Peering into the Pitching Garbage Pail with your Pal, Pal

I got no problem with her except that she has a bad habit of insulting people (=me) by laughing at serious posts in an attempt to discredit them rather than making her point and debating the issue. No one likes to be laughed at; most would consider it rude.

Twins fan? Here? Why?

Love my Sox. Since '99 when I first saw Pedro

You said "no one." I said there are enough posters on here who think this team is automatically playing for 3rd depending on the Jays.

I never said anything or inferred anything about what "you" said. I was saying that there are posters of that ilk.

Reading is fundamental!

Who thinks that we are not able to compete for second place? Identify them, then we can ask them directly. I don't know anyone in that category, though I admit I could be wrong.

Nice sneak attack MVP since I don't have those games in front of me, but I will be sure to let Muggah know because he listed them last season and had nine by the middle of August. I will be certain to let him let y ou know which games they were so you could look them up yourself and weep since obviously you're a Franconian at heart.

Now let me hear what you have to say about our chances instead of sitting on the sidelines.

Using your logic, Francona lost 10 games. Replacing him with BV means 10 more wins, or no?

That's not a sneak attack. It's asking you a question about a point you've harped on endlessly.

I think this team is a 93ish win team.

Also, I haven't cried over the Sox since 86, which incidentally is still before your fanhood.

Muggah said this was an 86 win team. That was today.

Lets see what he has to say about competing for second place. I too think that a third place finish is most likely with a win total of about 89 games (we got the same team talent-wise as last year IMO), but I also think we can possible get to second place; ie, we can compete for second place.

Muggah? Comment?

Maholm has pitched an average of 190 innings per season the last four years. Only one of the TEN options available for the #4/5 spots has 190 innings for their last two years combined.

And seriously, when was the last time a good starter became available for palatable prices around the deadline? Last year the Red Sox got a walking time bomb for the best defensive catcher in their organization. If they get someone mid-season, they're either going to mediocre, or cost significant prospects.

Have you checked out Maholm's peripherals? Previous years? He had a 105 ERA+ in his career year. Do you think that, combined with his low strikeout total and platoon issues (righties have an OPS against him above .800) would fly in Fenway? He also pitched 162 innings last year. He is not a good option, and neither was Saunders. Be realistic.

As for mid-season options, there were plenty to choose from last year, including Harden and Fister. The Sox simply chose the wrong one. I fail to see the logic here.

You're copping out massively. Muggah has been beating the "maybe third place, probably fourth place" drum for months.

So the answer to that is a personal attack towards someone who wasn't talking to you to begin with? Fred' date=' you know better.[/quote']

It wasn't a personal attack User. Maybe a light admonishment for attacking my friend without just cause..in my opinion. I happen to be very loyal to my friends. Look, I'm not holier than Thou and if someone thinks I'm full of crap on something then call me out, but please tell me why you think I'm off my trolley with an argument of your own. Notice I argue with you but never call you names or get personal---and we go around a lot. Hell, MVP and EX1 have gotten on my case but so what? They answer in kind why they think I'm wrong and I respect that. And the fact is I could be wrong and if it turns out that way I will let them know it and give them the credit they deserve. I just don't like snide and nasty remarks without any substance to back it up.

Besides, I usually have Pumpsie and Muggah's back and they have mine. Elk doesn't need it because he's always a gentleman.

Because it was a sexist comment Fred. Notice the rest of the responses.

I don't consider calling someone "a lady" to be sexist. Its like calling a male a gentleman.

Lets see what he has to say. As I wrote, I could be wrong. Knowing Muggah I think he will say that there is a shot we can finish in second place but that third is more likely. Same opinion I hold.

Yes because that was exactly the part of the post that offended people. Thank you for your contributions, fine elder.

If you're going to place a bet on the upcoming season and you're picking the Sox to win more than 86-87 games' date=' IMO you're throwing your money away.[b'] This will be another 3rd place finish---that is if they can hold off the Jays. I'm still undecided as to whether or not I believe they can.[/b]

Even the King of Talksox recognizes me as a contributive, well-informed poster. I just have low tolerance for ignorance, and cant be bothered to split hairs with people who see the glass as half empty at all times, and view themselves as realists. I know your ass still stings from when I told you your supposed insider knowledge was a crock of s***, but you're actually the one who's being non-contributive this time. At least what I said was applicable to the discussion. You, on the other hand, are just blathering.

Its never too late to learn some respect for women and whippersnappers, pops.

Having been happily married for 41 years, having raised a daughter and having a beautiful little granddaughter, you can be assured that I have ultimate respect for women and, truth be told, I prefer their company to men. I don't know where you came up with that insider knowledge because I don't have any; are you sure you don't have me mixed up for someone else? At any rate if you did call me out my rear end doesn't sting from it. I also like defending my friends. At any rate, you had your say and I salute your feistiness. Next time we exchange posts we have to make sure that it is in a more friendlier tone.

With all due respect madam, all you can really say is a lot of nothing of substance. Between what passes for humor or sarcasm I have yet to read one of your posts where you actually contribute an opinion to what the Red Sox can do to better themselves or offer give an opinion with relation to the team. Sometimes you ladies on these Red Sox boards can really be pills in this regard. Looking forward to seeing you tell us how you see the Red Sox shaping up this season and why. That would be very refreshing.

None of this is sexist. Whatever else it is, sexist it is not.

And Fred is right about some posters here not having much original to say, preferring instead to complain about what others have written. Personally, I have no problem with that tact. Write what you want as long as you are discussing the issues.

Obviously not, seeing as you always "have each other's back". But thank you for your contributions, fine elder.

I think Muggah is perfectly capable of responding to the question of whether we have a chance at competing for second place all by himself, without your help.

If its all the same to you, I'll wait to hear from him.

Enlighten me, oh sagatious one...what here is sexist?

Posted
Don't care. It's on the record. The chance for copping out is no longer there. You have read those posts before. Cut the BS.

No copout. If you ask me where I think the team will finish, I would also say third place. If you ask if they have any chance to compete for second place, I would answer in the affirmative. I would not have them favored to finish second, but its possible.

Hard to believe you are having trouble with this concept.

In other words' date=' have our pitchers stay healthy and we'll be successful. Isn't that pretty much the same thing for every other MLB team?[/quote']

Yes, that's correct RSFFL, but our problem is depth in the rotation so it is more important for our key pitchers to stay healthy than it is for the Yankees and Rays who have more quality depth there. I don't know why I have to keep repeating it but if we stay healthy and our pitching comes around we will be in the race. My friends also think the same but they don't believe they will stay healthy and be effective all season. You and I do, but let's be honest, history seems to be on their side. We get on and off years from Beckett, Lester usually gets off to a miserable start, and Buchholz seems to be injury prone. Now keep those three fully healthy and effective all year and, yes, we can make a real run at the division title. And that's about as optimistic as you can expect under the circumstances.

Here is exactly where the copout is. He has stated several times this team has absolutely no chance to make the playoffs, and pretty much called anyone who could believe that they could an idiot, except his good buddies. I have absolutely no trouble, you're the one openly twisting the truth. Have fun with that.

No, you're not being sexist, and if you were, I would not care. But you obviously don't have respect for me, or you'd have recognized that I was contributive both in that moment and over the past year or two. Whether it's because I'm not over half of a century old, I dont got hangers between the legs or any other reason is a non-issue.

Ofcourse I checked his peripherals. He's not a great option, and if I said that anywhere, I misspoke. The problem is, he's still a helluva a lot better than these other guys

Harden was garbage after the deadline, Fister would have cost a ton, and Kuroda didn't want to come to Boston. I remember looking at all of the possibilities last year, and the pickings were very slim. Teams almost never find value at the deadline.

Muggah must be very comforted by the fact that you speak so eloquently on his behalf.
