Btw are there any Yankee fans on here? ;)

Time to start mining Jacko's bold claims from the past...

I don't LOVE that the Phillies signed him, but in terms of the Sox getting to the WS I think it is the best of the three between NY, TX, and PHI. Don't love it, but I can take it compared to what I was assuming would happen.

Heart goes out to Texas.

I wonder what attracted him to Philly so much, aside from the rabid fan base, pitching with Doc and Roy and Cole and the 20m he will make every year.

Posted

Philadelphia is the most complete team right now, that's what attracted him there.

Sort of funny though-- considering the Sox offered 7/low, what if he had been most attracted to winning, and took that offer to pitch here?

Lee is the first major free agent in recent memory to be targeted by the Yankees and to ultimately reject them. The Yankee dollar generally does not take no for an answer.

Let's hope this is a trend!!

where do you live now ?

Kalamazoo, Michigan. As close to the old "Land where milk comes in bags" as i can possibly be.

The only thing that could possibly make me happier would be if the Sox could acquire A-gon or something.

Oh, wait.

This worked out perfectly for the Sox. The Yankees don't get their #1 target. Texas loses out which opens the door for them to spend that money on Beltre (which would net the Sox a 1st round pick), and Lee goes to a National League team. Sure the Phillies will have the best rotation in the majors, which would make them very difficult to beat if the two teams were lucky enough to make the World Series, but its probably the best result the Sox could have asked for.

Do you think we should all open up Youporn and celebrate?

Lets Just leave PMs for our favorite people. lmao.

Does anyone think that Martin is/was waiting for this decision to decide.

I still think their lineup is largely suspect outside of Howard and Utley, but I guess the Phillies are the favorites to reach the WS out of the NL.

I'm really not sure how Theo can improve on this offseason, once he signs a couple relievers.

I agree with you regarding their lineup, but I'm not sure its going to matter. Citizens Bank Park is probably the most hitter-friendly park in the majors, which should help their offense and I think their rotation is good enough to make up for the deficiencies they have on offense.

I disagree on the offense.

Their core 6: Ruiz, Howard, Rollins, Polanco, Utley, Victorino is really really good.

They'll miss the thump that Werth brought to the table, but their offense is still top notch by NL standards. And who knows, maybe they get a good OF.

Rollins has been overrated for years, Ruiz can walk but not do much else, and Victorino produces numbers that one might expect from Kalish's first year (not to say that they're bad, but that they're not anything special).

Plus, their lineup is really lefty-heavy. LOOGYs turn into LOIGYs.

They also have Domonic Brown to fill the void left by Werth leaving. He won't be as good as Werth currently is, but in a few years he could be a beast. They are now easily the best team in the NL. I'm thrilled that the Yanks didn't get Lee, but the Phillies will be tough to beat if the Sox face them in the WS. If Beckett and Lackey don't step up, it won't be a contest.

We will see... I expect Dipre to be right. They will still have a potent lineup. With that pitching they really won't need much.

With a lot of FA signings there are questions about how they will perform (even guys like CC or A-Rod). With Doc and Lee there is little question about how they will perform. These are easily two of the best innings eaters in baseball. They are masters at their craft and absolutely dominate the diamond like few others when they have the ball. Two Hall of Fame caliber pitchers (Lee won't get in, Doc probably will) is a special thing.

The combination of excellent starting pitching

You need to think about it from a position-by-position perspective. Their infield is great offensively.

Howard, Utley, Ruiz and Rollins are all above average at their position, while Polanco is right around average for a 3B.

Victorino had a down year fueled by injuries, but he's a good bet to hit .280, get on base at a .350 clip, hit more than 50 XBH and steal 30 bases on a healthy year. That's great production out of CF.

Lee to the Phillies?

Pants tent.

Ruiz beats "average" by not very much, which factors in his anomalous 2010 performance. Rollins' past 2 seasons have also barely been above average, and given his age and recent decline I don't think that it will be much better. I didn't realize Victorino had injury problems last year.

I'm not saying that it's a bad lineup, it's just not one of the top lineups in the NL IMO. With the loss of Werth, and their subsequent vulnerability to LH pitching, I don't think that it's a top 3 lineup next season (in the NL). Of course, I still think they'll do fine given their monster pitching staff, I just don't think their lineup is really elite anymore.

GIve me three NL lineups better than the Phillies top to bottom as presently constructed.
