team downgraded so much. MVP said it best in his last post. We only missed the playoffs by 1 game. Why people are throwing the white flag before the season stars I don't know. At least let the season play happen and see what happens from there.

I am a realist, not a pessimist. I think that as long as the team stays under the cap we are on the right track. We got rid of a manager and GM who were not doing a good job and replaced them with the kind of manager we need; the jury is out on the new GM so far. Also, to date Wakefield and Varitek have not been invited to join the team; thats a plus too. The needed housecleaning has begun.

On the other hand, our pitching is no better than last year, a year in which we won 89 games and finished out of the playoffs for the second year in a row. We have only three decent SP, and our bullpen is questionable. While we will probably score enough runs to win games, our catcher, SS (who is our SS again??) and our RF are potential black holes in the lineup. We have been picked to finish below both the Yankees and the Rays in the early analysis.

Sorry folks; I just don't see that we have improved enough to warrant pompoms and pink hats this year. Hope I am wrong.

Not mad, baffled. It doesn't make sense. Buchholz is a huge part of this organization's future-- I expect them to watch him closely, and count his pitches carefully-- Bard too.

All while carrying a closer who pitched 40 innings each of the last two years, and a green setup man. If they couldn't afford Oswalt/Kuroda/Jackson, that's fine, I understand the restrictions of a budget. But why not Maholm/Saunders?

Why build a team that is so close to being championship caliber, then trade away the starting shortstop, and make insulting offers to free agents?

Posted
And on that note-- it just seemed like BC was so close. He made great deals out of nothing. Then he waited patiently, patiently, for a quality pitcher to be available at good value.... and now that Roy Oswalt is getting desperate, the FO doesn't let him go in for the kill.

What are the insulting offers? Per reports, the 5 MM offered by the Red Sox to Oswalt is a similar number as to what he has received from other teams.

As for the rest of your post, the salary relief from Scutaro may yet allow them to add a pitcher. Why go for suckitude like Maholm or Saunders? Let them sign a better pitcher or asses their needs during the season.

Sorry, but this is conjecture. Per all reports, Oswalt is simply reluctant to pitch in Boston. The Sox are his third option at best. There is no "kill" to go in for unless the Cards and Rangers give him a definite "No" answer.

I would much rather have Maholm than nothing at all. And I'd much rather sign a pitcher than sell the farm for someone barely better than Maholm at the deadline.

Maholm is awful. Also, why would they necessarily have to sell the farm for a pitcher barely better than Maholm? Better options for a palatable price will appear. You are not being reasonable.

Early analysis' date=' sure......we were picked to win it all last year....how'd that work out?[/quote']

Where do you see this team finishing, and why?

As constructed right now? AL Wild Card.

Why? Because of improvements to the management and conditioning areas, improvement from the 4 and 5 spot (realistically, they can't be worse) a modicum of better health, a bullpen that will perform better than expected under BV and a very potent offense.

I think 7-8 million take-it-or-leave-it with incentives gets it done. None of the teams he wants to go to even remotely need him, and he hasn't completely rebuffed the Sox like he did with Pittsburgh/Detroit.

True, dat.

As a corollary, our team has much less room for error than either the Yankees or the Rays...or the Angels or the Tigers or the Rangers. Just look at who they hired to fill in to provide "depth". Its pathetic.

It would be an incredible stroke of luck for us to pull this season out of the fire.

You think. That doesn't make it correct. We are operating based on assumption. I would take this same instance if he had received negative responses from Texas and Cardinals, his first and second options. Until that happens, Boston is unlikely.

With all due respect madam' date=' all you can really say is a lot of nothing of substance. Between what passes for humor or sarcasm I have yet to read one of your posts where you actually contribute an opinion to what the Red Sox can do to better themselves or offer give an opinion with relation to the team. Sometimes you ladies on these Red Sox boards can really be pills in this regard. Looking forward to seeing you tell us how you see the Red Sox shaping up this season and why. That would be very refreshing.[/quote']

I find this post offensive. Emmz is a well known and respected member of the Talksox community. She has been here for several years and has made thousands of post that have contributed to the growth (and more importantly) the worth of this board. Here is a fact (apparently among many) that you may not be aware of. She is a Twins fan on a Sox board. Here is another fact. She knows far more about professional sports history than you do.

Where do you come off chastising her by labeling her a "lady". You are showing your age. Stop with the 1940's think (if you can). She is a woman. But more importantly, she is a person. A distinction that you seem incapable of making. Maybe you should just pop a few Midol and chase them with a shooter of Geritol. While you are at it, grind up some Viagra and mix it with your laxative. Oh, be careful OBs. We would all hate to hear of your demise do to the onset of Toxic Shock.

Maholm has pitched an average of 190 innings per season the last four years. Only one of the TEN options available for the #4/5 spots has 190 innings for their last two years combined.

And seriously, when was the last time a good starter became available for palatable prices around the deadline? Last year the Red Sox got a walking time bomb for the best defensive catcher in their organization. If they get someone mid-season, they're either going to mediocre, or cost significant prospects.

In other words' date=' have our pitchers stay healthy and we'll be successful. Isn't that pretty much the same thing for every other MLB team?[/quote']

Truer words have never been spoken.

No s***!

The intelligent thing about our apparent current strategy is that, assuming we are now under the cap (and NO ONE outside the organization seems to know that), we could go either way at the trading deadline. If we are in the race then sure, lets get another good SP. If we are out of it, we circle the wagons and wait till next year.

I am not at all unhappy with what has been done so far this offseason. I think it makes sound business sense.

I got no problem with her except that she has a bad habit of insulting people (=me) by laughing at serious posts in an attempt to discredit them rather than making her point and debating the issue. No one likes to be laughed at; most would consider it rude.

Twins fan? Here? Why?

No problem with fans of any team. Just surprised.

As to your other comment, its idiotic.

I said COMPETE for a playoff spot' date=' not be awarded one. We will COMPETE for second place, most likely, and COMPETE for a spot in October. Then we will be eliminated rapidly.[/quote']

You said "no one." I said there are enough posters on here who think this team is automatically playing for 3rd depending on the Jays.

I never said anything or inferred anything about what "you" said. I was saying that there are posters of that ilk.
