I'm a little confused about the Sox this deadline. At the beginning of the season, I remember hearing John Henry say that they set aside some money for any trade deadline moves that they would need to make. Now, I keep hearing that they do not have any room to take on extra salary, which makes Beltran a long shot. It gets old getting the conflicting reports.

I've heard the Sox linked to Cuddyer as well. He's having a pretty solid season. 13 HR, 137 OPS+. Higher average, lower OPS than Beltran, but comes at a fraction of the cost. Realistically, I can see Cuddyer more than I can see Beltran.

Cuddy vs LHP (100 PA): .369/.470/.726

Beltran vs LHP (103 PA): .232/.291/.547

Cuddyer could be a big addition to the club, and has a pretty realistic shot of being traded here.

I've heard Cuddyer is a defensive nightmare though and having to handle RF in Fenway would likely compound that problem.

And while Cuddyer is unquestionably hitting better than Beltran against lefties this year, Carlos has a career .291 average off of left-handed pitching. His .232 this season is only in a sample of around 100 at-bats. Cuddyer's had about the same amount of at-bats against left-handers and while hitting around .360 off of them is impressive, his career average is .293. I'd rather take Beltran who's proven that he can hit lefties and isn't going to be a butcher in the outfield. Plus, he's an absolute beast in the postseason. I hope that's one move that gets made, I wouldn't mind Matt Garza either.

How many people would be willing to give up something like Doubront and Tejeda for Beltran assuming we cover most or all of the remaining $6-8 million on his contract?

Not going to happen. You don't give up major league talent, and a decent prospect for a player that is not only extremely expensive, injury prone, leaving again in a few months, but also won't net you picks in the draft.

Seeing as how Carlos could be acquire for nothing in a trade, what sort of package would we have to come up with to land Garza (if that is fact who the FO is targeting)? Would Doubront be a good starting point?

That return in a trade would make more sense if we going after a starting pitcher that's underperformed a bit this year, Garza being a good example. Not for a half season rental in right field making a ton of cash that's almost certain to hit the wall age wise in the near future.

I'd say that wouldn't be a bad place to start, although I think the Cubs would want a bit more in return. Doubront, a mid-level prospect, and cash might be enough to get it done. Being a lefty with fairly good stuff would help Doubront out quite a bit if he played in the National league, regardless of whether he pitched out of the pen or as a starter.

Garza always struck me as being pretty solid in crunch time... once he left the pressure filled AL East for a team with no ability to make the post-season, he struggled. Playing for the Sox in a major pennant run would rekindle things IMO.

For Garza? A 27 year old 200 innings guy? Kid's young and not overpaid, unless the Cubs are determined to let him walk they should ask for more than Doubront and a "mid level prospect."

I'm sure the Cubs will get many years out of Garza, whose velocity is apparently fine.

Look, the Cubs traded for him, he's in his mid 20's, he has good stuff, and he eats innings. Also as one of the biggest markets in the NL, you can pay your peeps. If you're the Cubs, how anxious are you to give him up for any price only one year after you make a deal for him???

The Cubs clearly have every intention of trying to extend Garza. They aren't trading him.

It must be such culture shock to go from a place like Tampa where fans don't show up when you're winning to get to a place where fans fill the stadium when you're losing. No wonder he's having a hard time adjusting to the environment

I hear ya... perhaps I'm underestimating his abilities just a tad

Still, I think he's been a fairly big disappointment for them this year. When they got him, it was with the expectation that he'd lock down the front of their rotation for years to come. Instead he's pitched more like a 3rd or 4th... not bad, but not great either.

Have to remember that he's been traded twice now... if he was as good and cost controlled as you make him out to be, the Twins and the Rays after them would have never let him go.

He's not that far off his normal numbers. A decent second half gets him back to his usual range. I don't think he's underperformed that much for the Cubs. He's on an 200 inning pace with an ERA in the low 4's. That's really not terrible.

So I take it you have no interest in Garza?

The Cubs are only "cursed" with weak ownership and poor franchise management.

Never said he was terrible... just that he hasn't lived up to the front of the rotation billing as of yet in Chicago. I'd love to put together a deal for him... preferably one that doesn't involve us giving up our best prospects though.

If you get the all-star coverage on MLB.com, did you see Cuddyer huddling with Youkilis, Ellsbury and Ad Gon a couple of times pre-game? What was that all about?

A lot depends on what is offered for Beltran by other teams, but the Mets are looking to unload salary, which means they don't have a lot of leverage. They would probably prefer to dump him in the AL. But he has a no-trade, so the Mets might be forced to deal with the Red Sox, whom he prefers right now.

And the Mets fire sale begins... next up... Beltran to the Sox for a PTBNL and cash considerations

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/07/brewers-acquire-francisco-rodriguez.html

The Brewers surprised some people by trading for Shaun Marcum and Zack Greinke last offseason and it turns out GM Doug Melvin wasn't done dealing for impact pitchers. The Brewers and Mets announced that Milwaukee has acquired Francisco Rodriguez and cash for two players to be named later.

“Francisco has been one of the best relievers in the game for many years,” Melvin said in a statement. “He is a high-quality arm who will be a tremendous asset to our bullpen as we prepare for the final months of the regular season and playoffs.”

The 29-year-old has a 3.16 ERA with 9.7 K/9, 3.4 BB/9 and a 52% ground ball rate in 42 2/3 innings of relief this year. Those aren't the only numbers that matter for Rodriguez and the Brewers, however. He has finished 34 games and a clause in his contract dictates that his $17.5MM option for 2012 becomes guaranteed if he finishes 55 games this season. Otherwise, the Brewers will face a $3.5MM option and Rodriguez will hit the open market.

Rodriguez, who signed a three-year $37MM free agent contract after saving 62 games in 2008, recently hired Scott Boras. The agent suggested earlier in the week that his new client would be unlikely to accept a trade to one of the ten teams on his no-trade list if it meant becoming a setup man. Melvin told Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that manager Ron Roenicke will decide how to use Rodriguez and current closer John Axford depending on the situation.

It's not the first time that Melvin has made the first major trade of the summer. Back in 2008, he acquired C.C. Sabathia from the Guardians in a deal that helped send the Brewers to the postseason for the first time since 1982. The 49-43 Brewers are now tied with the Cardinals atop the National League Central standings, one game ahead of the Pirates and four games ahead of the Reds.

Jon Heyman of SI.com first reported the move (Twitter links). For our instant take on the fantasy baseball ramifications of this deal for the Brewers and Mets, check out @closernews on Twitter.

The Giants have interest in Carlos Beltran, according to Knobler. Beltran said today that he won't be shocked if the Giants trade for him.

the anticipation is killing me.

Will we get someone new for RF or a new SP? or Reyes (not!)? I really think a SP would be best. #1 offense doesn't need a new RF that bad, right? Seems like we need a new pitcher.

The Mets got fleeced. They had to send cash AND they only got players to be named later in return. If we could get a similary friendly deal for Beltran, I'd be all for it. But it would be silly not to think that Beltran's going to command more than 2 PTBNL.
