Drew is a good player who runs hot and cold hitting-wise. But I think we'll see Beltran out there the 2nd half unless somebody else gets him. The Mets might keep Reyes, but they won't keep Beltran.

And the Red Sox badly need another RHd power bat in the lineup.

Actually' date=' Lackey came to spring training 10 lighter than last year.[/quote']

The Globe guy said he looked out of shape running out that double he got a couple of starts ago. Of course, these AL pitchers are not used to running the bases.

If we don't quibble over the salary, we'll get him. If another team gets him, it will be because they were willing to take more salary than us. Prospects will not be the deciding factor.

I'm almost positive we'll get Beltran. He's an all star this year, and our offense would have 4 switch hitters.

That's all it's gonna take.

Yup. Beltran is almost a no-brainer for Boston.

Mets Listening On Carlos Beltran

From MLBTrade Rumors.com

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 7 at 9:44am CST]

The Mets are beginning to accept calls on Carlos Beltran, according to Kevin Kernan of the New York Post and “people are calling” about the outfielder.

Beltran, who has said he’ll waive his no-trade clause in the right deal to a contender, met with agent Scott Boras to discuss trade possibilities. Few teams, if any, could afford Beltran’s $18.5MM salary, since he’ll still be owed $6MM or so at the end of July. He currently projects as a Type A free agent, but the Mets cannot offer him arbitration after the season.

The Yankees aren’t interested in Beltran, though the Red Sox are a possible fit given the low level of offensive production Boston has received from its right fielders this year. Mets GM Sandy Alderson says “it’s still a little bit early” to make deals, since the Mets are “relevant” in the race for playoff berths.

Always beware of statements like this. They have no credibility whatsoever.

Even money they've called the Red Sox about Jason Bay.

What about a Lackey + cash for a Jason Bay trade?

Bay has done poorly against righties... but look at Bay's stats against LHP this year--

.295 .405 .525 .930

I'm sure a change of scenary would do very good things for both of these players.

Cashman said the Yankees would not be active in the trade market before the deadline last year just before he acquired Berkman, Wood, and Kearnes.

I doubt this would happen. Besides, Bay has played only one game in right since he came to the majors. That should tell us something.

The Yankees dont NEED to upgrade their offense, but if Posada swoons into the end of this month, then they might have to get a bat. 3 bad months and 1 good one does not a good season make. The Yankees are gonna need help in the back of the pen. Soriano might be back, he might not. We dont have a trustworthy lefty reliever and if we could get a guy like Bell or ...gulp.. KRod, we could recreate what we thought we had at the beginning of the yr. I am not sure how long the mirage of Wade and Ayala can last before it cracks. And with Mariano being laid up for a bit, I think having a 1a at the end of the pen could be great

Bay is in a good groove right now.

Dude. I would pull the trigger on that deal so fast. I know Crawford doesn't have the arm for RF, but his speed would be so much more valuable out there than in the friendly confines of Fenway LF.

Jason Bay ? seriously ?

680 OPS

Bay hasent been the same when he left the Red Sox and has been brutal ever since

You have to realize, we'd be trading John Lackey for him. This is a guy with elite RHH OF potential, that fills this team's needs, and who plays better at Fenway, and is already going to be a fit in this clubhouse.

If I had to choose between John Lackey, who has a 7.50 ERA at the ASB, or Jason Bay, who has proven he can kill it at Fenway, I take Bay every single day.

Not to mention, in his last 15 games, Bay is hitting .322/.394/.559/.953 and appears to be turning it around. I would trade Lackey for Bay, and eat a portion of Lackey's contract instantly if the opportunity came up.

Problem is why would the Mets take Lackey. I would love seeing Bay back in Boston though, I've missed him ever since he left.

Bay has been a bust so far. Lackey has been a bust so far. Bay would perform better at Fenway, Lackey would perform better at Citi. Throw in some money/ a prospect or two, and why not?

Hard to see the Mets taking on salary. They will give up salary to retain Reyes. That means dumping Beltran and Bay. At this point, the Red Sox would prefer Beltran for his defense.

This is from Jon Heyman's article on SportsIllustrated.cnn.com

While he (Ethier) hasn't spoken publicly about his concerns since the season started, people close to the situation say they are aware that Ethier has imagined his next stop could be the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees also are believed to like Ethier very much, but people close to Ethier say they believe he has Boston in his mind.

"He's got his best buddy Dustin Pedroia telling him how great Boston is,'' one of those people said. "In Andre's mind, [the Dodgers situation] is embarrassing. And Boston has a different [vibe] right now.''

Ethier would be nice' date=' but he's another left handed hitter who doesn't hit all too well against lefty pitchers.[/quote']

If we were to grab Ethier, do you think we can wrestle JJ Hardy away from Baltimore. Would they trade in division? We could dump Scutaro for some pen help or another role player and Hardy would give us some right handed pop, an average in the .280's with decent power.

The Sox don't really struggle against lefty pitchers. They OPS .790 versus lefties and .809 versus right handers. Since they face far more right handers, that isn't that significant.

If the Sox got Ethier, we would have a historic offense. Where the heck do you hit that guy?? What a problem to have.

This is a guy that I would give up some solid prospects for, including Kalish.

Very interesting. Would it be possible to get him for a 3/36 or 4/40 deal? What is his contract value looking like?

I think he is in the last year of a two year deal.

From Dylan Hernandez:

His $9.25-million base salary in 2011 will increase by $25,000 if he makes 600 plate appearances this year, an additional $50,000 if he makes 650 plate appearances and yet another $50,000 if he makes 675.

In addition, Ethier can earn $125,000 in incentives based on plate appearances each season: $25,000 for 600, $50,000 for 650 and $50,000 for 675.
